The contract situation
The contract situation
What the absolute f**k is going on at our club?
half of our squad can now discuss terms and sign contracts with clubs abroad.
Including our 2 starting central defenders and club captain?
Does Dyche want all 10 to leave? is Pace refusing to sanction extensions?
Ideally we'd let all 10 go but this uncertainty cannot be helping the team at all. Not really much of a mention about it from Dyche either, no clarity anyway. Dyche was publicly pretty angry at Garlick for not handing Bardsley, Hendrick and Lennon extensions but he's happy with ALK?
I think to try and salvage the season and get heads screwed back on i'd hand Mee and Westwood 2 year deals.

Re: The contract situation
Who would take 80% of them? Think having your starting CBs in the last 6 months of their contract is lunacy, what’s to stop them having their eye off the ball now? Cynical side of me wonders how could Tarks be motivated now when he knows he can go to Newcastle any time?
Re: The contract situation
What more than half the squad at the same time want to run their contracts down? when non of them (bar 1) will likely get a more lucrative deal elsewhere.fidelcastro wrote: ↑Sun Jan 02, 2022 4:21 pmSometimes players prefer to run their contracts down.

If that many want to leave then that's even more worrying than the silence.

I agree, who would want them in the Prem? Tarks aside, who's been poor, who'll want the likes of Mee & Cork? Re: The contract situation
Some of those OOC players would no doubt love a new deal, but it's possible that not all are wanted beyond the end of the season.
If clubs come in for any of them, we may choose to take nominal fees, but which division we're in next season will no doubt be a factor too. After today's result though, I think we're a bit further into knowing the answer to that last question.

Fair point but what you misunderstand is you can't build a brand new squad in 2 windows. If they didn't want these w0 players we should have recruited more in the summer.randomclaret2 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 02, 2022 4:36 pmOur new owners, seeing football with a fresh eye, maybe wondering why they should be offering new contracts to players who cant win a game

Regardless of the current league position/performances they knew 10 players were out of contract. They knew that last January yet nothing spent.randomclaret2 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 02, 2022 4:48 pmPresumably in the summer they werent expecting we'd only have won one game by now. I actually agree with you...I just think that things are maybe going to be done differently to the way that they have always been done previously, simply because we have new owners in who will want to do it their way. Perhaps they simply refuse to give contracts ahead of time to players who are not performing.

It's a mess. But maybe taking a step back and regrouping wouldn't be a bad idea?
Re: The contract situation
I agree completely, I'd start again and full rebuild, let all 10 players go and bring in a young forward thinking modern manager and staff. I think it's time we shook the boring hoofball physical brexit Burnley tag once and for all. Get the fans back onside with some attacking football, young exciting talent and destroy everyone on the way to a Championship title win next year.burnley007 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 02, 2022 6:17 pmIt's a mess. It's just strange we've allowed ourselves to get into this position when we're so reliant on players who are out of contract so soon. Why is Collins not starting? he hasn't put a foot wrong all season and is clearly not going anywhere in a hurry. Why is Mee still club captain if he's leaving?
Cork, Westwood and Stephens are 3 of our 4 CM options, all 3 are out of contract in 6 months, why did we not recruit so we didn't need to rely on these players we planned to not keep around?

Long and Collins doesnt sound a bad CB pairing in the championship, but that leaves 2 more CB's to be recruited for a start

maybe I'm putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5 but something doesn't quite sit right with the promotion of Steve Stone to replace Tony Loughlan especially after he was suspended from the club pending the internal review, I don't know what for but we've all heard the rumours.

Re: The contract situation
As far as I am aware Tarks and Mee have been offered new contracts, Tarks has made his feelings known whilst Mee is happy to see what happens towards the end of the season (and you can understand him playing a waiting game for now given our current position)
Cork and even Barnes have options that the club could take up if required
As for the rest, I wouldn't be that bothered if all were let go - none are contributing much anyway (and that is because, even when we are playing so badly, they can't get starts)
And we still have JBG and Long contracted to next season
Excellent planning for the future

Collins hasn't put a foot wrong this season, he's young and the future here but instead we are pandering to 2 senior pros? and 1 is the club captain?
We are expecting 100% commitment from players who aren't willing to commit to staying here beyond 6 months.

Long is, in my opinion, a symptom of what is wrong with the squad.
How many are prepared to sit on a fat wage and never challenge for a start?
OK, in a few posts someone is going to play the old "loyalty" card
Re: The contract situation
I don't mind Kev Long actually, every squad needs players who accept their role isn't starting each week and Long has never caused any issues or unrest unlike Gibson.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Sun Jan 02, 2022 6:40 pmLong is, in my opinion, a symptom of what is wrong with the squad.

Barnes - time to go
Jay Rod - maybe keep as sub
Bardsley - retiring isn't he?
Vydra - only 29, but he won't want to stay and dick around on the bench..
Tarks - we all know he's off
Mee - I'd keep him
Cork - time to go
Pieters - maybe one more year left in him for us
Lennon - you know my opinion
Stephens - I know your opinion
This window and next we're going to need a lot of work, between 5-10 players, all younger and hungrier.

