Liam Robinson, after our promotion it just seemed a really deflating signing and it smashed our transfer record on a player who’d seen his best days…….

Leighton James -first time
I was at Uni in the West Midlands and we sold him in 1975.I attended the Birmingham v Derby game in December that year, and he came on as sub for Derby to make his debut. It just didn’t seem right or fair

Re: Which transfer disappointed you the most
When Jimmy Mac was sold I remember my mate at school and I getting a petition together and sending it to the club, as if Bob Lord would take any notice . Funny thing is, although I clearly remember that, I can’t honestly now remember how I felt when Jimmy was sold. However, I can vividly remember many more recent ones going such as Brian O’Neil, Dobbo, but the one that really hurt was Ralph Coates.

My saddest day in 61 years of watching the Clarets was the day that the brilliant Ralph Coates left for Spurs.

Spot on Pommieclaret…Steve Kindon to Wolves for me too! Remember reading an article in the Sun newspaper that said let’s all have a good cry as Burnley sell their star players in order to survive…it was always thus!

Been thinking about these sales a bit more. Apart from Ralph I think we saw the best of many of these players before they left. I think it will be the same for Chris Wood.

Dobo was a shocker but the following March we were top of the league.
Taffy was a shocker but the way he celebrated when Derby won ont’Turf shortly after turned me off him.
Ralph was the one that hurt the most. He was a one man team at the time.

As a kid - when we were starting to struggle I'd say Tony Morley as it felt like he could have been the standout player to spearhead some kind of revival
For similar reasons Terry Cochrane
The signing of Ian Moore coupled with the fee felt very out character with the ethos of the club at the time. Might have found it easier to deal with if he ever demonstrated he was worth anything like what we supposedly paid for him

Re: Which transfer disappointed you the most
I wasn't too upset about Dobson leaving - it was what we did. However I thought it was completely unnecessary to sell Geoff Nulty too that season. That did annoy me.

I was also disappointed when Colin Waldron was given a free transfer at the age of 28. At the time of course I had no idea why.

Re: Which transfer disappointed you the most
Two young players at the time who stand out for me, where Trevor Stevens and Lee Dixon, two very good players that we let go. Further back than that, was in my opinion the brilliant Dave Thomas. Gutted when he was sold to QPR, I think.
More recently has to be Danny Ings, that goal at Ewood still gets me punching the air and lives long in my memory.

Re: Which transfer disappointed you the most
Was genuinely gutted when Arfield left as he was my favourite player (hence the nickname) - still reckon he could do a job in the Champ next year!
Trippier was disappointing, but he was going on to bigger and better things so you could justify it.

Re: Which transfer disappointed you the most
Martin Dobson for me.
I seem to recall it was a Tuesday evening match (CT could confirm this) arriving at the Turf to find out Everton had bought him for £330,000 (I think it was)
What I definitely remember is the Longside erupting at halftime with a chant of "Bob Lord's a B*****rd" ringing out and the man himself waving back at us!!

Re: Which transfer disappointed you the most
That Dave Thomas transfer seemed odd - a top player sold to a possible promotion rival - but we still won the league in imperious fashion - we didn't miss him at all.GeorgeBoydsHeadBand wrote: ↑Thu Jan 13, 2022 8:35 amTwo young players at the time who stand out for me, where Trevor Stevens and Lee Dixon, two very good players that we let go. I wonder if we will still achieve this seasons goal seeing we have just done something pretty similar?
Re: Which transfer disappointed you the most
I'm pretty sure the transfer happened late July/early August as I was lying on a beach with my girlfriend in the south of France when I looked at the back page of an English newspaper I'd just bought. I was so amazed/angry I went to a payphone to ring home to check it was true.
When I got home, I wrote a letter to Bob Lord outlining my feelings.
Surprise, surprise, I didn't get a reply.
Re: Which transfer disappointed you the most
Heaton. My favourite ever Burnley player.
Re: Which transfer disappointed you the most
Blake the first time for me. I was only around 12 when he left and had gotten his autograph on my shirt the game before as I loved him. There had already been talks about a move so I asked him (as kids do), "you're not going anywhere are you Robbie?" and he looked at me square in the face and said no. It was like a break-up at that age I was gutted when he went.
It was glorious re-signing him though even if he did leave again.

Along with all the forementioned 70s players.I will add one from the 90s Gerry Harrison I was sad to see him go to Sunderland where it never worked out for him and I seem to remember when we signed him back he rarely featured for us.Im sure I read at the time he said it was a massive mistake leaving Burnley

Re: Which transfer disappointed you the most
He played in a defeat at Ipswich on Aug24th ‘74. It broke in the Sunday papers, to my horror, and we were home to Chelsea on the Tuesday night. I believe it was a done deal by then.alf_resco wrote: ↑Thu Jan 13, 2022 3:10 pmI'm pretty sure the transfer happened late July/early August as I was lying on a beach with my girlfriend in the south of France when I looked at the back page of an English newspaper I'd just bought. I think a few of us were caught by surprise by that one, at the time. He had been been our star player and seemed to have gone into managing us seamlessly; then sadly John Ward his assistant got the Bristol City job and we all realised who had coached the side only as our form tumbled.

The biggest one for me has to be Billy Hamilton, not only a big favourite but even at the time it felt like the end of an era to me, and really signalled the coming struggles, and the start of the real rot of Burnley Football Club.

My favourite player at the time but it just occurred to me, why all the scornful references to him being sold to pay for a stand? Seems like a good investment all these years later.evensteadiereddie wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 7:24 pmRalph Coates - there'd been denial after denial but my dad, bless him, did his best to prepare me for the inevitable. Martin Dobson being sold to Everton to pay for a stand wasn't far behind.
