Shame. The Savoy was replaced with this which I can only imagine was designed on a piece of grid paper

I can remember the Savoy building but don't think I ever went in. Shocking when you see what replaced it.

Yes - if you look to the right of the Savoy pic you can see a flag which is flying from the HSBC.

Re: Two old pictures of Burnley
I remember going in the Savoy cafe with my mum and my grandmother when I was about 6 or 7 years old, which would have been circa 1953. My mum and I had met Grandma Maude to do some shopping and Grandma (who had her own shop and was well off by our standards) decided to go for afternoon tea there. I only remember there were white table cloths on all the tables and cups with saucers, plus shiny, metallic cutlery. It’s strange how little things like that stay in your memory after nearly 70 years.

Re: Two old pictures of Burnley
The old Magistrates Court building in Keswick is now a Wetherspoons. They have retained many of the court's old features, including the magistrate's bench and the dock.
I've dealt with many a case there when it was a court, but I've not been in the pub yet.
It has the rather unwieldy name of " The Chief Justice Of The Common Pleas ".

Re: Two old pictures of Burnley
Wetherspoons in Surbiton is in an old theatre and it still looks remarkably authentic. Worth a visit just to look at the Edwardian plasterwork and deco.
(and also for Oakham Citra at £1.99 a pint obv)

Dear me, thats criminal pulling down such a building as the Savoy and they call it progress. It looked wonderful inside and out.
Re: Two old pictures of Burnley
Wetherspoons in Llandudno is an old theatre where the Beatles have played in the past. Fair play to them they do an excellent job of tastefully renovating old buildings.

Re: Two old pictures of Burnley
Savoy closed in 1956 so I’d have been just four at the time. I can definitely remember the building though and not sure when it was knocked down to make way for that dreadful Martins Bank building.
