14 peaks on Netflix

Post by Jel » Fri Jan 21, 2022 11:55 am

Just watched this last night.
Amazing story of an ex Gurkha and British special forces soldier, Nim Purja.
His attempt is to summit 14 peaks above 8000 metres, all in a 7 month period.

Watched it a few months ago, it is truly incredible what he did, and he takes it all so matter of fact.

Had the pleasure of serving with the Gurkhas. Fantastic soldiers, very brave and humble men.

Sir Ralph Turner once said of the Gurkhas, “Bravest of the brave, most generous of the generous, never had country more faithful friends than you”.

I only spent 9 months with them, my loss.

I have started this program and I’ll finish it shortly, but whatever happens in it, I will never be surprised at what a Gurkha can or will achieve.

Watched it last week. Incredible that he isn’t famous. Getting the climbers drunk on K2 was a proper military thing to do. Tonight we drink, tomorrow we plan. Brilliant!

I too served with the Gurkhas back in the day. Truly great soldiers and people. Nims also did the first Winter summit of K2 this time last year. Proper inspirational stuff.

That was pretty much the point that was made in the series. Had he been a western mountaineer, he’d have been far more well known than he is.

Hillary was lauded, Tenzing Norgay much less so. The western mountaineers would be nothing without the support of the Sherpas.

There’s another series or film, possibly called Everest, which follows Sherpas and mountaineers during a particularly bad season, in which there were lots of fatalities on Everest. It really highlighted how under appreciated a lot of Sherpas feel, to the point of some real hospitalities developing.

These guys are the ones that lay the ropes and ladder bridges in order for the westerners to be able to achieve their goals.

As a serving soldier, what a massive over reaction. Perhaps FYB is more your level?
