Grassington nice enough if you like wharfedale, it’s quiet & plenty of nice walks & other places not too far away.

Other than not having a railway station and the cheapest house being around £150k over budget, Grassington is perfect for the OP.

Can anyone recommend anywhere affordable that is in a nice area and is a 30 to 50min train journey from the Accrington/Burnley area?

It is for a 2nd home and needs to be either in a scenic inland area with things to do close like Hebden Bridge but preferably in an up and coming undervalued area!...

I know these areas are like gold dust but worth trying...

As mentioned, I and the wife love Hebden Bridge... Kendal is another favourite but we also love the coast as our dog loves it as well...

... So far, I have seen the Gauxholme Railway Viaduct near Todmorden as maybe a cheaper alternative to Hebden Bridge and other areas I see value is further up from Blackpool going towards Fleetwood...

North Wales and Morecombe with the new Eden Project being built there was an option but I probably missed that boat with the house price rises in both those areas over the last few years... I would also prefer somewhere a bit closer than those two or at least a straight easy train journey with no changes... An easy train journey up to 40 or 50mins from the Accrington/Burnley area is an important factor in this decision.

So basically I am looking for a 2nd home in a coastal or scenic inland area that can be in a quiet town but close enough to a more touristy area to eat out extra if we want to and with a budget between 130k to 180k that can buy me more than just an apartment or a tiny cottage!... A doer-upper type house is an option too if the location is fine.

You've already mentioned the obvious one - Todmorden.

Have you looked further over into Yorkshire and considered Sowerby Bridge? Cheaper than hebden and far less pretentious.

I know its got no rail link and I'll get some grief for even mentioning it, but, if your looking for similar countryside BUT a far far more affordable property with more bang for your buck. Literally just over the hill from Tod is Bacup. I know its a wild card but take a look at house prices.......

Dunno about availability though... I'm desperately seeking something in the Kettlewell/Burnsall/Buckden areas..or even as distant as Dentdale,as a base on my travels north..and there's very little on offer regardless of price.

Well the MP is the leader of Northern Powerhouse. I have to laugh at all this talk of reversing the Beeching cuts. Many of the stone built bridges have been dismantled and Bocholt Way was built where the tracks were. So like Bangkok there would have to an overhead railway.

It would probably take around the desired 30-50 minute train travel time if he was to start at Burnley Barracks, then on to Burnley Central, before finally arriving at Burnley Manchester Road.

So Alan was a Long Prestoner but lives in Hellifield and you were born in Hellifield and moved to Long Preston. So whose side were you both on !?

Don't know if you know him but another Hellifielder I got to know was Ian Grey, a joiner and a Stoke City fan! He grew up in Hellifield and as far as I remember, never set foot in the potteries but was a Stoke fan. Given his age I reckon Stoke were doing well in the early 70s and he chose to follow them. ( think he once actually said that was the case )

He could do a decent(ish!) rendition of Angels by Robbie Williams on a dodgy karaoke when I was in Hellifield.

To be fair, when you read the OP's original requirements, it's a decent shout !

Country side virtually identical or within a couple of hours walk away.

Far more affordable property prices.

Spoilt for choice for local train stations.

Downside- traveling time could be a problem if you do the first 3 stations then include Rosegrove.

Plus the little sign on the building facing what was the cattle market where they met which was painted green , red and gold lettering was my handy work while I was there!

My oldest lives in settle and works in "Gigg" so I'm often up and around your neck of the woods . I try and remind him he's lucky to live in such a nice part of the world. He was always wanting to go to the bright lights of Leeds a few years ago but now he definitely appreciates where he lives.

Don't know if you saw it but Alistair Campbell ( he of war criminality !) Did a brief 30 minute winter walk tv programme and it started in Settle . Met a guy restoring a dry stone wall. He said some of the walls round there are around 700 years old!!

As a Lancastrian I have to admit that Yorkshire , north in particular, is a fine county.

If your criteria is it needs to be 30-50 mins from Burnley / Accrington by train, without changing trains you've got Leeds or Manchester one way and Preston Blackpool the other.
On the coast, Lythams quite nice, decent shops, places to eat and sea air, but pricey to live there I would think.

Or you could Change trains at Blackburn for Whalley / Clitheroe and Hellifield and the Settle Carlisle line. Nice spots along there for the Yorkshire Dales.
