I don't think many people were playing football in Burnley outside of Turf Moor this eveningJakubclaret wrote: ↑Sat Feb 05, 2022 10:55 pmI’m in Burnley that’s all I said, the rest of Burnley outside turf moor does it stop raining & does the wind stop?

People were still experiencing adverse weather conditions, pizzas & kebabs & curries still got delivered for longer than 90mins the world didn’t stop in the northwest. It’s been a sh1t night for everybody on the weather front but you just get on with it.

What’s more drivel is the kop out excuses blaming things on some rain & wind, FA cup ties have been played today in bad weather conditions & decent performances have occurred it’s not in isolation on to turf moor.
Re: Wout Weghorst
Which games and decent performances did you watch with your punctual pizza delivery that were comparable with the deteriorating conditions in Burnley from about 5pm?Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Sat Feb 05, 2022 11:06 pmWhat’s more drivel is the kop out excuses blaming things on some rain & wind, FA cup ties have been played today in bad weather conditions & decent performances have occurred it’s inot in isolation to turf moor.

Enough, let’s just say if he was crap or good & leave the weather out of it, if he’s that affected by the bad weather it’s not very hopeful going forwards in the British climate, it’s rainy & windy I think sometimes in Germany so he’s not left a tropical country & arrived here.

My German friend said he would score goals if he gets the service. Unfortunately he got no service today. Had a couple of half chances....

Wout Weghorst is a poor mans Chris Wood. Think about it.
Re: Wout Weghorst
Poor debut but the circumstances (weather, poor service, short turnaround after arrival on Monday etc) were against him somewhat.
Still, I wish we'd bought a different type of striker in. Not my cup of tea at all.

Re: Wout Weghorst
We bought what our budget would allow us to buy, and there lies the problem.
Re: Wout Weghorst
very hard to judge him on tonight for various reasons. Didn't help with the entire midfield misplacing passes all game. How many decent crosses did we put in?

Re: Wout Weghorst
Think he was a bit taken aback by the intensity of things at times - notable occasion where he had the chance to get his shot away but wanted too much time - but I thought he showed a few decent touches, not least the one that got him in on goal in the second half. Inauspicious debut but I think there’s more to come and, despite what the messageboard’s resident crank thinks, the atrocious conditions were hardly helpful.

Looked like a poor man's Gareth Taylor. Should come good once he settles. Not helped by weather and service. Will probably tear up the Championship next season.

well WW had one more chance than I did and I'm sat on the couch on the other side of the world - the chance he had he created for himself. We could have a prime Didier Drogba up front and he wouldn't look any better. Strikers wont look good unless you give them chances

Re: Wout Weghorst
How anyone can judge or comment on his first game in conditions like that is beyond me. At times the corner flags were bent over touching the pitch, the rubbish the wind had blown from the stand was swirling around in all directions. At on point Ben Mee played a ball wide to Pieters and it was traveling at normal pace to then blast across the pitch as if someone was curling it in the to corner.

Impossible to judge. Appalling conditions and the service to him was even worse! The odd decent touch and kept going but difficult to say anything else

Hard to judge in truly horrendous conditions , debut in prem , poor service , hardly kicked a ball with teammates etc . I think he’ll come good but gawd almighty he’s slow

Re: Wout Weghorst
Have to be honest was a tad disappointed as he looked easily brushed off the ball and moved like Bamford ….kind of loping backwards. I think he will have a good touch and distribution but he isn’t what I was expecting which was more of a handful for defenders. I agree too early to make an assessment but just my view so far
Re: Wout Weghorst
Looked terrible today, but the scariest thing was he wasn't even close to being the worst player.

Everyone blaming the weather, service, first game, tactics etc etc.
I remember Ian Wrights first game for us, he didn't have a good game but clearly looked a different class to those around him. I didn't get that impression with Wout.

So a player who played at the top, top, top level for his entire career looked a different class in all those around him in League One (or was it still Div three then?)
That isn't a fair comparison is it?

I like him. Think there is a lot of potential once he gets upto speed. He admitted in his interview he was a bit taken aback by the physicality and intensity, but he seems to have a very grounded view on things.
I think we have picked up a bargain with this guy, once he gels in and gets into it, I think he will do well. Clearly he can use both his head and his feet.

Re: Wout Weghorst
Possibly not the fairest comparison, so I will change it to Dwights debut. He showed touches of class and the promise of more to come at the time. Again, I didn't see that with Wout.Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Sun Feb 06, 2022 10:09 amRight

Re: Wout Weghorst
Think this is fair. An awful game to judge him on though and needs to find his feet but I was expecting more of a handful too. I think he’ll need service ( which is the problem). His flick ons will look better in better conditions. Think he needs to play with another striker and Cornet needs to be on wing. We need much better delivery into the box too. Pieters could have done better with this last night but again the wind played its part.BillyIngham'sShorts wrote: ↑Sun Feb 06, 2022 8:57 amHave to be honest was a tad disappointed as he looked easily brushed off the ball and moved like Bamford ….kind of loping backwards. Re: Wout Weghorst
Love the ‘jury’s out’ comments.
Bundesliga experts who have watched him week in week out have been pretty much unanimously praised him and suggested he is a great signing for us.
Yet we’ve people here after one game in possibly the worst conditions we’ve played in years, making statements like ‘not a patch on wood’.
He’s maybe had 2 or 3 training sessions with a new team and played one game in horrendous conditions. It’s borderline insanity to try and forge any real opinion on him as a player after that game.

Chris Wood did both of those things and he was slower than a week in jail.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 05, 2022 9:03 pmStrange one.
Showed some good touches at times but i can’t see how a striker that slow can make an impact. Might improve with better service at some point
Far too early to be judging a new player who only had one game under his belt.
This final comment is aimed really at the post, not anyone in particular. The Collins English dictionary definition of “knee jerk” reads “see up the clarets”

It does but it doesn’t just affect the 11 in claret & renders 11 yellow jerseys immune from poor weather. It’s the same for everybody, the Watford defenders weren’t at their best also but managed to contain our rare threats.Darnhill Claret wrote: ↑Sun Feb 06, 2022 10:17 amWell if you think horrendous weather conditions don’t affect players and their performances negatively, surprise but I think you might be in the minority.

Re: Wout Weghorst
I don't think the question is whether Weghorst is any good or not - the question is whether he can fit into the 4-4-2 as well as Wood. I agree with those aboive who say he looks more like a Peter Crouch type player than a Wood or Barnes.
The problem is whether we have enough possession and delivery into the box to allow him to operate.

Re: Wout Weghorst
We weren’t comparing Wout to any other players though were we? As someone said he was some way off being the worst player. Give the guy a few games to settle in before hanging him out to dry. Maxwel wasn’t very effective either but he’s probably accepted as our best technical player and Dwight played like he’d never played in the rain before.
Re: Wout Weghorst
He was fine. Clearly a good footballer, much better at linking the play than Wood, but until we get technically better we players around him who can give him the service he requires (into his chest/feet rather than 20ft in the air) then he will not score goals.
He is clearly not a traditional target man (like Crouch) and heading isn’t his strength. There were a few moments where he showed some nice interplay with Cornet and McNeil but we didn’t get the ball to him in the areas he will thrive.
