I wish they would stop making these constant changes as its ruining the game. I used to prefer the highway code back in the 80's when driving cars was a proper mans sport

Re: New changes to Highway Code
Only psychopaths or idiots weren't giving way in this manner to start with. Nice to formalize this kind of politeness that can only encourage drivers to think more about pedestrians.
Good to see a return to form for DA after a very lean period too.

I drive a BMW, therefore I have right of way in any situation.
I hope that's understood.

Re: New changes to Highway Code
I always give way to people on side roads to cross
As for wankers on horses and bikes (I ride a bike) the first rule of your own personal highway code is your responsibility to yourself. If you go riding bikes or horses on fast, blind dangerous roads, quite frankly you deserve everything you get.
Or do you wanna be having an argument with baby jesus in heaven about who was right or wrong with the code?

Having to give way to pedestrians waiting to cross the road as you turn into a junction is going to result in traffic jams and accidents, especially in busy areas.

If a horse kicks your car for example, the insurance will automatically assume it's the fault of the car driver for being so close to the horse.

This is the main one for me. It’s going to confuse a lot of people and cause a lot of problems.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 10:56 pmHaving to give way to pedestrians waiting to cross the road as you turn into a junction is going to result in traffic jams and accidents, especially in busy areas.

Are you actually saying that a cyclist deserves to die for cycling on a main road?tarkys_ears wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 10:52 pmI always give way to people on side roads to cross

As for the Highway Code changes, I’ll keep doing the same as I do on my bike (when I get back on it after recovering for the acl reconstruction I had last week due to being smashed off my bike by a crap driver).

Baby Jesus isn’t in heaven because Jesus died when he was of adult age.tarkys_ears wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 10:52 pmI always give way to people on side roads to cross

That's the only one that's really new, isn't it? stopping for pedestrians on a zebra crossing was certainly in force when I took my test, and that's all but 40 years ago. They may have tweaked the wording but the meaning's the same.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 10:56 pmHaving to give way to pedestrians waiting to cross the road as you turn into a junction is going to result in traffic jams and accidents, especially in busy areas.
I really don't like the idea of stopping on a busy main road to save a pedestrian on the side road pavement a couple of seconds. Nor do I like even the hint of the idea for pedestrians that they have right of way and have less need to look out for traffic. It can only make life harder for drivers.
Though at least car drivers' responsibilities are less now. In the previous version, everyone had an absolute duty to drive as safely and responsibly as pssible, as I understood it. That's no longer true. Lorry drivers have the greatest responsibility to drive safely, so by logical extension I can be a bit less responsible. Hmm. I'll pass. I'll continue being as responsible as I know how.

Cars have the right of way on the roads, pandestians have the right of way on the pavements, stick to your own and stay off the other's

Re: New changes to Highway Code
Cyclists using pavements and expecting walkers to move out the way can be thrown off their bike is a good introduction

Re: New changes to Highway Code
Pedestrians currently have right of way but drivers don’t have to stop to let them cross. I can see the reasoning behind this as I will often cross a side road adjacent to a main road and cars will indicate late, or not at all, and turn into the side road as I’m crossing, having to give way but leading to a more dangerous situation.
Don’t really see an issue with this, it will also make drivers slow down at junctions.

Re: New changes to Highway Code
I don’t think much will change, amongst people that have been driving for years the habits are well ingrained & I reckon faced with a theory test lots would fail, it mostly applies to build up urban areas where pedestrians are likely to be about & occasionally in numbers, the new drivers coming through are more likely to adapt & embrace the new changes, unless pedestrian crossings or recognised walkways are visible it’s unlikely to be attempted anyway.

'Drivers should give way to pedestrians waiting to cross a zebra crossing' - I thought that was already the rule?

Re: New changes to Highway Code
Some people don’t know or acquaint themselves with the Highway Code, you just drive & it works it’s when you have an accident it then becomes a problem it’s often a bridge that’s crossed later on.

Re: New changes to Highway Code
Going to be a lot of accidents. Everyone is going to need a yearly Highway Code retest. Nightmare for learner drivers, they’ll never get round a corner.

A long time ago when I did what was called an advanced driving test, I was told that there is no "right of way" just an instruction that you should give way in certain circumstances.

Bad news, going to make adding to my squashed cyclist badges harder but good news that squashed pedestrian badges will be easier to come by.

Re: New changes to Highway Code
Giving way to traffic from your right causes issues when driving in Nelson and people stopping dead to let people out of their drive ,despite the speed of the traffic, is another interesting quirk of driving in Colne.
As I spend my days commuting on the M3/4 I find this practice infuriating. Which goes to show the Code maybe should be regionalisatised to allow these customs to be catered for.
