Jordan Pickford No 1

Post by JohnMac » Wed Apr 06, 2022 11:14 pm

His kicking is at a different level to Nick Pope and shot stopping ability just as good. The reflex save was a 10/10.

Two very good Keepers plying their trade tonight but Pickford is undoubtedly the Number One for that reason.

Pope sometimes looks like he's never played the game when it's at his feet...almost comical. But his actual keeping makes up for it no end

I think it was Pickfords slice that contributed to our winner

Two absolutely wonderful passes from Pickford, but he was awful on the first goal and contributed heavily to the winner.

Yeh Pickford did wonderfully for the first letting a cross sail through his sux yard box to the back post, and then his superb footwork to give us a throw in to score the winner from, all he has his a long kick as a keeper he’s a liability hasn’t got the right temperament.

No arsed what his passing is like, he's an absolutely junk goalkeeper.

He’s a great passer of the ball but contributed to his side conceding two goals. Give me a keeper that can’t pass but makes less mistakes any day.

Done nothing wrong for England and was excellent at the Euros. Until he makes a few mistakes for England there is no debate.
And while we are here, whilst not expected to save pens Pope was pretty clueless on both. Looked like a lack of research to me,

pickford is useless compared to pope. southgate relies on the chump, therefore he will look ok providing his defenders do their job.
As england never win any tournaments , its a dubious claim to say he is any good.
Pope for me every day of the week. this kicking business is minor irrelevance. Between the posts and array of saves, Pope is the one and only. no contest.

Maguire doesn't make mistakes for England but amasses them for his club.

Club football is stronger than international football these days. Times have changed.

Pickford will be picking lots out of his net, with the run in they have. Maybe he will be shot by the WC or struggling in the Championship.

That's a good point about the championship, if he's down there and Everton are getting battered then will he still be England's first choice 🤔
Teams will raise their game for Everton in the championship

Pope is very good at stopping the ball going into the net but he wastes more time than any other player I've ever seen, even when we're losing. He takes forever to take a goal kick, often changing which side of the six yard box to take it from. Why doesn't someone at the club have a bit of a word with him and while they're at it, teach him how to kick a ball?

As others have said, I can understand why Pickford is in goal for England. His distribution and kicking is far superior to Pope's.

Far superior is an overstatement, the stats will show there isn't much in it and Pope isn't the worst kicker in the league as another poster on here tried to claim once

It makes me wonder where Everton's season would be heading if it wasn't for Pickford's superior passing. 😉

I'm really not sure what those stats show, other than there are five English goalkeepers rated higher than Pope or Pickford. Also Everton's reserve keeper is 5th and even Hennesey is ahead of both Pope and Pickford. Stats don't mean much at all. It just depends who compiles them.

I note you didn't say anything about Pope's timewasting, even when we're behind.

Hard to do research on Richarlison as the penalty taker when he only just got given the job, previously it was Calvert-Lewin but recently he lost it after a miss. I agree that Pope could have done better but there wasn't a body of work to study beforehand.

Both teams had 4 shots on target (according to BBC). Pickford let 3 in...... Pope 0. That should be the kind of stat Southgate should be looking at.

Although his kicking has always been a weakness in his game, it has improved tremendously since he arrived.

Captain and a leader yet somehow didn't organise their box for our first goal. There's one thing he'll never be great at and that's commanding his area. Made it very easy for us from corners.

He's a nice guy and been a top player for England. Wouldn't mind him at our club if Pope leaves. His goalkeeping outside of commanding his area is pretty good.

Those kind of penalties are a game of cat and mouse. Easier said than done, but if a keeper doesn't commit to the dive, the penalty taker will be forced to pick a side, likely with little power and give the keeper a chance. Once the keeper dives, then the taker just had to roll it the other side.

Lovely moment towards the end of the game when two of our defenders dropped deep when we had a goal kick. Stood there for a few seconds then trotted back upfield.

Play the ******* at their own game.

With the penalties, Pope is just following the instructions from the goalkeeping coach where you pick a side to dive to give you the best chance of saving the pen.

Pope saves hundreds of shots from a lot closer than the penalty spot using his reflexes - why he should be coached to abandon that is something I'll never understand.

I've never known anyone like Nick Pope who gives me so much confidence with the ball with his hands and yet so much fear when the ball is at his feet.

Yep Burnley fans have a strange obsession with Pickford. He’s a top keeper and is better than Pope.

He is admittedly due to the consistency so is ramsdale & Henderson’s but pope is still a bloody keeper for us & more than capable for a team like ours, we’d be a lot worse off without him.

He’s a solid keeper heaton was always going to be a hard act to follow but I think pope’s better of the 2 & we did good from charlton.

I think earlier in the season Pope below what he has shown before but for the last few months he has been excellent. Great reflex saves and back to being dependable on crosses. As for kicking accuracy, in a swirling wind last night? Pickford and Pope would struggle with this, so what.

You’ll never get everybody agreeing on topics like this because everybody will have their own individual preferences & biases, doesn’t really matter apart from what Gareth Southgate thinks.
