Tony Scholes to step down

Post by ClaretTony » Tue Nov 09, 2021 5:41 pm

I'm afraid so, the time comes for everything.

The news has been confirmed that Tony Scholes is stepping down as CEO at Stoke after 17 years. He's joining the Premier League.

Did you ever get the Phil Collins/Ashley Hoskins or Steve Davis/Steve Davis type photo done CT it was certainly as often commented upon as those famous snap shots?

I've seen a pic of Phil Collins with Ash when Collins sponsored him at Accrington

If anything, this just increases the chances / opportunities for confusion now the namesake is back in the same division as ourselves.

He was CEO at PNE for some time before that but there has been some confusion over the years. One former chief exec at Burnley used to send me emails that were meant for him (I can't say who but it was Andrew Watson) and Barry Kilby left him a number of voice mail messages meant for me.

I finally spoke to him last year after The Athletic got confused and sent me his details for signing in. He told me he was often told he should be writing about Burnley.

That’s the one. Stave Davis (snooker) and centre half Mk1 did one at Norbreck Castle… it was once suggested you got one with your imposter too… I was asking if it ever got done?

No - never actually met him but I used to refer to him as The Imposter when he was at Preston.

The thing is this. Is the person writing this post actually the real Tony Scholes or is it in fact the other real Tony Scholes. To be honest we’ll never really know. :(

If you were a Director at Lancaster City, did you have to attend their games and miss Burnley matches?

Working in Stoke and living close by, I can confirm he was not at all popular at Stoke to say the least. Some very happy people in my workplace today.

Played a lot of Monday night matches but my seat at the Giant Axe would be empty if Burnley were playing.

Brilliant experience but a long time ago.
