Prediction “Supercomputers”
These “supercomputers” are always predicting the final league table to help online websites create articles.
Has anyone (especially any journalists) ever seen one of these computers?
How big are they?
Are the sentient?
Do they utilise quantum mechanics to make these predictions?
Do they have lots of whirring dials, flashing lights and tapes reels like in 1970s Dr Who?
What are they used for when they aren’t generating football league tables for online tabloid/clickbait websites?- are they some kind of top secret military innovation?
We all know how quickly computers have improved over the years so maybe in the not too distant future there’ll be no need to play football matches at all? Today’s “supercomputer” is tomorrow’s laptop. We’ll be able to simply input the variables into the “supercomputer”/laptop and generate fair results without any risk of injury to the players whatsoever.

Re: Prediction “Supercomputers”
Good evening Bosscat and welcome to another of my threads.
Welcome one, welcome all.
I’ve been awake and travelling since 5:45am and a supercomputer has apparently predicted where we’ll finish at the end of the season.
Sadly for me, I made a rule never to click on anything published by the remnants of the Burnley express or LET many years ago so, constrained by my own rules, I’m not allowed to see this super prediction.
I’m just wondering if anyone at the LET has seen this supercomputer in action?
I don’t want to sound cynical but what if it’s all made up or -worse still!- just a regular computer’s prediction?

Re: Prediction “Supercomputers”
If it’s ORAC I’ll take it at face value.
That little Perspex wonder box foresaw the destruction of the liberator when everybody else thought the set was there to stay.

It's all a big con, there is no supercomputer, it's just some bloke messing about with one of these:

Re: Prediction “Supercomputers”
Forget computers.
Me and Spot have had our abaci out and it is going to be very close.
Norwich and Watford are toast.
We will get 36 points, one point above one of Newcastle, Everton, Leeds, or Brentford.

At the risk of taking this thread far more seriously than it's intended to be, here's a link to the predictions that doesn't involve clicking on rubbish local newpaper websites.Rowls wrote: ↑Mon Feb 21, 2022 9:42 pmGood evening Bosscat and welcome to another of my threads.

Unfortunately, as promising as it if for us, your link has all the hallmarks of being a prediction put together by standard computers. It actually credits authors and shows its working out.
This thread is really only concerned with supercomputers.
Think HAL from Space Odyssey. Supercomputers with soft voices and temperamental personalities. That kind of thing (or whatever the LET have got working in their back rooms).

On a side note, this regular prediction bears striking similarities to Spot and Ralphie’s premonitionary abacus work.Tall Paul wrote: ↑Mon Feb 21, 2022 10:34 pmAt the risk of taking this thread far more seriously than it's intended to be, here's a link to the predictions that doesn't involve clicking on rubbish local newpaper websites.

Re: Prediction “Supercomputers”
If you take a server from a company like Oracle Sun or IBM they tend to go up to around 200 cores. Most of these have 8 CPU threads per core so they're equivalent to around 1600 cores and can get up to around 16TB of memory. When you need more processing power you need to start clustering those big servers together or clustering huge numbers of x86 blades and then you're getting into the realms of the super computer.
The Met Office have a decent sized super computer with 460,000 cores.
https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/about-us/w ... ercomputer
What's interesting is that they use chaos theory to help their calculations. If you have an individual data point that is 1.4 you have no idea if it's really 1.355 or 1.444 , that difference can be significant as a value could be rising but you don't notice it until it's too late. If you model it with every value between the two you can get 90 different progressions and that might just show a tiny possibility of extreme weather. That's why we get percentages chances for rain etc and it's also why they are far less frequently caught out by extreme weather than they used to be.
I don't know exactly what the data points are that the programmers have used for the football but it's the same as any program, crap data in crap data out.
There was a similar super computer story going around about 3 weeks ago, that one predicted the same bottom 3 and us in 17th.

We will get 38 points and survive. Yes, it's going to be tight but
