I don't recall a bad miss at all at Leeds but I do recall Meslier making an excellent save to deny him on the volley and then firing just over with a first time shot from around the edge of the box. Neither were early in the game either. One was at 0-0 but the other at 0-1.

I'll admit he's not been playing quite as well this season but he's not the only player. McNeil (0 goal, 0 assists), midfield without a single goal between them and Pope has been responsible for a number of goals this season which has not been the case in previous seasons.

Quite honestly, I think the vitriol aimed at Wood is downright pathetic.

And I would agree with that, it serves no purpose.
Perhaps my expectations of a PL striker exceed what CW has done this season.

Wood is the scapegoat even after he is no longer a Burnley player.

My own opinion is that although Chris Wood has been excellent for us, he’s been beyond useless this season (amongst others) and that £20m+ represents an excellent return for us.

His best days are behind him.

He's the best we've had, and by some distance.

Just watching MOTD, he could of had 3 today- just couldn’t be bothered to attack the ball. Confidence is really shot.

My memory will fail me here but when we sold Paul Barnes it seemed like league suicide, let’s hope The Wood replacement is as good as the Barnes replacement.

Charlie only played in the Championship for us but he did have an exceptional season for QPR in the Premier League.

Expected goals stands at 5.9? That's marvellous if I actually knew what it meant.

Not watched it yet but I think all strikers suffer from shot confidence when they are having a run like this, but we know Wood comes out of these runs.

To be fair Tony, he cut and run to a key relegation rival within 24 hours of a bid and then said he was in his “comfort zone” here after playing poorly all season. Yes, others have too, but his effort was nowhere near previous seasons - no running the channels, very half-hearted pressing, etc.

I commend him for his ~50 goals here and going about his business very professionally. In that respect any new signings would have very big boots to fill. He also then secured us £27m which is a huge for a 30 year old and in my opinion, coupled with his scoring record, makes him one of our best signings ever. But I also can’t wish him well at Newcastle.

The interview he did was for his new club so I'll take the 'comfort zone' comment with a pinch of salt. I don't think you can question his effort just because he wasn't playing as well but, yes, he was quick to get to Newcastle although we don't and never will know all the details. I'm sure some at Turf Moor will have been rubbing their hands at the prospect of that money coming in.

He was a terrific signing for us and I was quick to change my views because I wasn't so sure when we signed him. I prefer to remember all the good things he did at Burnley and, right now, our squad is a hell of a lot weaker for him having gone.

I reckon Charlie Austin would have done well...for a season at least. A natural striker.
But, as you rightly point out, we sold him before he had a chance with us in the PL
The expected goals? Analysis of the quality of chance either scored or missed.
I'm guessing that a few of our players are down on their "expected" standards, which is why we've only won one game this season.

We certainly need to replace him before January's out, or we'll be relegated.

Tony, stop with the hidden inferences about the owners. Either say what you think or what you know or leave it be.

I liked him, and though its stating the obvious, he was playing in a poor team here on current form, and couldn't be expected to conjure goals out of nothing.
Now he has gone to similarly poor team and has only had two games. Hardly a basis to write the bloke off.
He will score for them soon enough.

No inference at all, but getting that sort of money for him would surely be good news for those responsible for the finance and give us more options in the window.

Completely off topic, but Austin was the best complete striker I’ve watched for Burnley. Absolutely awesome.

He was very much a natural finisher and I put him in the top four I've seen at Burnley in those terms alongside Willie Irvine, Kurt Nogan and Andy Payton. What was weird though was that results were better when he was out of the side than in, which probably suggests we played to him too much.

But no criticism of Austin for me. Every time he stepped up a level he carried on scoring - always thought he should have got an opportunity with England when he was at his best around 2015.

Give over, you know exactly what you’re doing with comments like that. You need to realise some folk on here hang on your every word. If you mean it may give us more to spend day that.

Good shout Tony, Payton and Nogan I really rated, there was something about Austin for me that edged it. A 2015 Austin in our team now - we would be sitting nicely around the top ten.

Austin is the best out and out striker I've seen play for us. Nobody attacked the ball as well as him.

I dont really see vitriol. I see fans that can take the claret specs off and see that 25-27m for someone who wasnt contributing enough, whilst at 30 years of age is good business.

What he’s done previously doesnt come into that.

You may have formulated an overall opinion on the player - but thats your view.

Cold hard facts:
30, floundering, 25-27m. (Going off whats been reported)

= good business.

Lets not forget. This could be win win.
CW gets a decent retirement fund,
We get to re-invest.

Leave your opinion of CW at the door. Its no longer needed
