I'm in Phuket at the moment. Lots of Russians in our hotel..... They're a strange bunch... Ignorant, miserable bordering on angry looking.... Can't help wondering what they think of the English who are a minority here but always appear happy and content.

Been visiting Thailand for a number of years and now have a wife of twelve years and a home near Chiang Mai. On the occasions I have visited Pattaya I have come across many situations with arrogant aggressive Russians. Long before the Ukraine situation, always found them to be a strange breed.Sutton-Claret wrote: ↑Thu Aug 17, 2023 1:28 pmI'm in Phuket at the moment. Lots of Russians in our hotel..... Interesting that there’s a clear divide in attitudes in sort of over and under 25 as well as who (appears to be at least) educated and not.
Anyway, they he made one vid asking people their opinion about England/Britain and pretty much everyone of working age / non student that he interviewed basically had us down as being their number enemy - they truly despise us now

Re: Russia Invades
The sheer weight of the UKR artillery (now they’ve serious ammo ) is really starting to impact the front lines in the south .They’re 24/7 shelling pining down the RUS forces making serious defence difficult . Appears the minefields are the real hinderance to a major breakthrough. Ultimately all depends when the US decide enough is enough .

Also absolutely nobody speaks a word of English, or at at least they pretend not to understand if they do. It’s unlikely we would ever be allowed back but I’d certainly never go if we were

Re: Russia Invades
I read an ex Russian general was claiming any F16 infrastructure in Ukraine would be swiftly blown up once near readiness.
I wonder what would be the implications / possibility of them being based over the borders in Poland / Slovakia? Can't say i'm overly familiar with the range of an F16. Could a NATO fuel tanker do in-flight refueling without this counting as NATO engagement?

If an F16 took off from a NATO country then it would definitely count as NATO involvement.ŽižkovClaret wrote: ↑Wed Aug 23, 2023 12:47 pmI read an ex Russian general was claiming any F16 infrastructure in Ukraine would be swiftly blown up once near readiness.

Same as when Reagan bombed Libya and the B52s took off from RAF Fairford. We were seen as being jointly involved

Pretty sure Wagner are back to Africa /Syria and other Russian outposts etc as “ contracted soldiers “ aren’t they ? Putin played a cool hand not having him disappear right after ,thus averting more instability . But talk about a dead man walking..or flying in this case…

Really hope they retaliate. Would love to see Putin brought down by his own people.
In many ways the best thing they could do is go and fight against Russia in Ukraine.

What do I know?
Aren't they mercenaries? Won't they fight on the side of who is likely to pay them? The King is dead, long live the King, and all that? Won't they just turn their allegiance? Possibly to Putin?
As I said, I am no expert on any of this and love the input from those of you who clearly know plenty.

Evidently a nick name of the Wagner forces is orchestra.
So surprise, surprise Putin in a speech tonight commemorating the battle of Kursk stands in front of an orchestra. Just letting everyone know who authorised the plane crash that killed another 9 individuals.

Re: Russia Invades
Where've you been for the past 3-plus decades? Russia threw off the yoke of communism in December 1991 when the old USSR was disbanded and Boris Yeltsin became President of the new independent state of Russia. The current state of Russia says more about the effects of the last 30 years of rampant, gangster-controlled capitalism and Tzarism than communism, never mind socialism....

Re: Russia Invades
Seems a good summary of the Wagner situation.
https://www.understandingwar.org/backgr ... st-23-2023
A summary is that Putin has been eating away at Wagner since the rebellion, strangling it's finances and taking over its work. He felt confident enough to assassinate its leaders (Utkin was on board too apparently along with other maybe important Wagner officials) that any Wagner response could be controlled.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/world-66599774
At 0635 it gives a list of passengers on the plane and what their position was with Wagner.

Worth noting this was an Independence Day publicity stunt albeit a very good one indeed ,showing that UKR can indeed strike and enter Crimea . Pretty sure with a touch more progress in the south they can seriously start to facilitate long distance artillery shelling which would be a huge game changer .

I’d have loved to see Putin have a Gaddafi like end or I’d even settle for a Hitler bunker style as the army would quickly change sides if (IMO) , things were really happening .Alas he appears to have played this textbook dictator style .Hipper wrote: ↑Thu Aug 24, 2023 9:17 amSeems a good summary of the Wagner situation.

There appears to be a real push from the UA towards Tokmak, now Robotyne has fallen. Tokmak still some distance away, and serves as a logistics hub for the Russians.

There is also a claim here that the crew survived.
(As said above) - believed to be in battles around Robotyne; quite a lot of destruction in that area at the moment with the Ukrainians slowly but surely advancing.
