Re: Chris Wood move confirmed
I'm a big fan of Chris Wood but I do think that is a good fee considering he's 30. On the other hand, he's a proven goal scorer in the Premier League and his exit weakens us when we're already in a tough spot. I'll be honest, I'm not as into football as I was so I'm pretty apathetic about the whole thing. I'm a little disappointed he's jumped ship at this moment but also understand why it could be an attractive move for him. Oh well.

The release clause wasn’t effective until summer.

I agree. If we go down I think we'll finish halfway, at best.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jan 13, 2022 10:16 amMore so if some people think the championship will be a cakewalk it could be a long way back bigger clubs than us in more favourable financial circumstances are testament to that.

Re: Chris Wood move confirmed
At some point he’s going to have to put players straight in. What’s happening isn’t working and he doesn’t have the luxury of bedding them in for a month or so.summitclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jan 13, 2022 10:10 amEven if we were to bring in the players we all know we have needed for some while, does anyone think SD would actually just chuck them all into the team immediately? He has never done it before.
Anyway, if we lose the 2 home games in the next week, it will be more or less curtains. To choose, as it appears we have, to sell our only centre forward that scores immediately before these next 2 home games to a relegation rival, will probably be discussed for decades as the time when our journey in the top flight was ended voluntarily, to enable Garlick and crew to get their money.
And it seems quite clear now that there was no choice in it. If a clause in his contract has been activated then that’s it, our influence over the matter becomes minimal. Most news sources seem to imply the club very much didn’t want to sell to Newcastle.

Thanks to Chris Wood for his service, he has been very effective for us.
I hope the wretched form he has suffered this year continues until May and that he witnesses Burnley survive at Turf Moor on the last day of the season.
Beyond that, I wish him well.

Re: Chris Wood move confirmed
Bye bye Chris, hope you enjoy the money when you're sat on the Newcastle bench next season.
Not unduly bothered by him going, and for that amount it's a good deal for us.
And why so many are wishing him well baffles me, he's wanted out for a year or so, hardly the type we want in the midst of a relegation battle.
However the timing could have been better for us, given Barnes & Vydra are side-lined, meaning Jay's our only fit recognised striker.
Now it's all down to what we do with the money, CM and a forward absolute priority on my shopping list.

What are the odds on his replacement being signed in time for the Leicester game?
If the answer is none, does that mean Jay upfront on his own?

Good luck to the lad. Met him a couple of times and he’s such a genuine, nice bloke to be honest.
All is fair in love and war as they say. I doubt there’s a person in the country who wouldn’t have taken the chance to massively increase their earnings at the twilight end of a career.
All the best in the Championship with Newcastle next season Woody!!!

I'm not even sure if we've got any fit youngsters that can make the bench, Joe McGlynn perhaps who was on the bench for the Huddersfield game, but any of the youngsters who might have got a shot are sadly injured.

Very small chance, even just with tripps and Wood through the door, that Newcastle go down. He's had a rough patch of form with us but he's a natural goalscorer. Not angry or upset about it, but looks like we're down.Andreshotboots wrote: ↑Thu Jan 13, 2022 10:57 amGood luck to the lad. So, if we're chasing the game against Leicester (and let's face it, there's more than a good chance we will be) and we need an extra striker to partner Jay, there is literally nothing we can do?tiger76 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 13, 2022 10:58 amI'll be if we get anyone in before the Leicester game, so I guess Jay ploughs a lone furrow.

Well that's up to SD to come up with a solution, and just for once he might have to think outside the box.fidelcastro wrote: ↑Thu Jan 13, 2022 11:02 amSo, if we're chasing the game against Leicester (and let's face it, there's more than a good chance we will be) and we need an extra striker to partner Jay, there is literally nothing we can do?

And let's face it blindly persisting with the tried and trusted 4-4-2 has hardly reaped dividends this season has it.
It is what it is, and we'll just have to cope as best we can.

This is the player who just one week before his move became public knowledge, was telling the press what a wonderful camaraderie there was in the Burnley dressing room. Everyone singing from the same hymn sheet. All in it together, etc. etc..
Glad he's gone. This could change our season and maybe also condem Newcastle to the drop.

Nothing like on the scale of Coyle's departure but let's try and not make the same mistake of sitting around crying about it and throwing the towel in. Forget about Wood, go and sign a couple of players who at least give us a bit of hope we're going to try and stay up. And not Leon Cort this time.

Yes, of course, but how many teams chase the game effectively by playing one striker?tiger76 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 13, 2022 11:08 amWell that's up to SD to come up with a solution, and just for once he might have to think outside the box.

All I can think is that Lennon or McNeil play just off Jay, either from the start or later in the game if needs be.

