I've tried in the past but always fail the first weekend in, this year I cut down over Christmas so don't feel any need to cut back. Full admiration for those with the staying power.

It's not a big deal. Unless your under 25 where alcohol is a big part of your socialising.
I don't count now but I easily did 6 or 7 months off the ale in the first lockdown.

But then cricket in the sunshine happens.

I'm doing damp January, so I won't drink in the house during January but if I go out for a meal or football I'll have a drink or three

Absoluetly not. There's not a more depressing, miserable, grey month in the whole year. If there's ONLY one month you drink, it should be January.

Seven years ago I did dry January for the first time the best thing I ever did for my health.At the time I was drinking everyday and had been for years I was described at the time by a couple of friends as a functioning alcoholic.I would have a minimum of 6 cans a night and more often or not two benders thrown in at weekends.I have read since people who do a dry Jan. Tend to go on to drink less than they did before.When I decided to try and do a month off nobody I knew gave me a chance of doing it even my Mum and my Partner.I always say I will never recreate the good feeling about myself when I'd done a couple of weeks off the booze.Now with other health issues I have had a.i keep well within the 14 units a week.And I don't want to sound sanctimonious I have discovered you really don't need to drink a lot to enjoy yourself

I am, why not? Don't drink massive amounts, most of my friends do, but I'm doing it because it's good for me and I would hope some of my mates might join but not holding hope. Didn't drink huge amounts over Christmas, but to give the liver a rest for a month can't do me any harm.

I’m a big drinker, drink far too much and it’s a huge part of the socialising I do with friends and family so I always do dry Jan usually get to mid Feb.
Everyone’s entitled to their opinions and to some it’s a piece of cake as they only drink once a week max, I struggle at weekends but purely through boredom which kind of tells its own story.

I do wish my friends and family that aren’t doing it wouldn’t give me grief about it all the time and tell me why I shouldn’t do it and to have a beer as it really doesn’t help.

Sounds familiar, I dont drink 6 cans a night, maybe 1-2 but I’ll easily drink 30 pints Thursday-Sunday most weeks and it’s stupid

I don't do Dry January. I don't drink that much these days, so don't really feel the need.

Once a week I might share a bottle of wine with my missus or maybe have a couple of cans of hoppy ale, and that's about it. We like to get out in the open air, either hiking or on the bikes, rather than waste our free time sat at home nursing hangovers - done that too many times in the past.

I'm just avoiding the beer and switching to gin at weekends. A pint of beer has around 200 calories (similar to a jam donut) whereas a single measure of gin contains about 50. I'm going to try and get back into the shape I was in prior to the first lockdown.

Like someone said above, January is too miserable to stop drinking completely.

I don't drink at home and easily managed 5 months dry during the lockdown last year .. I enjoy a few beers in the pubs whether it be
before or after a game, a few in my town or a special trip out .. I work hard and enjoy socialising with friends old and new .. So it's a No
from me ..

I've done it a couple of times including last year which was really hard in light of the fact a very close friend took their own life on 2nd January.

I'm going to do it again this year with exception of one weekend I'm looking forward to spending away for a few days with my wife.

It's a nice reset after the indulgence of Christmas and the fact lots of people get on board helps folk to spur one another on.

Not sure why anyone would be anything other than supportive of an initiative which promotes a healthier lifestyle and offers a support network for those that wish to partake.

Sounds like you’re doing the right things.. realise you have a bit too much normally and taking a month off. A shame you don’t get more support, perhaps they know on some level they should probably be doing the same.

It’s easy to sound sanctimonious now, the challenge would have been doing it in my 20s. When you have maybe 3 or 4 pints a month, dry January isn’t a struggle but an admirable achievement for a heavier drinker.

Problem is if you have a month off and then go on a huge bender you're probably doing just as much damage to your liver as if you drank sensibly through January.
