Southgate signs New England contract
England manager Gareth Southgate has signed a new contract to keep him in the role until December 2024.
Is this a good decision?

Suppose that gives me another 3 years of having no interest in international football.

Why do you feel like that?
England have won 44 of their 68 matches under Southgate, with 14 defeats and 10 draws.

Hope he can progress this side by introducing the generational talents of Bellingham and TAA into the first team.
I’d like to see this as a starting 11:
———-—Pickford——————-
—James Stones Maguire—-
TAA —————————Chilwell
——Bellingham Rice—————
—Foden —————Sterling——
—————-Kane————————-
That teams wins the World Cup.

He's shown clear signs of moving England forwards and he will be a better manager going into Qatar than he was at the Euros, because he's got that big game experience now.
Re: Southgate signs New England contract
Seriously the answer is ZERO!!
Beat Holland in a friendly in 2018 who were a poor Holland, we beat a very poor Germany in the euros.
We haven't beaten any other top side under Southgate and have lost games we shouldn't lose when they mattered.
He's the English Ole, likeable but not good enough to win at the very top regardless of the talent available.

On a serious note, England have been blassed with the best range of talent for many years. I'm not too sure that we will see the full potential with SG in charge

You can’t argue against his record with England but I do sometimes wonder at his team selection, formation and style of play. He is lucky though in that he is benefiting from a conveyor belt of talent to choose from.

I'm not his biggest fan but he represents the Country well and has done pretty well on the pitch. I'm not seeing a better option than him at the moment BUT the FA will look incredibly foolish should we flop in Qatar

I don't agree with a lot of Southgate picks but Bellingham looks a superstar in the making to me. So much upper body strength for a youngster.
If he carries on developing like he has, he could be the difference in England winning something.
Him and Rice could form a great midfield if he continues with the two sitters.

Absolutely, he is class and looks to have it all. Keane’s recent quote was ‘can see why he wears number 22 for Dortmund as he’s a 4, 8 and 10 all at once’. A ‘right’ side of James (RCB), TAA (wing back), Bellingham (RCM) and Foden (RAM) would be incredible.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Mon Nov 22, 2021 2:24 pmI don't agree with a lot of Southgate picks but Bellingham looks a superstar in the making to me. How anyone can say Bellingham isn’t international class can’t possibly have watched him play. He’s bossing the midfield of a team gunning for the Bundesliga title having just turned 18. To put into context, that’s 7 years younger than Phillips and nearly 5 years younger than Rice

I guess there is a lot more to come from these England boys and the FA see Southgate as the man to do the job.
Let’s not forget, a lot of these lads aren’t, or have only just become regular first choices for their clubs let alone country..
The future is very bright for England..

Re: Southgate signs New England contract
I don't watch much International football, but with the constant chopping and changing of the teams, blooding in youngsters, looking a different players etc, it doesn't feel like there is much consistency.
However, you cant grumble at what Southgate has achieved, semi final of the World Cup, Final of the European Championships and now qualification for Qatar. I'd find it hard to understand why he wouldn't be offered a new contract.

Btw Bellingham just got runner up in World Golden Boy (Pedri at Barca first). But WoodleyClaret says he isn’t good enough for England.

Makes sense.
Southgate won't get a better job, England won't attract a better manager.
We'll continue to smash no-marks on the international stage and, as long as the draws continue to be kind to him to see him progress far enough, Southgate will keep folk content.

Re: Southgate signs New England contract
I don’t understand, or rather I think I might. You can only judge a manager by his record. Southgate s record is second only to Ramsey. People moaning obviously choose to ignore his record or call it lucky in some way. Sure he has a good crop of players, so what? Ferguson got lucky at United with a crop of players but he is supposedly the best club manager ever. Apparently we haven’t played anyone ‘good’, so when we beat Germany they were a ‘poor’ Germany. Southgate is the best thing that happened to England in decades, his record stands out a mile.
The reason many on here don’t like him, illogically, is quite simple: for whatever reason he has he doesn’t pick Burnley players who they think he should pick. There’s nothing more, just petty sulking in my opinion.

Have you ever heard the phrase ‘you can only play what’s put in front of you’? Southgate doesn’t make the draws and I’m pretty sure he’s not bribing people.Darthlaw wrote: ↑Mon Nov 22, 2021 8:32 pmMakes sense.

I just find him boring and at times tactically timid. Blessed with some real talent so fingers crossed he's learnt from his big game mistakes.

Wasn't a slight on Southgate at all. I was just pointing out what he (and basically every other England manager) does. Beat no marks, get dumped out by good teams. Throw Glen, Sven, Fabio and Roy into the same bracket.
Only ones who couldn't even manage that were Keegan and McClaren and they got rightly hoofed.

The same Germany that had just been beaten by North Macedonia, won one game in the group and didnt even make knockout in the previous world cup in a group with South Korea and Mexico.
It's fair to suggest it was a 'poor' Germany. Even more so the way they played against England.

Re: Southgate signs New England contract
Not sure getting beat on penalties by a very good Italy in a major final is a bad result mate. Semis and final in consecutive major finals hasn’t been achieved by any England manager before. You don’t get that lucky. Even the much vaunted and strangely well loved Venables managed only one semi (no pun intended ). Personally I thought Venables was a waste of space but that is just my view. Why can’t people just accept Southgate? Will people still be saying he’s rubbish if he makes a third semi or even wins it? The problem for his detractors is if he wins Qatar he will officially be far and away the best manager we have ever had. By a mile.Darthlaw wrote: ↑Mon Nov 22, 2021 8:46 pmWasn't a slight on Southgate at all. I was just pointing out what he (and basically every other England manager) does. Re: Southgate signs New England contract
The Semi final and final headlines will of course keep certain fans happy who choose to ignore the detail. Like ignoring how poor England were in that game against Italy, or Southgates bizarre subs and choice of penalty takers.
Southgate’s team has hammered dross like Panama but lost to Belgium (twice), battered Ukraine but beaten by Italy. The detail is England lose to the big teams in tournaments, regardless of the manager.
I accept Southgate as he is fit for purpose as I’ve already said. Proof is in the fact he wouldn’t even get a sniff of a PL job.

Re: Southgate signs New England contract
Germany are never a bad side…ever. Even a ‘bad’ Germany are better than most. Are you however admitting that Southgate is possibly the best manager we’ve had? Ramsey won the World Cup but never achieved the consistency Southgate has. Look at our standing now. I would fancy us to give absolutely anyone a game now and I can’t remember saying that since Ramsey. When he got the job I thought the FA had taken leave of its senses. I was wrong and so my friend are you.
