We are a championship side

Post by DanH90 » Sat Jan 08, 2022 4:43 pm

One thing that was clear from today is that our squad has not got many Premier League quality players in it. Chronic underinvestment for many years has come to bite us.
Premier League or Chanpionship next season our squad needs a total overhaul, and that I worry about.

Pace needs to go all out this window for a CM that can dictate the play, if it costs 25m then so be it, we have to get that sort of player.

If some of these players were to leave tomorrow, where would there next club be? Most would be to bottom half Championship/League 1.

No I haven’t only just realised that, I’ve known this for some time. But actually coming up against a Championship side and being outplayed proves it.

Actually I tend to agree with the OP. First half today I was thinking Stephens, Jay Rod, Lennon and Brownhill all looked pretty good. Then at half time I remembered we were playing a very average Championship side so they they bloody well SHOULD do, because that unfortunately really is their level these days.

A player who can consistently perform at the top level. We have possibly 4 players who can (Pope, McNeil, Tarkowski and Cornet)

It says a lot when your most technical central midfielder, and the only one who can play a ball through the lines on the floor is a 32 year old Dale Stephens.

Thank the lord! Someone finally agrees with me on Brownhill. Running around a lot does not constitute quality. The same goes for Charlie Taylor, now he is just about PL quality but certainly nowhere near as good as Burnley fans make out. His final ball is consistently awful and I dread to think what his assist record is.

Tarky

Cornet

The rest Dwight included wouldn’t get anywhere near a prem side imo

Tarky!!??? At least 2 awful passes when under no pressure to give possession away in our half today and lucky not to get punished (like last week!) and missed our only chance of the second half by heading over from 6 yards unmarked in added time. Get Collins fit and pick him instead next week. (IMO)

We were missing:

Taylor
Vydra
Pieters
Barnes
Roberts
Gudmundson
Collins
McNeil
Cornet

All important members of our squad and and even if Gudmundson, Vydra and McNeil were available today this messageboard would look a whole lot different tonight, as the result would have been different. Our lack of wide men and forwards cost us today, and meant we had a massively unbalanced squad to select from.

If we were going to get a large outbreak of covid then this weekend was perhaps the best one for it to happen and hopefully we will have those affected back next week and any additional cases will be minimal.

No, nothing would have been any different because although they have been very good in their time for us, none of those three players you mention lower down are any longer capable of altering what happened today. Not good enough. Even McNeil flatters to deceive. When did he last actually hurt a team (other than his own!!)?

The balance of the side would have been completely different, you can only have so many square pegs in round holes. We had a right back and a central midfielder on our left side today and one striker in the squad.
No doubt the squad needs a refresh, but let's not be too knee jerk after today, given what we had to select from and then Wood going off it was always going to be a tough day.

The important squad members that you list have mostly been available this season during which we have won just a single PL match and are rooted in the bottom 3. Failed to beat Norwich at home, gave Newcastle their sole PL win of the season and got thrashed by a previously out of form Leeds last weekend.

That may be the case, but this thread is in response to today's result and there are a lot of reactionary responses on that basis. We've had seasons with a far higher percentage of poor performances, no doubt today was poor but you can't ignore the context of the immediate challenges given today's absentees. The bulk of those mentioned have also been an integral part of our most successful period for over 40 years and that's not including the manager and the backroom staff.

No doubt things aren't a bed of roses at the moment, and the players are only human, confidence can't be in a great place currently. The recent negativity within the fanbase really isn't going to help that.

Dyche has made championship players into a premier league team. Too many are premier league in name only, commanding salaries way above their true worth.

Just out of curiosity, do you think that if McNeil was made available for sale, no Premier league clubs would make an offer?

They were on the bench and could be brought on to change the game, with no second forward we were there for the taking second half. You could see that within 60 seconds of the restart.
All we could do was scramble a massively disjointed starting 11 together with a bench made up of defensive players and players without a senior appearance between them.
In previous seasons we have been beaten in cup competitions with better sides out than today and by worse teams.
Don't get me wrong, it was poor, but there were very clear mitigating circumstances. That's not an excuse, it's just the fact of the matter.

7 of those we have the option of clearing out in a few months, and boy do we need a spring clean.

Of those I can only see maybe Brownhill. Cork, Pieters and perhaps Westwood attracting interest from any Championship clubs.

But the question I'd ask is would any of those get in the Bournemouth of Fulham sides, and I'd have to say they probably wouldn't.

Define lit up the PL. Surely a player of his age, that once did light up the league would interest another Premier League side?

In your opinion, why is he now recognisable as that player?

Ultimately, we are not a bad side. In fact we are a really, really good side, but the fact is you only have to be the 18th best side in the best league in the world to be kicked out of it. At present we look like the 18th best side as results show. Can we become the 17th best side (we were last season) or even better? This season I'm really not convinced unfortunately.

WE are so easy and predictable to play against. We will give most PL teams their easiest game of the season in a very competitive league and indeed have done ie Everton, Brighton, Leeds,Norwich,Man Utd-I could go on. Yesterday we played a Championship side with a foreign manager who probably has never heard of Burnley. His coaches will have told him to play 3 at the back as we usually play with two big strikers. It worked-Wood was a passenger all day, went off so all they had to then do was contain Rodriguez. Things must be really dire as I am now wondering when Barnes might be fit-how bad is that.