I see the contract situation as a positive thing if we go down. Most on that list are really underperforming or have made it known they want to go. Out of that list I'd only keep Mee and Pieters. The rest can go. Big wages too most likely.

Re: The contract situation
Let’s be sensible. They’ve had one. Claiming the last winter window was viable to make an impact is wishful thinking. They get the keys the day the window opens pretty much, there is a lockdown that has such wide ranging impacts, any meaningful chances they had of making an impact were very slim and suggesting otherwise is disingenuous.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 02, 2022 6:38 pmYep and they have two full windows and we have only signed 1 first team starter.
They are just as guilty that we are in this mess
The summer they did have was decent, spectacular by recent standards, but as has been done to death and is recognised by just about everyone, the preceding 4ish windows left us so far behind that it was never going to be enough.
We’re knackered because of underinvestment and a sticking plaster approach to squad management lasting a good few years. I’d give Pace et al a bit more slack than that. But time is definitely against them now.

Re: The contract situation
For me, I don’t think going down is the end of the world. Problem is we’d probably lose a couple of good players - Cornet and McNeil/Pope maybe. If we could convince those 3 to stay, extended deals for Vydra, Mee, Pieters, maybe Cork/jay, and then bring in 1 winger, 1 starting striker, 1 good starting cm and a backup centre half we could line up like:
Pope
Roberts Collins Mee Taylor
Cornet New Brownhill McNeil
Wood New
With good squad depth. I personally think that would walk to the championship title so long as the investment is good. Keeping Cornet would be the hardest part but a squad rebuild is very possible over the next couple of years which is why we need to give dyche and the owners time.

Re: The contract situation
Can't disagree with you, if push came to shove I'd retain Jay Rod, Mee, Pieters, and perhaps Vydra, but I suspect Vydra wants out, however the 3 being retained would be on vastly reduced salaries as far as I'm concerned, and if they don't accept those terms, then fine let them try their luck in finding a new club.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 02, 2022 7:04 pmBarnes - time to go

Re: The contract situation
It’s the right thing to do, Tarks aside, no one in the Prem is going to take any of these players off us. Their only hope of a Prem career is by staying up and re signing.
If we stay up then there are players there who would need to be replaced, But they would do a job in the Champ and may be worth a year extra.
Some just aren’t good enough either way, others are poor value, all are we beyond their physical peak.

Re: The contract situation
I think a complete clear out is needed before we start next season. I'd probably let all of the out of contract players go and hit the refresh button. I do think all of Pope, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor, McNeil, Cornet, and Wood would interest other PL sides, if only as back up options. All have shown they can play effectively at this level.

Wood will have just one year left so not much income there
Pope, Taylor and McNeill will command decent fees
All of the above if other Prem or big Championship clubs come in
Cornet is the saviour as we will make a big profit, providing we have not allowed him to have a release clause but don't forget we had the same situation with Trippier who went for peanuts
But, for God's sake, why are Long and JBG still guaranteed a wage next season
That's down to Dyche - and don't forget he wanted Crouch to stay another season

Re: The contract situation
Still no clarification on this from Dyche? he was raging at Garlick for not offering extensions to Lennon and Hendrick pre lockdown but he's delighted with Pace working at snails pace?
Re: The contract situation
This squad needs clarity, i'm convinced this is playing a major part in what we're watching week in week out.
Re: The contract situation
Actually Dyche is saying nothing about contracts or transfers
He was quick to slag Garlick about everything but clearly he is not confident in making comments about the new owners transfer dealings at all
Pace has offered new (and most likely improved) contracts to Tarks and Mee
As for the rest why offer new deals to players who are now clearly way past their best
Indeed, most of our current game starters are contracted for at least another year after this (inc Long, JBG, Westwood and all three goalkeepers)
Contracts should not be used as an excuse for players just simply not up to it anymore
We need to clear the deadwood out and look to younger options
Something that Dyche will find very hard to deal with

Re: The contract situation
You have a point, but which of the OOC players would you actually try and retain, because based on this seasons form none of them deserve new contracts.
And I thought you wanted us to bring on younger players, if we sign up 3/4 older guys on fairly large wages, that will likely hinder us in recruiting come the summer. as by most accounts funds will be squeezed, and certainly in the event of relegation one of our main priorities will be to reduce the large wage bill, and get value for money from our squad, which in my view hasn't been the case for 2 seasons now.
Re: The contract situation
As I wandered the streets bemoaning our defeat and muttering to the other half I said, you know how this all started Gareth bloody Southgate telling Pope he was not top 3 choice. All of a sudden we go from a good solid unit to a keeper who can't kick the ball and whoosh the slippery slope starts. She just said are you going to watch the cricket tonight!
