Football arrests on an upward trend
Report from BBC. Pray we don’t go back to the 70s & 80s.

Re: Football arrests on an upward trend
It’s getting worse in the UK but nothing like some of the other European countries, we’ve loads of cctv in and around our grounds so it will not be long before it’s catches up with them. A lot of us have been young, stupid & drunk showing off with our mates at the football, it’s those in their 50’s still doing it that crack me up

I attended a meeting this week on this very subject and some clubs are now becoming more alert to it and taking severe action. It's becoming a real concern.

Rising food costs, soaring energy bills, Irish troubles, higher interest rates, low wages - its back to the 70s/80s babey!
Re: Football arrests on an upward trend
The sooner the stupid amongst us are banned from attending the better, in years gone by lack of action has just served to make it more acceptable to act in a violent manner.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri Jan 21, 2022 6:11 pmI attended a meeting this week on this very subject and some clubs are now becoming more alert to it and taking severe action. You can see it at every match where certain ‘fans’ spend all 90 mins goading the opposition’s ‘fans’ without even gazing towards the pitch to watch the game.
And what is the compulsion some people feel to encroach onto the field of play, moronic!.

To the above add anyone under 35 won't remember the disasters of the 80's and what things were like before then.
Add recreational drugs to the mix and things escalate very quickly these days, not just at football matches.

Re: Football arrests on an upward trend
It has struck me this season how much it’s creeping back into the game. Saw more trouble in two home games at the start of the season than I can remember seeing for a long time.
Re: Football arrests on an upward trend
As a 18/19 year old in the late 70s I think it's a long, long way from those days.
Many home games it was kicking off at the crossroads outside the Welly.
Away games, especially in the lower leagues when we were a big scalp and every thug it seemed turned out to our games.
Don't feel at all threatened today as we were back then.

I remember Thatcher saying 'If they act like animals, I'll treat them like animals'.
And then the cages went up.

I don’t think it’s especially dangerous for your average supporter, but there seems to be more morons looking for trouble than there has been for a long time.

I’ve not read the link, but I suspect they are more arrests for offensive language, chanting with swearing in and calling someone a woofter these days.
Re: Football arrests on an upward trend
After no footy for 18 months and various lockdowns I don't think it's any surprise there's a lot of young lads with a bit of excess testosterone knocking around.
Re: Football arrests on an upward trend
Ah, ok that’s alright then. Let’s go and knock seven bells out of people who happen to support a team that we don’t. Bless ‘em

it's a colossal problem all across Europe. Spain, Greece and Holland are bad, France is horrendous. Weapons are seemingly common place nowadays. It does need sorting out

When I was a lad, it was rock stars and George best walloping Columbia’s finest… now almost EVERYONE you come across on match day has been on the nose beer. They are absolute sad acts and I can’t stand to be around them.

Re: Football arrests on an upward trend
“Football related arrests” it says in the article. I would love to see a breakdown of what for, and where the arrests where made before making an accurate judgement.
I think one of the reasons for the potential rise with us is possibly cost cutting. The early games there were very few Police about and if that’s replicated in and around stadia throughout the country, then the loonies will feel a little braver.
As has been posted above though, even if they’re rising it’s a million miles away from what it used to be like.

If you ever watch any football hooligan videos then not much happens. Plenty of street dancing.Andreshotboots wrote: ↑Sat Jan 22, 2022 8:40 am“Football related arrests” it says in the article. You could argue football games have been the biggest waste of police resources for the last 20 years. Especially how stretched they are.

Re: Football arrests on an upward trend
We seem to have our fair share of drunken or ‘coked’ up idiots at away games who do spend a fair majority of the game gesticulating at the home fans and being down on the concourse having another beer or a sniff in the toilets. They can make a day at the football most unpleasant if you are unfortunate to be seated or should I say stood up anywhere near them.jos wrote: ↑Fri Jan 21, 2022 6:26 pmThe sooner the stupid amongst us are banned from attending the better, in years gone by lack of action has just served to make it more acceptable to act in a violent manner.

Re: Football arrests on an upward trend
My dad and his mates were both home and away fans, but they gave up bothering with away games a couple of seasons ago. Basically, spending good money and time to be surrounded by coked-up morons for a couple of hours. They can do that on their own doorstep, just by going into the town centre on a Saturday night.
