Sky sports news Kaveh Solhekol has made some very interesting claims regarding Chris Wood’s future, following interest from Newcastle United.

He insists that Burnley have no interest in selling either him or star centre-back James Tarkowski to a relegation rival, but hints that a potential release clause in Wood’s contract could change things.

Sky Sports reporter claims that there ‘has been some suggestions’ that there is a buyout clause in the 30-year-old’s current deal; meaning Burnley would be powerless to keeping him if we activated it and the player himself was keen to sign.
Hope the buyout clause is high, and if there's any chance of Wood leaving we need to have a replacement lined up sharpish.

If Wood is going, then get it sorted quickly, and then we can plan for any incomings, the worst outcome for us is he exits right at the end of the window, and we then struggle to get somebody in at the last minute.

And would Dwight Gayle even want to come to Burnley, I suppose the advantage is we can offer him regular 1st team football,
I think he would. He’s good enough to keep Jay on the bench and it’s clear dyche doesn’t like anyone else. I’m sure he knows full Well that after jan he’s unlikely to kick a ball for the geordies again.

A release clause just means we have to let the player know

He might not agree or want to discuss with them

Bigger club, more money and a better chance of premier league football next season. He’d be gone like a shot.

If he did sign for them now, he won’t be first choice striker there next season if they stayed up as they’ll be splashing the cash in the summer

I’m not sure he would care. He will be a 31 year old striker on close to 100k a week I imagine

This is the latest in relation to Wood and his release clause.

“This is starting to look like it is the case #nufc. As revealed by @TeleFootball yesterday he had emerged as priority target and they hoped to sign him this week. This will explain why”

Don’t understand why either us or Wood himself would have wanted that buy out clause in his contract. He’s been a great player for us but I think if said clause is activated, we won’t be too upset and Newcastle might not be signing the player they think they are.

The lad is a minimum 10 goal a season player, and will.improve given better tatics and service, I'm ****** with his effort for us at the moment...but the lad can score when given the proper service.

Some rumours on twitter that the buy out clause is £20m. Not sure why we’d sign him for £15m and have a buy out clause £5m higher!

I can only assume it was added in as part of his contract extension?

If Newcastle were to drag it out and meet the buyout late Jan, and wood goes. We are powerless and we won't have time to sign anyone at short notice.
That is what I'd do if I were Newcastle. Let's hope they don't as they can literally do us over 2 fold just because they can.

Be an idea to keep our 1st team players and sign extra players of that level and above if we want to stay up.

Ideas like sell Wood, get Gayle in return and then what, continue to pump it over the top at a 5 foot 9 striker then the realisation that at 32 combined with a lack of 1st team games he’s lost half a yard of pace.

Maybe keep Wood and get a player like Gayle is more of an answer

He’s been beyond useless this season.

Of course we could have been seeing jet-leg and tiredness in the early season, could also possibly have had his head turned while away. Of course it could be just a bunch of journalists with nothing better to do on a quiet day, doing their bit to unsettle the club and ensure we go down without a fight so they can finally stop having to discuss us.

We don’t need unsettling… I reckon other clubs fans are looking at the table and not even factoring us in as a team who can possibly stay up. Like we are writing Norwich and Watford off, they will ALL be doing that with us, and they have a point.

Given Newcastle have crazy investments I'm pretty sure every agency has offered every player too them. They probably have thousands of offers.

We should target their rejects. They have one or two decent players who they likely will let move on for little money.

Shift Tarks to them as well in Jan for maybe for 8m.

Replace Tarks with Collins, use the 8m to pay off Dyche and get someone who plays ball to feet instead of Cornet trying to win the ball in the air against a 6’4” defender.

Maybe I’m too simplistic. 😱

Don't get the sudden dislike for Wood. Granted he has not scored many this season but the service is atrocious.
But he by far our best centre forward.
Put him on the end of Trippiers crosses and see then.

He’s missed an absolute blatherload of chances this year while, also, being the most powderpuff 6’4” player in the history of the game.

I’m 58 and 5’11 but I reckon I’d at least give the defenders a hard time if nothing else.

Wood is a fox in the box but this season ha hasn't been taking his chances. Was the same first half of last season then he performed amazing in the second half.

The problem with playing him when he doesn't deliver is that he doesn't add anything else to the team.

I'm sure we'll persist with him because he's the best at being in the right place at the right time but I don't really think he improves players around him because he struggles to hold up the ball, link up with play and make simple passes.

His only other traits apart from goal poaching is trying to beat the offside trap and running into channels. The former is very hard for him because he's not very fast and the letter doesn't usually come to anything because he either can't hold up the ball or can't pass.

All of our other strikers have a better all round game but also aren't scoring. They at least can bring others into play around them and make space though.

At least it shows that Newcastle have no coherent transfer policy.

A case of sign enough players and see if they work.

Newcastle are just bidding for players left right and centre in blind panic. Fortunately for them they can just keep chucking more and more cash at it to make sure something comes off. Used to have a soft spot for them but would love to see these new acquisitions fail and for them to drop ( as would most fans no doubt). Won’t make it easier to get out of the Champ for any other team next season though.

I’d sell Wood for 25 million. He’s 30 years old now. Use the money and invest in a younger striker who we can sell for more in a few years.

Yep.

All part of a production line that we really should have set up by now after 6 years in the Prem.

Sell when the price is high, and use the money to not only buy a ready made replacement but refresh the squad as a whole.

The ideal end result is a squad with young players with potential, that can command a few should we be relegated to offset the drop in tv money.

Instead we’ve had to self fund players from our own pot of self generated money, that has been ever dwindling because of the increase in our wages. In theory, and if done properly, the money needed for transfers could be separate and self sufficient.

Not having any sort of respectable scouting network in place, particularly abroad, has really cost us.

If he's got a release clause and Newcastle meet it then there's nothing we can do to stop him going.

I do agree on selling Wood if we can and investing in 1 or maybe 2 younger strikers that may have increased value down the line.

However the worry is if Wood departs this window, that leaves us with Barnes (injured) Jay (who's not scored this season) and Vydra (who's also injured, and scored 1 this season).

I get what your saying
I’m saying get Gayle or the like to play with Wood and not to replace him.

I’d also play a 5’ve at the back now
With Collins sat in front of Mee & Tarks not replacing Tarks
Our midfield isn’t strong enough to protect a back 4

Don't get the sudden dislike for Wood. Granted he has not scored many this season but the service is atrocious.
But he by far our best centre forward.
Put him on the end of Trippiers crosses and see then.

I don’t understand Newcastle. They have the money to buy premium players. Better than Wood, Mee or Tarkowski !
Unsettle a relegation rival.

Tripps signed for the challenge not the money. Would be the same for Chris Wood I think.

Or just that they are being linked with every player in the league and did not want Burnley to feel left out.

I think the thing is with Burnley (and Norwich) players they have the added factor that while most players will be wary of going to Newcastle in case they’re relegated, our players are already wary of getting relegated.

The difference is moving to Newcastle gives them an up… they have not created the mess and therefore (should) start with a clean slate, rather than be part of the team that got them there… potential heroes on big pay increases, rather than trying to turn around their own mess and potentially being surplus to requirements in summer anyway. There are many reasons a Burnley player could fancy it, not only but not least the £ notes.
