Sometimes it can be your fridge that's overfilled and not cooling correctly. We made this mistake with some butcher brought chickens (for a large family barbecue) a couple of years ago. I bought a fridge thermometer after that costly mistake.

Some of the Aldi stuff really is as good as the more ‘upmarket’ supermarkets - their specially selected fish cakes and mince pies are as good if not better than anything from Booth’s or M&S, but some of it is budget too.

And you can buy 5% fat steak mince from there so that’s a mistake on your missus’ part.

Know where you are coming from, this myth about fresh fruit and veg is nonsense, if you can be arsed you can get some good bargains and good quality but that’s the same anywhere.

Aldi pay their staff £9.55/hour.
London staff get £11.07/hour.

These cheap prices are the benefit of free trade and we should be grateful for the bounty we gave.

If I was a younger person getting a job, then Aldi would be better. You would learn the roles faster and get better at your job. You could work anywhere in the trade afterwards.
Not sure you learn much on the tills at Tesco. It's very easy but suits an older type who likes a quick chat with customers.

So when these prices dropped from their original prices, did the wages also drop? No. Actually no-one has been taken advantage of for us all to get those cheap prices have they? In actual fact, people (customers) who would ordinarily struggle to fill their table with food on Xmas day that would ordinarily go to waste can now do so. Surely you will be happy about that?

Life is very often what you make of it. There are plenty of reasons to feel unfulfilled (and a job you're not happy in is one of them) but we have so many reasons to be grateful staring us in the face here in the UK.

Aldi is one of them. Next time you go in, just take a lot at the wondrous produce all around you. Much of it from half way round the world.

Take, for example, the famed boxes of Quality Street. A lot has been made of their shrinking size recently but did you know that when inflation adjusted, the chocolates inside are IRO 55% cheaper than they were when the 5kg tins were available?

Have a wander down their cooking isle and look at how many milk alternatives are available - in Aldi! This isn't a Waitrose in some fancy south east communter belt town and yet if the fancy takes you, you can pick up almond milk.

Almond. Milk. Let that alone sink in.

We have such easy lives that we've come not to realise what bountiful wealth and abundance we have all around us and we've forgotten how to be grateful for it.

People from only 2 or 3 generations ago would be floored by the scope and ready availability of the produce we have available to us all. When they discovered our relative wealth they would be even more flabbergasted. People who suffered wartime privations might well weep tears of joy to see the a regular aisle in Aldi.

People from 3 or 4 generations ago would never have the chance in their lifetime to see half the things available in your average Aldi. They'd struggle to comprehend how it was even possible. They think of us as gluttons who had either made a deal with the Devil or were all living as delirous millionaires.

So yeah, a career at Aldi might not be for everybody but some people might very well enjoy it. It's what you make of it. If you enjoy working with your hands, aren't afraid of physical work and have a great time with your colleagues then you might well have the best time of your life.

Even if it's "only" a temporary job you might still have a great time working there.

And what are you actually "achieving" by working at Aldi - you're being an essential part of the process by which all this amazing produce and goods is provided to your local town and community.

I think there is so much to be grateful for in this world. Aldi included.

I’m talking generally on the day-to-day. Less food waste? Great. Making a loss on produce hits those on the ‘frontline’ though. Regular cheap prices aren’t brought about by the goodness of Aldi’s hearts.

No complaints from me about those who struggle managing to put a good meal on the table.

There’s a lot of nonsense and snobbery on here. The food at Aldi is just as good quality as Tesco and sainsburys. It’s way cheaper as well. The variety on offer is less but if you cook from scratch then that doesn’t really matter. Just need to go to Tesco occasionally for something that Aldi don’t sell. Don’t know why thd staff would be under appreciated. Everyone seems friendly and polite to them. They get paid more and do work a bit harder on the tills but this is good isn’t it. Work harder get paid more.

Supermarket meat is mass produced and notoriously bland. It has its place in society but treat yourself every now and again to meat from an animal reared properly - outdoors eating naturaly produce like grass, hay or meal.

Sometimes, all you need when you have a great piece of meat is just a little salt next to it.

I actually daren't look at their prices because I suspect it's a lot more than the pork in Aldi but I will treat myself to some of their stuff when I'm next in the area and I'm especially keen to sample their charcuterie.

I never used to really enjoy a chilli until a friend shared their recipe.

Now make it regularly using braising steak / silverside / featherblade or another slow cooker cut in chunks. Start off frying off some spicy chorizo then use the oil to soften the onion and garlic. My current recipe includes ancho chillies, birds eye chillis, cumin, allspice, Corriander seeds, bay leaves, cider vinegar, cloves & cinnamon (among other things).

I'm now obligated to cook extra every batch and deliver around to friends and family. Good job its a labour of love. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.

Happy to share the recipe if anyone is interested.

Aldi and Asda are next to each other near me thankfully, as Aldi are good for some stuff, and not so good for other stuff

Aldi is the only place around here we can get Frikandel. Due to the ongoing situation we rarely visit supermarkets anymore but I highly recommend Frikandel to anyone who fancies a high quality European cuisine. Their Bratwursts are the best of any Supermarket as well.

ALDI was ok about 5 or 6 years ago. Almost everything there now is rubbish- the fruit and veg, meat etc.

Tesco has gone ludicrously expensive now, and their quality seems to have nosedived.

Sainsburys for the weekly big shop, an occasional Lidl shop to mix it up, treats from Booths and Waitrose.

Sausage from Cowmans in Clitheroe always though!

Aldi is no worse than other “bigger” supermarkets. All meat is at a lower standard than restaurant quality. It’s pumped with water to preserve it and for it to weigh more.

The veg is spot on. Less choice than others but what they do have is equally as good as what you can get else were. If your veg is going off quick, take it out of the packets. It stops it sweating.

But that improves the flavour your own portion too; chilli and bolognaise sauce too always turn out far better when you're making a huge pot of them rather than if you try cooking it with 1/2lb of mince for just two servings; add coffee (as mentioned earlier) and cook/reheat at least twice before serving.

I was doing a big shop with my 2 year old daughter in the trolley. 90 quids worth of food piled high in Aldi trolleys.


I started to load the shopping on the conveyer, and I hadn’t even finished loaded and the check out women had scanned about 30 items which were now slung past the toll waiting to be packed. I thought “I’m not rushing” I was alright stressed because my daughter was becoming restless. So I finished loading and started methodically packing my shopping into a blue ikea bag which which fills most of the trolley. The check out women snapped “can you pack over there”

I calmly said “no, I’m going to pack here”

She shouted “no the rules are you have to pack over there”

I calmly explained “I know your rules, but I’m going to pack here”

She screamed “you can’t because of covid”

I said “it’s nothing to do with covid, that’s always been your policy, anyway I would have to avoid my large ikea bag to put the stuff in the trolley. Now we could argue about this but I’m not going to pack over there so you’re wasting your time”

At this point the manager came out and exclaimed “you have to pack over there”

“Yeah that’s not going to happen” I said

Anyway I finished my methodical packing and was subsequently banned.
