Is that a rule or just part of the negotiations? Is it equal instalments over a fixed period?
Normally spread over 2 or 3 years depending on length of contract.

The club will have to pay well over the odds for his replacement. This has always been a difficult window in which to do good business, even worse when you are desperate. Very desperate, in our case.

If we haven't got a (better) replacement lined up it is a severe dereliction of duty by the owners and or manager. TBH the writing was on the wall with his public fallout with Dyche when he was substituted at Wolves.

That’s the signing on fee? What difference does the length of his new contact have to do with Burnley?

The positive is, whereas a week or two ago we were disgruntled at the prospect of no transfer activity this month, now we’ve got some!
And, we’ve got the enticing possibility that we may sign a replacement …

All transfers are broken down that way, never ever seems to be a transfer fee that’s paid 100% in full. That’s why there’s always pending outgoings/incomings for transfers on the accounts.

£25m for Chris Wood twelve months ago would’ve been an absolute steal. £25m for Chris Wood today is unbelievable business for us.

Cheers, Eddie!

One big final payday for Wood, what do people think he should do, go down with Burnley with a whimper or try with Newcastle who are going to buy everyone they can to stay up, whether they do or not is another story, he will have bigger paydays and bonuses for goals etc. You can't blame him.

Why would he join us? Possibility that we are swapping leagues, added to the fact he loves it at Blackburn, added to the fact they want more than 20m for him.

I’d much rather we spend the 25m on 4 players, for example.

Perhaps the owners have helped facilitate the sale by agreeing to the release clause being activated earlier because they want to see us attempt to stay up by playing football not kick and hope and I might be being naive the replacement might actually be a ball playing footballer.

The release clause was only in play from the summer, pace as done this and he's just religated us. We haven't got any striker to score 5 goals never mind enough to keep us up.

Absolutely fine with this.

Hes been a great buy overall but he's 30, presumably on big money and can't buy a goal right now. When he's not scoring, he offers very little and really contributes to making us so one dimensional.

This gives us a brilliant opportunity to freshen things up and evolve our play. Pressure is on to replace him and not with a like for like, let's hope Pace and Co have something up their sleeves.
I agree with this. Given the money on offer and his ineffectiveness this term it’s a no-brainer.

I don't, he's 30 and his body will start going downhill at some stage in the next year or so, so a good signing on fee, bonuses what's not to like about the transfer for him, for us not good.

What are the chances we go down wood can’t get a game and ends up back here on loan in the championship next season?

The ball is now in Pace's court. He has to find a more than adequate replacement. Anything less won't do, but I think he knows this.

I just don’t see how selling your main source of goals for the last four years to a relegation rival can be seen as good news. It’s basically sounding the death knell IMO.

However if we’ve suitable replacement(s) lined up I’m more than happy to eat humble pie. I just can’t see it in this January market.

I'm quite relaxed about this one if I'm honest. His reaction on being subbed at Wolves meant that the clock was ticking on him being dropped from the 1st 11. He doesn't appear to have been interested this season, something has not been right. Fair enough the service we have given him from the wings hasn't been great, but he is not been looking to get himself in the box and threaten the opposition. All good things come to an end, without his goals we would have been relegated over the course of his tenure with the club, so we have a lot to be thankful for his services. Over to you now Alan, I would like to think we have a replacement or replacements lined up to give our forward line a well overdue freshen up. If not, we are bound for the Championship in my opinion.

That’s when you have a selling club that wants to sell. If there is a release clause for £25m then unless it says “spread over 3 years” then why can’t we say we want the £25m up front otherwise the release clause isn’t met.

Think it was CT who alluded to the team not having Wood in it if Jay/Vydra didn't have Covid or were fit for selection recently.

I’ve not read the whole thread, but if the buying club triggers a clause in a players contract, that means the club and the player must be happy with the deal as that was the arrangement when the player and the club agreed on the initial terms

Dyche will have okayed this as it wasn't so long ago that Wood was subbed off just after H/T in an away game, he then tried to have a go at Dyche who then in turn (caught in camera) shouted at Wood and told him to sit down and shut up
