4-2-3-1 ?
4-2-3-1 ?
Just about to watch Arsenal
V West Ham (sadly) and I notice both teams are using a 4-2-3-1 formation
Not that we ever will but what would your Burnley team be in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Mine would be
Pope
Lowton Tarks Mee Taylor
Cork Brownhill
Cornet Westwood. McNeil
Wood
Much harder to select than usual 4-4-3

Cork out of that, Westwood never seen being a 10. JBG in.
Re: 4-2-3-1 ?
Don’t see JBG as a defensive midfielder. Corky has the experience in a more defensive role. Amazing how many more different options it gives you

Unlikely that we will see it in it’s true form - but the 4411, 451 and 433 are all variations of the same thing.
It would be great to see:
Cornet McNeil JBG
Wood/Jay/Vydra

He's been good at what exactly?Iloveyoubrady wrote: ↑Wed Dec 15, 2021 11:46 pmApart from the fact he’s been pretty good this season, is good running with the ball, good shot, good passer. Yeah nothing.
Good shot? 3 goals since 2018-19
Good passer? 2 assists since 2018-19.
Running with the ball? he's painfully slow and one footed, offers absolutely zilch to us going forward and hasn't for 3 years.

Re: 4-2-3-1 ?
I agree. Offers less in a wide right than he’s ever done before. But at this stage in careers, players often shift to positions where their current skills (experience, tenacity) replace the skills they’re losing (pace, crossing). Absolute no brainer to consider other positions rather than your “open your damn eyes” vitriol.
I think he’d do well in a deeper, central midfield role personally.

4-4-3 might give us an advantage. Can we try 5-4-3-2 and see if anyone notices?FCBurnley wrote: ↑Wed Dec 15, 2021 8:08 pmJust about to watch Arsenal

Re: 4-2-3-1 ?
What JBG hasn't done at all this season is really offer a consistent attacking threat, but what he's always been really good at is his defensive work for the team.
He's match fit, so can still offer that, and he's certainly our best wide man in that, but we wait to see if he can refind his attacking form as well

JBG follows a pattern that lots of our signings follow. They come in and offer an exciting attacking threat, which over time disappears and they become defensive, dull 6/10 type of players.

In his case though, its been a couple of seasons of injuries and he's still feeling his way back from thatclaret2018 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 16, 2021 10:47 amJBG follows a pattern that lots of our signings follow. I'd be amazed if he got a new contract in the summer, but I hope he can get back to what he was because he was an essentially player for us

Re: 4-2-3-1 ?
Identifying formations on paper often assumes that the players will rigidly be found during a game in this position. But if 2 out of the 3 are also expected to play wide and track whilst the other supports the lone striker, then you have 4-4-2.

Back in the day the 3-2-1 formation used by Ted Rogers always worked well.
