Another one off
Tuesdays game between Arsenal & Wolves is the latest game to be postponed
"A combination of positive Covid-19 test results and injuries led to Wolves requesting for the fixture to be postponed," said a Wolves statement.

it's a farce, can the season and be done with it. Also, if we were 4th I would not be saying this, but as we are in the bottom 3 the most logical and fair thing for world football is for us to scrap it

Re: Another one off
We’d be in a better position if we carried on and got relegated than if they cancelled the season.
Re: Another one off
Surely 'cancelling ' the season in late December is a little premature?
Maybe putting a hold on things and allowing it to finish late would be more realistic.
It may have an impact on other competitions but this is a situation which is pretty much global and as such, wide ranging adjustments may have to be negotiated.

Surely now they are better off carrying on as there can't be many players left that haven't had it.

Re: Another one off
They can’t finish it any later. They are internationals in June that Fifa will not allow to be moved, and with the world cup next year and next season starting earlier, plus they have to give all players a few weeks off before next season starts, makes extending the season this year very unlikely.Billyblah wrote: ↑Sun Dec 26, 2021 9:28 pmSurely 'cancelling ' the season in late December is a little premature?

Perhaps one solution could be to can the league cup for a season and play the postponed games at times that would have been league cup days.

Cancelling all European comps would free up enough midweek slots for everyone to complete on time

The one advantage out of our long list of postponements, is so far none have been against teams competing in Europe, even Spurs have now departed the European scene for this season, so depending on how the next few weeks pan out, you'd hope we'd be able to rearrange these delayed games for blank midweeks, not ideal I know especially for the fans, but we don't currently have many other options.

Re: Another one off
Given UEFA's hardline treatment of Tottenham, I wonder how many of our " Big " clubs will be asking for weekend Premier League games to be postponed knowing there will be no consequences, but then suddenly will be able to field a team to fly to some far-flung corner of Europe on the following Tuesday/Wednesday night ....

UEFA's hot on the idea that PL matches can't clash with European weeks. Whether that can be ignored in these circumstances, I don't know. I have a vague memory that it happened once last year.tiger76 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 27, 2021 4:09 pmAye! and that's really gonna happen isn't it.

Yes I've seen that mentioned on here before, tough I'm afraid they'll have to show some flexibility in the circumstances, otherwise we'll never finish the season at this rate.

Why wreck our domestic programme when there are all those superfluous games like the European matches and unternationals.
Re: Another one off
I think Everton v Newcastle will go ahead as well. With Wilson and St Maximin both likely to be out injured, I wouldn't be at all surprised is Everton's "injuries! clear up and they are able to raise a team after all.

Re: Another one off
Return the champions league to, oh I don’t know, just the champions!! That would eliminate about 50+ pointless games all over Europe.
Can this conference thingy. I’m not even sure what it is.
Have the Champions league.
Keep The Europa league, and re-instate the Cup Winners Cup. Less matches, more meaningful matches.
In England, make the league cup just for EFL clubs.
Scrap the other one they have EFL Trophy or whatever it’s called.
They complain about to many matches every year. Then come up with new competitions. Attendances for all these cups are dwindling year on year. Artificial inflated by cheap tickets.
At some point, they’ve got to realise they’ve flogged this horse to death and beyond.
Then we have the stupidity of FIFA wanting a biannual World Cup… FFS.

Re: Another one off
More like the Saudis trying to get their match at Everton postponed.
"Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said his side are "dangerously close" to not being able to field a team for their Premier League game at Everton on 30 December.
Before the 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Monday, Howe said his squad was "stretched" and had a "mixture of injuries and Covid-19 cases".
Forwards Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin both then suffered injures during the game at St James' Park.
Howe fears Wilson could be facing "months" on the sidelines.
Newcastle are 19th in the table, two points behind 17th-placed Watford.
"Callum's injury looks severe, weeks maybe months," Howe told BBC Radio 5 Live. "I feared for him when he went down with nobody around him. A pull, not a knock."
The Newcastle boss could only name eight substitutes against Manchester United, including two goalkeepers and two teenagers who had not started a Premier League match.
"The lads gave everything but we are thin on the ground in terms of bodies," he told Sky Sports.
"These are difficult moments for us. I believe it's 13 plus a goalkeeper [to have enough players for a game]. We're going to be dangerously close to that number."

Absolute nonsense, this is turning into a bloody Christmas pantomime. The league has no credibility whatsoever, this is a hugely dangerous precedents they are setting for the reason for cancelling fixtures.

Re: Another one off
I'm old enough to remember the days when if a team lost players through injury, it was tough luck and they had to field a team using their squad, or even their youth lads, would you believe!
Disgraceful decision, in all seriousness, and the league just cannot carry on like this.

And Newcastle will presumably be off on Tuesday as well.
**** em, up to us to get two results and put some daylight between us and pile more pressure on them. (If we play twice, of course)

Re: Another one off
17 PL fixtures postponed so far, although one of those was our weather affected clash with Spurs.
If we get a bad spell of winter weather, which although doesn't seem imminent you can never rule out in the UK, then the calendar really will be all to pot.
Heavily convenient for Newcastle to get this one off when their star men are injured isn't it.

Re: Another one off
Not to be melodramatic but this repeatedly happening has pretty much killed off my interest in this season, I couldn’t really care less what happens.
Went to a non league game yesterday and had such a better time than I have had at the turf for ages, don’t think I’ll be going back to the Turf whilst we are in the PL.

Newcastles last game before the transfer window while their two best players are injured - how convenient. Let’s see how fast that chequebook moves.

No in this day and age it shouldn't come into play, but even if we get a clear window between now and May it's going to be a hectic schedule, and that's assuming no more fall by the wayside, which in the present climate is optimistic.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Dec 28, 2021 8:50 pmNot often games are called off because of weather. It stinks
"Hi, It's Eddie. We only have 14 players available. Can you call it off?"
"14 is fine Eddie, are you sure you didn't mean 13?"
"Ah, yes. Jeff Hendrick has been summoned to the Embassy. 13. We have 13 players"
"No worries. Just let us know when you've bought all the replacements you need!"
"Hi, It's Sean. I'm down to 6 players. 14 have COVID despite being fully vaccinated, and the others all have serious injuries and will be out for weeks. They aren't just knocks, no-one's touch and go."
"Sorry Sean. We take each request on a case by case basis, and we will have to deny your request at this time. But keep it to yourself. We will make sure we release a statement once everyone's in their seats!"

When Steve Cotterill first became Burnley manager, he made 5 signings that summer which took our squad to a total of 13 senior players. We were on the cusp every single week. How many games did we have called off because of injury during that season?Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 28, 2021 8:54 pmTbf didn’t Eddie Howe say after the game last night that they were on the cusp with only 13 fits and covid free players

I'm not defending EH or Newcastle, but 2 of those 19 were keepers, and 2 were teenagers with no previous PL experience.Milltown1882 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 28, 2021 8:56 pmThey had 19 in the squad last night - ASM and Wilson injured leaves 17. The PL are wholly to blame, once they set the precedent by scrubbing games this was always on the cards.

That literally has nothing to do with this situation at all.
If clubs are not owned in the correct fashion that is completely different to clubs not being able to fill a match day squad due to covid and injuries

What happened was that when we got injuries, we had to sometimes use players we'd really rather not have done. Newcastle and others would have had to do the same in years gone by.
Now we have a situation where you can get a game called off if your best players are injured and you don't really fancy your chances at the moment. And some say it's about the integrity of the league. Haha.

Or is it simply they can’t fill the fixture because they have covid cases and injuries?
