Connor Roberts
Rare you see a right back off for a right back. After his tweets last weekend and consistent poor performances is he about to enter the Ben Gibson zone?

No. A long way from a PL FB though. Wales use him WR and we should do the same.

Re: Connor Roberts
He’s just a bit too naive and inexperienced for this level, or rather, this situation. I would be starting Lowton as he’s been and done it in this situation before.
Let Roberts bed into the team next season when it’s a clean slate, whichever league we’re in.

the game completely changed when Lowton came on
Re: Connor Roberts
What’s he been tweeting?
He’s not had the best of starts to his Burnley career.

Re: Connor Roberts
Shouldn’t have started, but it was absolutely the right decision to sub him. Richarlison had him on toast and was dictating the game until the sub. An early reducer from Lowton and he faded from the game, as we’ve seen from him before.
I think Roberts may come good, but I’d leave him out for the rest of the season now - work with him on the training ground and give him a fresh start next season.

Re: Connor Roberts
To be fair he was up against a very, very good player in a very big game. It's not often you see a regular starter for Brazil in a relegation fight. Lowton has more experience and had the benefit of playing less time.
You saw Lowtons experience straight away. It took him a few seconds to hurt Richarlison. Good old school full back tactics.

it's difficult coming in to such a nailed on back line, just ask Gibson

Re: Connor Roberts
He has actually played as a winger for Swansea ,scoring a few in the process, possibly an option going forward, he is used as a wing back for Wales which gives us scope to change in the future.

Re: Connor Roberts
I have promoted Roberts to get a start, but must confess he looked very exposed and naive tonight, as he has for a few weeks. Lowton adds more composure to our defence and I think he should now start

Re: Connor Roberts
I still think Roberts is our future, but defensively he has work to do against Premier league class players. Top often he affords them too much space and rarely stops the cross or pass. I think if he gets that sorted he will be absolutely class.
Re: Connor Roberts
I’d like to see Lowts back for the run in, on the evidence I’ve seen he’s a far better defender!
Re: Connor Roberts
I would drop Lennon and play Roberts with Lowton at fb

Re: Connor Roberts
I think Roberts will be a great addition to the Squad and he has been introduced at a time when we have not been getting results
Also think , like a lot of posters, that Lowton should start now as he has fabulous experience
Next season will be decided by who performs best in the pre season

Re: Connor Roberts
Frantic, poor positioning, poor distribution and an awful long throw. He’s had a bloody poor start to his time with us.

Shocking g tonight. I wouldn't mind if he did anything going forward. First half Tarkowski was carrying the entire back line

I was crying to get him off the pitch.
He either didn’t look fit enough or just completely out of his depth.
He was all over the place and players were going past him like he wasn’t even there

He had a shocker tonight. Then Lowton came on and picked up a petulant yellow and I feared the worst with the way they were ripping us open down that flank.

There's a difference between playing wing back and winger.

Not up to it yet at full back. I'd like see him at wing back though.
Re: Connor Roberts
Thats where we need Bards sometimes. He once nearly put him in the stand v Watford a few seasons back.

I think he worked himself into the ground and the sub was timed just about right.
Up against Richarlison who can be unplayable at times.

Re: Connor Roberts
Both full backs tonite were shocking. Taylor (who I am usually a fan of) will get away with it due to the assist for the winner but both were poor tonite, and Roberts slightly the worst. I’m 56 with the pace of a slug and I reckon I could back him into the box by running at him.
I was desperate for a look at Roberts… seen him enough to know he should only be cover for Lowton, at least in the short term. I think SD has also seen that tonite hence the early sub.
Now we just need him to see that capt hook needs a rest in midfield and we will be somewhere near having a go.

Re: Connor Roberts
Was worth a punt, but ultimately found wanting. Lowton isn't the answer any longer, but he's still better than Roberts for now (imo)
Re: Connor Roberts
To be fair to Taylor, although he was pretty poor in the first half, he grew into the game in the second. His run and cross (credit to Tarkowski in the build up too) was fantastic.bobinho wrote: ↑Wed Apr 06, 2022 11:00 pmBoth full backs tonite were shocking. Wenger used to say it often took players a season to settle in.
Looks like some have written off Roberts after 13 matches.

I thought Taylor had a pretty good game tonight. Roberts was poor again. Think DCwat is pretty bang on with both comments.bobinho wrote: ↑Wed Apr 06, 2022 11:00 pmBoth full backs tonite were shocking. Re: Connor Roberts
He was obviously poor defensively but what was disappointing was how poor he was with the ball.
He's ok running with the ball but his passing is really poor. He just seems to be behind the play with no thought on what he's going to do with the ball until he gets it so he always needs an extra touch to give him some thinking time. By that point everyone has been picked up and he ends up going backwards or giving it away.

Lads lucky to be alive.
He was very very ill. Give him some slack.
Minor miracle he's playing premier league football such a short time after.

Re: Connor Roberts
Not done great for us - so far - but always looks impressive for Wales. Maybe the difference in playing styles? I'm not one for moving players out of position just because we have deficiencies there, (like put Tarky in midfield etc.) but FWIW, I do think he looks more of a right sided midfield player.
