Looking decidedly bad for us if Everton get the 3 points.
which they just have.
We're running out of hope.
Hope that we can mange to win a few games and Leeds implode.

Hanging on a thread.

Hammer blow result. April is do or die. 7 games and we probably need to win 4, maybe 5.

Some ground Goodison when they get behind them.

Turf Moor used to be like that.

Commentators calling it a massive win but a win for us would put the situation straight back to how it was. Lots of twists and turns left in this season.
You do realise we play City in our next game don't you. Not much chance of a win in that one, and the games are rapidly running out for us to scramble out of trouble.

Everton and Leeds have both snatched wins in injury time over the past few days which just sums up how things aren't going our way when we could do with a break or two.

I know that we don’t look like getting any more points all season but I would still think we can do better than Everton over the remaining games as they have a dreadful set of fixtures. It’s not over yet.

Only twist and turns left this season is McNeil when he receives it with 3 men on him, no one to pass to so goes back to Taylor

If I believed you that 9 points was our maximum, I would agree.

Remember we have Newcastle on the last day. If they play like that, we can hardly fail to win. I know Everton barely had one chance and one chance can always be missed, but when the 6 defenders all fail to spot the single forward in the box, and the keeper stands by his right hand post before moving further to his right, then I think any of our forwards could put it in.

Everton have what we don’t. Match winning clinical players. Players with quality to get you out of a hole.
That chance falls to one of ours it hits the corner flag. That is the difference.
They also have a manger who makes subs and knows subs change games, and plays his best side, something we lack.
These are the things the other clubs just above us have that we simply don’t.
Also having big crowds in big grounds that actually get behind their team helps as well.
Today I feel our last remaining hope left us. Everton will stop up. They showed they have the players and the players have the desire. Same goes for Leeds, Brentford and Newcastle. They want to stay in this league and have the players.

We went on a great run of three games getting seven points

We then brought Westwood back and have lost the last three

But you are right - we should be nowhere near these sides :o

I am just looking at the stats and I don’t believe we will get more than 9 points from our remaining 11 fixtures.

Our form this season is 21 points from 27 games = 0.77 points per game. Based on that we will finish on around 29-30 points.

Our form over the last season and half is 60 points from 65 games = 0.92 points per game. Based on this form we will finish on around 30-31 points.

Unless our form dramatically changes from what we have seen over the last 18 months then Everton only need another 6 points for safety.

If ever Newcastle needed a warning it was tonight. Eddie Howe is a charlatan, treading water despite their investments and that defeat only serves to emphasise that he is someone to be avoided in the management stakes.

I’m getting pretty fed up of Westwood being labelled as the scapegoat. WE didn’t bring Westwood back, DYCHE did. Yes perhaps he should have selected Cork but get off Westwood’s back please. He has been one of our most consistent players during our Premier League tenure.

Fair play to Everton though, that was the most fired up Everton team I think I’ve ever watched. On the receiving end of a harsh red card but went on to score a well crafted winner.

Dramatically changes? If our current form leads us to estimated 30-31 points, and we need 31 to stop up, I wouldn't necessarily say it has to dramatically improve. Marginally might be a better word?

We all know that the City game's a write off.
Which means we realistically have to win five of the remaining ten games.

Not completely impossible, but pretty unlikely.
Given we've only won three all season.

Our issues are:

1. We’ve failed over several windows to strengthen midfield. There’s a reason we don’t score - we don’t create enough quality chances or retain the ball well enough.

2. We used to play Westwood and Cork and were doing okay. We dropped Cork for Brownhill and have frankly gone downhill. I’m not saying we should go back to Westwood/Cork but we definitely haven’t got the balance right since that pairing was changed. 18 months or whatever we’ve persisted with this pairing and Dyche hasn’t sussed it isn’t delivering.

So, despite 1 - the lack of investment - there’s a good portion of accountability on Dyche and it’s frustrating that is neither changed nor acknowledged. Too late now but to Tony’s point, I agree we shouldn’t be competitive given our (lack of) spend but think we might’ve been more competitive with some different team selections.

Gutting, but we've made our own bed.
The best team on paper for a long time, played some good football at times, but when we needed to show some composure and cohones we failed badly.
Some people can point to the lack of luck this season, but I believe you make your own.

My apologies. So we're on for 29 or 30 points and it needs a dramatic turnaround in form to get to 31?

It doesn't actually need that dramatic a turn round in form. Some very minor adjustments to luck wouldn't go amiss. Both the offside goals against Leicester, the non-penalty against Norwich, the non-sending off against Palace, the crossbar against Brentford. Fine margins, and if one of two of those coin-toss fine margins go in our favour instead of against us, we could sneak a couple of undeserved wins to help us out.

Look at Everton today. Never did a side deserve a win less - they were an utter shambles. But a bit of lucky defending from themselves and incompetent attacking from Newcastle, and a defence that thought it was Iwobi's testimonial game and they needed to give him an easy goal - that's all it took.

Newcastle sold out to big money owners. Our new owners emptied the safe. Newcastle sold there way out of trouble. We sold our way deeper into trouble

Take your point but that's a sad indictment of the state of professional football in this country now. Their supporters have been shouting the odds for a few games now but in essence little has changed as they concentrate more on a future than a very questionable present. No sour grapes here from me , good luck to them but not going in a direction that my advanced years sees as healthy. Very different to when I first started watching professional football well over 60 years ago. That was fun and exciting, it's not anymore.

I know it's had it's critics but looks a great atmosphere at the London stadium tonight. Entire stadium on their feet.

We look doomed.

Everything that can go wrong, is going wrong this season.

Lucks gone towards as well as against us, Kane & zaha hitting the crossbar as well as others it’s not 1 way misfortune street, thing now though with Everton is that they’ll have some belief & confidence going forwards & that can count for a lot we don’t have that & have pretty much hit a brick wall following Brighton & Tottenham.

Even so, we've scored 22 and hit the woodwork 9 times. Everton, for example, have scored 29 and hit the woodwork 3 times. (Not sure if tonight is included.) So they only had one more shot within the frame of the goal but have 7 more goals - there's luck involved as well as skill there. A bit of good fortune is not impossible.

(Mind you, leeds hit the woodwork 15 times.)

Luck can change at any time & be favourable erratically, having positivity based on the law of averages with our luck changing is a fanciful stretch as a mild understatement, we might indeed be due some luck but whether we receive it is another thing. We need to be better at playing football & encourage our own good luck.
