This is the big worry for me now. War is unpredictable, boundaries are greyed out and it becomes very easy for Russia to spill over to a NATO country especially if Ukraine start a decent fight back with assistance from NATO.Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Fri Feb 25, 2022 7:02 pmGerman Foreign minister very worried that an "unpredictable Putin" might cross NATO countries borders

not good in Kyiv, main square webcam went off, looks like the strike on the power plant must have knocked some of the power out in certain places of the city

Worth repeating, but Ukrainian troops have been fighting for eight years, and reservists will have a ridiculous amount of combat experience compared to the Russian equivalent
And they are fighting for their country
Anyone fancy looking at how the Germans fought in 1945, when all was lost, but they were defending their homes and families?
I just hope sanity appears quickly in Moscow

Re: Russia Invades
Some of you might not have followed this from a few weeks ago but something funny happened between the Russian navy and Irish fishermen.
Very briefly, on several occasions over recent years internet cables off the coasts of Sweden and Norway were mysteriously severed by an unknown saboteur. Russia was obviously suspected. Anyway, a few weeks ago Russia announced they were going to be conducting Naval exercises in the Atlantic off the south-west coast of Ireland, outside of Irish territorial waters but inside the Irish Economic Zone. These "exercises" also happened to be planned to occur right where we have a bunch of cables that cross the Atlantic. Coincidence, i'm sure.
Ireland, not having a navy, couldn't do **** about it. But the Irish fisherman decided they were going to **** with the Russians and decided that they would be just happening to be fishing in the area of the planned exercises during the time that Russia planned to hold them. After protests from Russia, which i'm sure received a brief response, Russia decided the exercises weren't that important after all and cancelled them.
Anyway. The Irish protestors harassing the Russian ambassador reminded me of that, and i found it amusing again.

Re: Russia Invades
Foreign Policy/Military Analyst:
-Russian morale low. Expected to be welcomed with open arms by populace.
- Russian troops very green. Reluctant to dismount APC’s and provide screening when in contact. Contributes to high casualty rate.
- Russian leadership at platoon, company and battalion level highly questionable
- Russian command and control inflexible.
-Ukraine decision not to withdraw to the Dnepr and to remain in the east possibly a critical strategic failure

There are demonstrations in Russia and Demonstrations here.Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Fri Feb 25, 2022 7:09 pmWe can't
We really can't
We can provide ammo, guns, tanks, whatever, but we can't help
If we help, then Putin has all the ammo he needs to say that this was always going to happen, plus the very realistic possibility of fighting between NATO troops and Russian forces, with all the dangers that entails
The harshest sanctions imaginable plus logistical support (certain NATO forces are still equipped with Russian military equipment, and that could be utilised and replaced by more modern up to date NATO equipment) is the way to go
These need to get bigger.
If ther is one in Manchester I will be there. Make it massive.

Re: Russia Invades
This eventually ends with him being killed, probably by his own people, and hopefully not too far into the future.
The way young Russians in particular lent their support to Alex Nalvany, and the way in which thousands have protested against the war at potentially huge personal cost to themselves, shows that they value peace and freedom more than any desperate "Empire" ideology.
And all that despite the being subjected to and bombarded with the Russian state's huge propaganda and misinformation machine.

Re: Russia Invades
Busy week at work and my Twitter feed is suddenly huge. Too much news to catch up on.
I reckon our advantage here is that such a despotic regime doesn’t lend itself to loyalty or to delegated authority. That in turn will lead to mistakes as every decision has to be escalated upwards. We have seen that already as the Russians appears to have changed strategy at least twice.
Very plausible they could get bogged down, literally, when the ice melts. Hard to see an ‘out’ for Putin after this, even if he ‘wins’.

They'll make it to the Ukrainians. Their commanders will make sure they all know we are on their side.
While on the Russian side, their soldiers will have to put up with Tucker Carlson and Nigel Farage clips as morale boosters.

One thing not to forget is that the Ukrainians will be getting the full on, maximum NATO intelligence
There won't be any surprises, and I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the Russians have absolutely no idea how good NATO battlefield intel is
