Pushing people towards their own "Platinum" card, I suspect.
And why platinum, plastic is so much cheaper

Re: Amazon
This’ll be because Visa raised their card charges for U.K. issued cards when the EU charge cap no longer applied after Brexit.

You should know by now that telling people what is happening as a consequence of their decisions if it mentions the "B" word is verboten!

We don't live in a town, and run a business from our house, so anything that goes wrong we need asap

For shopping reasons, it means I don't need to stand around in queues or have to listen to idiots lashing out at shop workers because the idiots don't understand basic refund rules etc.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Wed Nov 17, 2021 10:45 amTo keep the thread going...

I can shop at a time to suit me as well and as I work odd hours and have an odd sleeping pattern, that's great.
More variety, especially for the odd stuff and also things that I simply cannot buy in physical shops anymore.
Films - I don't buy dvds anymore, I watch most of my stuff online, but for those films that aren't available watch as part of Prime/Netflix etc and I enjoy I can buy them on Amazon usually and they're a good price.
I only really need physical shops for clothes (sizes are always different across brands) and food, but even Amazon are offering groceries now.

It delivers stuff quickly, that’s it’s selling point now. It’s not the cheapest, nor does it have the best range, but you can order something today that will almost certainly arrive tomorrow.

Many of the outlets I use have online stores with next day delivery.
It's often what one could describe as specialist stuff so price isn't an issue.

*Specialist stuff*
The mind boggles!
Re: Amazon
Back in the day it was pretty much always ‘please allow 28 days for delivery’. Unthinkable now!
Re: Amazon
I order stuff off Amazon for all the reasons mentioned above ...
I usually find have it delivered next day (Amazon prime account helps and gets us TV stuff, films etc as well) ...
Also shop on E-bay (and sell stuff too) as well as going to the usuals in town ... be that Burnley, Skipton, Keighley wherever ...
If I can save money using Amazon I will shop on there ...

When you look for something and it says fulfilled by Amazon, it normally has a delivery date the day after. It arrives the day after.

Re: Amazon
For some reason I always feel uneasy about using my debit card online, much prefer using a credit card for added security and protection, or maybe I am wrong about that.
Amazon will be banning uk issued visa credit cards only but are ok with other credit cards like Mastercard, so maybe I should get one of them as I buy quite a bit from Amazon.

Re: Amazon
Amazon are only interested in profit and the margins they can eke out of the providers of goods they sell. They're one of the major tax avoiders in this country along with several others. Buying stuff from Amazon with invoices addresses from Luxembourg and Lichtenstein doesn't help our own economy, our own independent retail industry, high streets and shops.

I don’t use Amazon massively but do use it. There are a number of good reasons for using them too for me.

You do still get guarantees with Debit Cards but they are weaker.

I use Amazon because they provide a brilliant service, better then most shops if ordering something. Many online services are excellent for choices and I've rarely had problems.

i also have concerns over the environmental issues, flying goods all over the place and the long distance deliveries by road.
But unless we make conscious efforts to support local businesses then this is what we get

Countries have finally woken up to how much they're losing from taxes.
That's why the EU took Ireland to court, they claimed Apple wasn't getting taxed enough and wanted Ireland to charge more.
Shopping locally is all well and good if they have what I want and at a reasonable price.
Invariably it's no to both.
The high street is outdated and that started happening with the rise of edge of town shopping areas years ago, then online shopping became more convenient.
Some shops even say they can't match the online price from their own website, so they're pushing you to buy online.

Will be interesting to see if VISA back down, revert to lower prices for Amazon. Doubt Amazon will back down, and makes no difference to them I suspect.

I thought the reason for the excess packaging was it makes it easier to transport and load up a van if the boxes are all certain sizes.

Based on the last accounts Amazon issued, the proportion of their worldwide profits which were subject to UK tax was very similar to the proportion of their worldwide sales that were subject to UK taxes. I don't think there's much complaint on corporation tax for that year.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 17, 2021 3:02 pmI believe there is a major push now to stop the companies like Amazon from hiding all their profits through the usual legal methods.

Me too. I've never fancied using a debt card online. At least with a credit card, if there is a fraud it isn't my money that's been stolen and the credit card company has to try to make me pay up. With a debit card fraud, it's my money that's gone and I have to try and get it back from someone else.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Nov 17, 2021 1:59 pmI have a debit card but prefer to use a credit card for purchases
Re: Amazon
We used to use Amazon a lot but realised just how much of it was coming from China. We've made a conscious effort to try to shop local, by that I mean products made/sold at least in the UK.
We do still use it but only if it's necessary and the wife gets her books from there but for example. I was looking for a chess/draughts set and she said 'try Amazon' but I went online and found a bloke who made them in his own workshop down south.
He was genuinely thrilled we chose him and had a hand written note thanking us. The quality and craftsmanship is extraordinary and worth paying a bit more knowing we helped someone in our own country during the pandemic.

Re: Amazon
It’s just a ploy to negotiate Visa’s transaction rates down.
Visa have already put out a statement that they are continuing negotiations with Amazon and will have a resolution prior to January, which will see users still be able to use their cards on the site.
Amazon will risk losing custom, as folks don’t want the hassle of moving to Mastercard, Amex, etc.
Visa will risk losing fortunes on their transaction charges to Amazon, as everyone purchases through alternatives.
It’s a matter of who blinks first.
