The importance of Maxwel Cornet

Post by RVclaret » Sat Jan 22, 2022 8:15 am

I think we all recognise we've been a much better team with Maxwel Cornet in the team than not but what do the stats show? Just how important is he to our survival chances?

With Cornet v Without Cornet

Starts: 7 v 10
Goals: 12 v 4
Points: 8 v 3
Goals per Game: 1.7 v 0.4
Points per Game: 1.1 v 0.3

The contrast is quite significant.

Extrapolating the ppg with Cornet starting across our remaining games, not including tomorrow's as he's still away, we'd end the season with 33. That would likely be just about enough to stay up this season and makes his consistent availability increasingly important.

Unfortunately due to adapting to a new league, intensity and style of play he's picked up a few minor muscle strains but his time at Lyon suggests he was anything but injury prone, so lets hope that the injuries are behind him.

Of course we don't want to be solely reliant on just one player and that's why IF Pace, Dyche and co can deliver another few Cornet calibre players (like some of the names we've been linked with lately, Champions League pedigree, and including a striker) over the next 10 days, I'll be feeling rather confident we can do this.

If we don’t sell him first
Pleased that the Ivory Coast haven’t put him on display
Strange that Lyon pegged him back at left back
He’s got that in common with us
No one likes him
But we love him
Come home soon Maxwell

Time for the other players to step up because there's no way Cornet can be expected to maintain his form

Marooned on a volcanic island with fierce indigenous tribes and prehistoric creatures thrown in for good measure?

Let's hope Turf Moor is always Maxwell's House.

No, it’s Oscar Wilde.

Come back and don’t get injured please. Also would be good for us to have him for Watford but if he’s in the final it would be great for him and we’ll beat Watford anyway after our many good signings.

Even if he does maintain his form he can't do it all on his own, and yes others will need to chip in.

We've scored 16 PL goals this season, and 9 of those are by Cornet & Wood.

I knew he was important to us, but those stats just highlight how important it is he maintains his form and fitness for the rest of the season.

Either way, we have to get behind Egypt on Wednesday. Come on Egypt. Whoever thought I’d be coming out with something like that? Do they have any other notable players apart from Salah?

Didn't Maxwell say on a couple of occasions that he enjoyed playing alongside Wood because he could feed off him.

As well as getting MC back here, we need a striker and a midfielder too before the end of January, or we're screwed.

How likely that is remains to be seen.

He did when asked about the partnership in interviews. Realistically, I never saw them as a real partnership as Wood was so dire this season and hardly ever linked up with him (barring Brentford).
