Think this is Russian artillery firing in support of the Russian Tank (or the Russian Tank is firing 50 yards in front itself for no reason)
But its not that is noteoworthy, its the damage to the town and the fields around it
That is destruction on a scale that is hard to comprehend

Two things to note
- One, it will probably work
- Two, there is a limit to how long they can do this before they run out of stuff
Remember they have gone from taking over Ukraine, to taking over the Donbass, to taking Siverdonestk
Each time, what they can do is a lot smaller
I just hope the Ukrainians are not daft enough to be trapped in Siverdonestk when there is absolutely no reason to stay there if its in danger of being cut off

I can't question Ukraine tactics or strategy, because so far they've been spot on, I just pray they have another trick up their sleeves for when the Russians start running out of personnel and weapons. These things are all about timing.

I hope they can cross the remaining bridge out of there into the next town. Then hold that with a river to help them.

De Gaul never forgave Britain, but history forgets it was De Gaul himself refusing to allow the French navy to come under the Royal Navy that sealed the French fleets fate. Churchill simply couldn’t allow the French ships to fall into Nazi hands.

The only French fleet that ended up in Free French hands was the one in Alexandria, and that is only because the the Royal Navy essentially talked to them and starved them off supplies so they couldn't move
Mers el Kabir is one of those that seemed logical and necessary at the time, but there was probably no chance of the French fleet surrendering to the Germans, as even a rabid Nazi backing Vichy regime scuttled the ones in Toulon when the Germans took it over in 1942
A stain on our history sadly, and still not fully understood either here or in France
But veering massively off topic!
I'm not sure the Harpoons have the capability on their own of forcing Russian ships away from the Ukrainian coast, so that it can safe to transit for civilian and cargo vessels

The campaigns in Syria (1940) and Madagascar (1942) against Vichy French forces that refused to join the Free French are not well known, but certainly in Syria it was a pretty vicious campaign with very few of the French troops joining the Free French

Not that I doubted it, but you certainly know your history. Mers el Kabir is, as you rightly said, not fully understood in the UK - virtually unknown of I would say - nor in France.
From my reading on the subject, limited I must admit, it was a "lose/lose" scenario but if I had to say who was right I do think it was the British. They tried their best to avoid to attack the French ships but the French gave them no choice. History shows us IMHO that the British were right to attack them otherwise they would have been used by Vichy/the Nazis.

With the benefit of hindsight, then no
I think (personally) that the Vichy French fleet in French North Africa wouldn't have surrendered itself to the Germans, and would almost certainly have scuttled
You have to remember that the Free French were convinced large part of Africa to join with them, but not Dakar, French North Africa, Syria, Madagascar or Indo-China
Have to add the attack on Dakar by a British/Free French force in 1940 that failed as well
Even when the Allies attacked North Africa during Operation Torch, there was a couple of days of heavy fighting - USS Massachusetts sank a couple of French destroyers in support of the landing
