Newcastle buying power - A blessing or a curse?
Now reported to have made an enquiry for Chris Wood.
Howe / Trippier / Tarky / Mee / Wood
It's incredibly flattering to think that the richest club in world football are trying to emulate Burnley and is a real barometer of how good we've had it.
Newcastle though - even if they landed all these targets, where's the achievement for them if they stay up? Surely it's a hollow victory for their supporters if they take 3 players from Burnley and survive at our expense. They'll spit those same players out and upgrade again to reach the next level as soon as they've served a purpose of securing survival or getting back out of the championship. The Geordies (proper football supporters by the way) won't be proud of these actions and whilst they'll celebrate any victories, I believe they'll know they are hollow victories.
To some degree even making enquiries about our various players is an underhand tactic which can unsettle us even if they have no intention of finalising these deals.
I'm gradually falling out of love with football at the elite level for these reasons and am starting to question whether I want much more part of it. Burnley was an anomoly and I really hope ALK will continue running our club in a similar mould and ensure sustainability etc but I'm not naive enough to ignore the fact that their drivers are money and therefore some of the gloss has been taken off it even for us. Goodness knows what them proper Newcastle fans will be feeling - very conflicted at least I'd expect.
I went to see my local none league team yesterday and saw 22 players have an honest sporting contest on a ropey pitch. Kids playing on the same pitch at half time. Manager mixing with the supporters after the game. A nice local ale and a chance to win the raffle and a football card. Away fans missing with the homes fans in the best possible way. The whole day out cost me less than a tenner. It was wonderful. I got everything that's lacking from the spectacle served up by Newcastle and their 'priveleged' peers.
Incidentally my local team is in a Borough of Newcastle and the growing crowds are made up of more and more Newcastle fans that are going through the same transition.
ALK has their work cut out, and not just with rebuilding our team but with reconnecting the club with our supporters. I really hope they can pull it off.

I doubt they will worry about it if they stay up and we go down, hollow victory or not.

Giving Eddie money is definitely a very bad idea.He has previous for wasting a fortune at Bournemouth. However if he's prepared to buy Chris Wood for £40m then we should sell him.

No coincidence that since he left we have bombed, most of the super know alls on here wanted him gone, probably the same know alls who want Dyche gone.....like they say be careful what you wish for.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Sun Jan 09, 2022 9:58 pmAt least someone understands how good Hendrick was for us...
Though I doubt he would be able to influence a revival this season.
I always championed Hendrick and was always ridiculed, but what do I know.....nothing obviously.

It's a "bad transfer window" to have loads of money really as covid has never affected playing squads as its doing right now. Clubs are going to be so reluctant to even let fringe players go either through sale or loan as fixtures are piling up. This end to the season is going to be so congested similar to the 2020 season end - Saturday/Sunday - Tuesday/Wednesday - Saturday/ Sunday and how long are teams going to be affected with ?? % of their squad unavailable due to covid on top of suspensions and injuries.
January has always been a quiet window regardless of these current issues unless you overpay which they can afford to do of course.
Be interesting to see how they go on but they will overpay on transfers and wages (with no relegation clauses) I'm sure to attempt to get the job done.
In their eyes I would see Norwich and Burnley (the way where playing and without cornet) as certainties but they must pass at least 1 other to survive. This year's premiership could be one that not many get involved in the relegation battle.

Remember when Barry kilby took over, even under Stan we were heading for league 2, buying a couple of players lifted us!
Re: Newcastle buying power - A blessing or a curse?
I wonder if Wood found out a few weeks ago about their interest and his drop in form is designed to help out his new employer ?

Heaton Stannington. Do you know them? Currently flying high atop Northern League Division 2. Been going on for about 2 years now with increasing regularity and already made some great memories.ClaretDiver wrote: ↑Sun Jan 09, 2022 8:21 pmWhat no Pies......who is your local non league side may I ask!
Re: Newcastle buying power - A blessing or a curse?
All this alleged interest in a relegation rivals key players could easily be a bit of psychological disruption trickery aimed at having a gullible player's 'head turned'. I cannot imagine moneybags having any real interest in our players, especially considering current form.

Journalists have nothing to write about at the minute so just make stories up about Newcastle.
The public are gullible for any football gossip.