Re: Chris Wood move confirmed
I read that the cornet deal was 15 million spread over 5 years, 20 million upfront gives you a 100 million kitty if you handle it in the same way.
I'm not saying that's what's going to happen but long contracts and bigger fees have just become more realistic. They need to be an investment though so I'd expect all our targets to be under 25 rather than the Defoes and Kieffer Moores that some people expect us to go for.

Re: Chris Wood move confirmed
£20 million up front gives us a very good chance to rebuild the squad with younger talent which will become investments as well as giving us a strong chance of escaping the championship at the first opportunity. If we convince MC to stay, along with a couple of good signings, this could be a positive step for either staying up this year, or getting back up.

He's literally just signed with them...he could still come out with a statement in the next day or two. Also, where has it actually been quoted that he's been after a move for the past year (other than Twitter rumours)

The quote from Eddie Howe that made a story on the BBC Football website this week made me laugh headlined "We don't have a blank Cheque".
I hope not so long as £20 million is written on it.

How is Newcastle signing our best striker going to condemn them to the drop and help us, given it's mid January and a time notoriously difficult for getting in players. we got 20 million up front we we're never gonna turn that down And 25 million in total, making this deal the biggest ever between two Premier league teams for a player 30 year old and above, and unbelievably this deal is the 6th highest ever transfer in world football history for a player of 30+.........Pants down Newcastle.

Re: Chris Wood move confirmed
A lot has been made over Wood saying he was in his comfort zone, but to be fair, the whole club has been for some time now.
Injury or suspension aside the team doesn't change. Most have been playing with the same players for years now so it's reasonable that players could easily be in their comfort zone.
I think as fans we've been in our comfort zone too. Initially, selling Wood sounds unthinkable because of what he's done in the past, but if it brings about change and freshens up the group then it's worth it. If we'd signed a 30yr old who'd scored 3 goals this season for £25m everyone would be going mental!
Looking forward to seeing what happens the rest of the window, and season!

Re: Chris Wood move confirmed
it's not pants down Newcastle if his goals help them stay up. 25 million is peanuts if you're relegated. I get that in normal circumstances, 25 million for Wood at his age and with our current rut, is a decent deal. But this isn't summer pre-season - we're in January selling our best goalscorer to a direct relegation rival. It's a big blow I think, but I hope you're all right!

Having provided Wood with loads of chances that he's missed, perhaps the rest of the players will now feel more confident that their efforts might now been rewarded.

good financial business for an ageing player, however will the £25million line the pockets of Pace or buy SD a new pair of Italian shoes or do we replace him to aide or survival chances ?

Was a great addition during his time and thankful for the memories of his goals but I'm not wishing him luck for the rest of this season - and to those who are, bear in mind that EVERY goal he scores from now will only be a detriment to our survival hopes.
Of course he would leave when these circumstances are offered, anyone would - but can we not act like we want him to do well this season lol, 'except against us', every match he will play is indirectly against us

A good bit in that article made me smile a little
"If one of Wood’s key roles will be to polish off crosses – often from Trippier – his ability to hold up the ball, press from the front and bully defenders into submission can only strengthen a Newcastle side who have scored a modest 19 goals."
He doesn't do much pressing or bullying deffenders that's for sure.
Who is he shushing in the picture also

He's more than capable of scoring 7+ goals, why is it cloud cuckoo land given his record. I would not be the least suprised to see him score that many for Newcastle. And the whole team has been woeful and low on confidence not just Wood. I hope we get a better replacement in now l, I just very much doubt it. He's in a bad run of form like any striker can have, he hasn't suddenly morphed into a sh*t striker.Gordaleman wrote: ↑Thu Jan 13, 2022 1:17 pmSo you think that Wood would score between 7 and 12 goals between now and the end of the season? Newcastle fans when he’s missed a sitter or been caught offside (again)
Re: Chris Wood move confirmed
Sorry if this has been raised already - I think it must have been but not had time to read everything - but I wonder how long the club have known about the Saudis wanting him. Gone are the days when clubs contacted each other first prior to players (and agents or rather agents and then players) but I would hope we've known or suspected for a while. For obvious reasons.

Re: Chris Wood move confirmed
Anyone actually looked at how many games his goals contributed to our result.
I think the standard way of expressing a strikers success is by the goals to game ratio.
However if you are the main supply of goals for the team, if he scored more than one goal in a game clearly the reality of his contribution wasn’t 1 in 3 but perhaps he would Score ‘at least 1’ in every 5 games (or whatever it may be).
This will tell you that Wood wasn’t necessarily as prolific as people first imagine if they are looking at the 1 in 3 stat and if he did stay - his contribution was likely to be minimal in our team.

I bet he's made a miraculous recovery from the groin strain he had against Huddersfield.
