That link says games will be cancelled if a referee cannot "guarantee the safety" of the players.

Using this logic we should never ever ever play football at all. Not ever.

This is a cowardly decision and part of a wider cowardice whereby the slightest of risks leads to stupid decisions.
Obviously guaranteeing the safety of the players ìs in the context of the adverse weather conditions.

It's clearly a combination of factors and not just health and safety.

I can’t believe they don’t run all big decisions past Rowls as he knows so much more than everyone else.

If we decided whether games are played based on weather forecasts and what the temp might be we’d barely play between November and February.
It hasn't been decided on the weather forecast, the game is deemed unplayable now. If however there was a chance that the weather forecast in the next few hours was good enough to allow a short delay with the prospect of the conditions becoming playable then thats a decision the ref could have taken.

Exactly. Can you imagine the reaction on here if we'd have attempted to play in those hideous conditions and Cornet did an ACL?

All these people slagging off the people in authority for calling this game off, are the same type of people who'd be the first on the phone to an injury lawyer should they fall on ice in or around the stadium footprint.
That’s a sweeping assumption.

I’d suggest it’s more likely the opposite, and that those who are happy to put up with adverse conditions, are the least likely to blame others should their decision result in accident or injury.

So how's the weather in Burnley right now?

Is it still physically impossible to play a game of football?

There's a surprise.

What a waste of everybody's time and money.

Really feel for the supporters who travelled and had their time and money wasted.

Referee should hang his head in shame and think about how much people spend on football before jumping to cowardly decisions in the name of risk aversion.

Impossible to play football on a pitch that would have been cleared?

Impossible to play the game a tiny bit later rather than waste everybody else's money and time?

Yep. We’ve all been there. Exeter and Watford a couple of my personal favourites. Home to Torquay in the late 80s also springs to mind. One that went the other way was Plymouth in 81/82: one of a handful of games played that day but would never have been played if it were today.

The pitch would have been cleared.

It is perfectly possible to play football in a bit of snow.

The referee could have simply delayed it an hour.

That pitch will be perfectly playable.

The fans should take themselves into consideration. You do things like watch the weather forecast or look out of the window before you decide to rock up in shirt and sandals or boots, overcoat, hat & scarf.

The health and safety officer at the club can postpone the match if they think the conditions are dangerous to the general public.

This is not the case today which is why I haven't mentioned it.

Do you always cower indoors when it is cold "just in case"?
Have you never been outside in the snow in your life?
I'll be out and about working tonight and it's forecasting snow here at 3pm.

You can carry being annoyed but you don't know what the health and safety officer at the club has said to the ref, same with local emergency services etc
The ref will talk to multiple people before calling it off, Inc club officials

Why you focusing just on the playing of the game? Getting 18000 people to and from the game is a very big risk with the state of the surrounding areas. Even if the snow fall has slowed its still heavy. As the day goes on the snow will freeze making it even more hazardous. Why can’t you see the bigger picture that the match officials and police have to look at?

It's pathetic GodIsADeeJay81.

The referee should NOT be talking to the ground safety officer. His only decision is on the pitch.

The ground safety officer tells the referee if the match needs to be called off due to some perilous danger to the public. Not the other way round.

The pitch is not currently playable. But delaying the kick off could've been an option because the weather is certainty improving. I imagine it's easier said than done though but not insurmountable.

Game could very easily been played at 3pm, waited for Conte's arrival before a decision was made. He's obviously going to want it called off. Joke

I fancied us today and with a gap starting to emerge (above Leeds, anyway), I really wanted this game played. Brentford winning already, another team that (in my opinion) we have to finish above to stay up. As I type, Watford just equalised at Leicester and again, they’re a team I would have hoped we could perhaps finish above.

We’re playing well but the teams above us are getting the wins that we aren’t - sometimes a gap emerging just becomes too big a hurdle to overcome. Really wanted us to get a win today. I appreciate this is not a weather post per se, just trying to stress my annoyance and worry it’s happened, we could have done with it against a really poor (currently) Spurs side.

Coming down hard again in Rawtenstall. So some of you want supporters sitting on the football ground for an extra hour or two in freezing conditions to see if game can go ahead later.

People just say "safety" these days like that trumps everything.

It's the equivalent of "I couldn't do X because of 'personal reasons' " as if it gives you an automatic free pass. It's cowardly and takes no account of the expense and time people have gone to to get to the game.

I feel especially sorry for the Tottenham supporters who travelled but there will be plenty of Burnley fans who travelled great distances to watch this game.

"IT'S FREEZING", you say? Well guess what? It's winter - it will be cold. That's what it's like in the UK.

Cold weather is not a "safety" issue. It means people should wear appropriate clothes.

They could easily have at least waited an hour to see if the pitch was playable, especially as the forecast is that the sleet and snow is going to end very shortly.

Whoever has made this decision has done so out of a warped sense of risk aversion trumping all other considerations. It's cowardly and unfair on the supporters.

Wait and see what the weather is like at 3pm or 4pm when this game could very, very easily have been played.
Someone is disappointed & having a hissy fit!
Get over it.

Agree with all of this. Seeing their defence of Sanchez, Dier and Davies I was quite confident of getting something.

Just got back home (Reedley). Roads log jammed in and around Burnley centre. Snow now easing off / stopped, but given how much snow came down and when, it’s not surprising the game was called off. Got to feel sorry for all the fans who travelled long distances to be here.

They stopped clearing the snow because it was quickly recovering as confirmed by Dyche.

But now the weather has improved a 4pm kick-off would seem to be a realistic option giving time for the pitch to be cleared again.

I know there's no doubt in your mind, and well done for sticking to your guns, but there will be a range influencing factors you or I don't need to consider.

If people don't get angry about this kind of crap then it will happen.

If the referee isn't made to think about what he's done and learn from this mistake he'll do the same thing again.
