Goalkeeper skippers

Post by longsidetrumpet » Fri Mar 04, 2022 11:42 am

I can't recall us ever having a captain who was the goalkeeper, but I stand to be corrected. Spurs currently have Lloris but I'm struggling to think of any more, also any from the past!!

Dino Zoff, Iker Casillas, Hugo Lloris and Gianpiero Combi all captained World Cup winners.
Schmeichel captains Leicester, doesn’t he. Never been a big thing in England but regular abroad.

Heaton was a brilliant captain.
He was indeed, and he was always vocal in the box. His box it’s fair to say, but whilst I don’t want to take anything away from Tom, let’s not forget the help he got from Barton in the middle of the park.

Waste of an armband imo.

A keeper should be acting line a captain anyway, so captain ideally should be a central midfielder who can boss the pitch

There aren't many 'keepers who are captains.

What do you think the ratio is? About 11-1?

On a serious note, centrebacks and central midfielders seem more likely positions to endear themselves to captaincy but there's always exceptions.

Manuel Neuer captained Bayern with great success, and Germany as well.
