Today's footie 6/10/21
The small matter of the Manchester derby to start with, will it be Ole's swansong at Utd?

Re: Today's footie 6/10/21
No I think the ghost of United’s past will still be backing Ole to turn it around. Fergie was minutes away from the sack and swapping and changing has failed to stabilise United since he left… I don’t think the appetite for change is strong enough, yet.
Re: Today's footie 6/10/21
It’s a shame they both can’t lose but I do enjoy watching United’s defence fall to pieces every time the opposition attack.
They really are an awfully coached side.

Terrible start for them.
A big defeat would be difficult to survive after the Liverpool game.

Re: Today's footie 6/10/21
Different era in those days though, and Utd weren't a big spending club in the early years of Fergie's reign, plus the expectation probably weren't as high, whereas Ole has spent a fortune compared to the likes of Leicester & Liverpool, and if anything they are going backwards.elwaclaret wrote: ↑Sat Nov 06, 2021 12:43 pmNo I think the ghost of United’s past will still be backing Ole to turn it around. And what Utd do in training I have no idea, but it's evidently not defensive work they are a shambles at the back again.

Re: Today's footie 6/10/21
It depends how you define big spending… at the time United had multiple million pound signings when even few division one clubs could afford one. He brought through youth, but don’t forget Big Ron had signed Robson and Moses, they had Gary Birtles, Alan Brazil, Arnold Muhran, Jasper Olson….tiger76 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 06, 2021 12:54 pmDifferent era in those days though, and Utd weren't a big spending club in the early years of Fergie's reign, plus the expectation probably weren't as high, whereas Ole has spent a fortune compared to the likes of Leicester & Liverpool, and if anything they are going backwards.

United outspent the rest of the division by some margin; other teams had ‘blasts’ Swales backed City (Alison and Bond) and Southampton had a spree late 70’s early 80’s but no one could match United funds.

Re: Today's footie 6/10/21
That second goal at least reflects the first half. One Ronaldo effort apart it’s been virtual one way traffic.

Re: Today's footie 6/10/21
That 2nd goal fully reflects City dominance, and if Utd don't buck their ideas up 2nd half this could be another 0-5.
Re: Today's footie 6/10/21
Amazing how Solskjaer continues to be in charge.

United v City is men against Boys
Its actually quite difficult watching how poor United are
I don't think even Ronaldo can save them in this one

I’d like to see City go for the kill.
It might be more advantageous in the long run not to go too hard though.

Re: Today's footie 6/10/21
Remind me! Maguire and Shaw are first choice England regulars aren't they?
Re: Today's footie 6/10/21
I hope City don't get the deck chairs out in the second half as Liverpool did.
Re: Today's footie 6/10/21
They've been very good for England and Shaw was excellent for United last season. Sort of exemplifies Solskjaer's lack of ability.aclaretinstevenage wrote: ↑Sat Nov 06, 2021 1:22 pmRemind me! Maguire and Shaw are first choice England regulars aren't they?

Re: Today's footie 6/10/21
They have generally been fine for England, but it's worth mentioning that they are well served by Phillips and Rice screening the midfield and breaking up many attacks before the opposition get close to England's backline, yes some people might think Southgate's tactics are negative, but he's proving far more effective than Ole's scatter-brained approach to management.
Re: Today's footie 6/10/21
I think the major factor is that United are defensively dreadful this season in terms of shape, cohesion and confidence .tiger76 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 06, 2021 1:31 pmThey have generally been fine for England, but it's worth mentioning that they are well served by Phillips and Rice screening the midfield and breaking up many attacks before the opposition get close to England's backline, yes some people might think Southgate's tactics are negative, but he's proving far more effective than Ole's scatter-brained approach to management.

Re: Today's footie 6/10/21
Possibly, but a struggling manager is surely entitled to some assistance from his Senior men is he not? It's not only this match, thinking back to the Liverpool game they don't seem to have improved much for all Maguire's apologising and taking a look at themselves. Roy Keane is not best pleased with things just now.
We'll see what the second half brings
Re: Today's footie 6/10/21
Of course he needs and should expect assistance from his players. But if he can't get more out of them he will be sacked.aclaretinstevenage wrote: ↑Sat Nov 06, 2021 1:47 pmPossibly, but a struggling manager is surely entitled to some assistance from his Senior men is he not? Re: Today's footie 6/10/21
Man U. were doing fine with Mason Greenwood up front, until they've obviously shoe horned CR7 into the side, to the detriment of the others by the looks of it.Bordeauxclaret wrote: ↑Sat Nov 06, 2021 2:03 pmHe must be thinking he’s joined the wrong Manchester club.
Although whether he had the opportunity in the end is debatable.
Re: Today's footie 6/10/21
Greenwood has still looked fine. Ronaldo has been their bright light. I can think of many other reasons why the others are underperforming before pinning it on Ronaldo.

Re: Today's footie 6/10/21
Indeed if it wasn't for Ronaldo Utd would probably already be out of the CL, he's virtually kept them ticking over in that competition on his own with his goals.
Re: Today's footie 6/10/21
Ronaldo has saved them with some incredible finishing but his overall contributions have been poor including non existent pressing. United were far better as a team with Cavani last season, for example.

Benson starts for the Tykes in their home derby with Hull.
Brady on Bournemouth's bench again, as is Juke for Brum in their delayed KO against Reading, that game now starts at 3.30.

Duffer's Cheltenham 1-0 to the good at Gillingham now HT in the early KO, maybe he fancies another cup run and a return to TM in the new year.
