I thought of this man when I called him big vince. Though I only saw him in his 90s spell (a game away at Rotherham sticks in my mind) he was certainly an imposing figure.
He’s a top man is Vince but I wouldn’t have liked to have got on the wrong side of him on the pitch.

This is all true, but Silva is a very experienced manager, and Cooper, Coberan and Dyche had all got plenty of coaching years under their belts. The outlier is Parker, and he's had plenty to spend in both his Championship seasons.

So I'm not sure the comparison quite holds. Kompany has lots about him to suggest he could be a success, but the fact he's got only 2-3 years of experience, all as manager in a relatively weak domestic league, does mean it's reasonable to be a bit cautious about whether this is something of a leap. It's eye catching, but DCWat is quite right to say that exciting does not equal good.

I'm open minded about Kompany and I think there's lots to like about him, but it's a gamble. I'd like to think that gamble is softened if he's willing to work with the group of senior players, and I think an experienced coach who has been about the championship would be a good idea too. Interestingly Silva's assistant is Stuart Gray - which sort of underscores the point.
Not disagreeing, just countering the “doesn’t know the league” argument. There’s a lot of recent examples of managers being successful without having cut their teeth with another in the Championship first.

I’ve no idea whether he’ll be a good appointment or not, but he’s got two difficult years under his belt by the sounds of it and some of the Mancini or Pep magic may have rubbed off on him.

Or off it. Around 1990 I was driving up Towneley to play cricket and passed a bloke cycling, full lycia on and had massive calf muscles. As I got out of the car the cyclist pulls up, removes his helmet and sunglasses and I immediately recognised it was Big Vince. I think he was with Stoke back then and was one of the mercenaries playing for Jeff Heap and Hapton Inn.

As Tony says a top bloke but physically imposing and not the sort of bloke you would get on the wrong side of.

Been golfing so have only checked a couple of pages on here.

On one side - worrying on more than one level that Burnley could appoint a manager just about young enough to be my son

On the other side - comparisons with Waddle is farcical, I’ve played golf with Waddle, I like the guy, but he’s a normal north eastern chap, no offence to them even though I’m still smarting after Sunday, but Kompany is probably one of the top 5 intelligent multiple Premier League champions of all time, has the ear of many of the world’s best managers and could easily be the Pep of the future.

I tried to talk myself out of liking that idea by looking at the Anderlecht Twitter announcement, but most fans seem brassed off, thinking Kompany was their route out of a rut, and believe he has jumped ship, using them as a stepping stone, while as an ex club legend they still admire him.

So I’m not seeing anything to suggest this is a bad idea. We need to get this over the line and keep the team intact other than Pope,Tarky and Cornet who I view as all certain to leave. If we do that, and strengthen a bit, I think we’ll be favourites. The latter is obviously the big risk. Money. But I think ALK will gamble in year 1.

In the past it was often on a Thursday that we announced our new signings.

So as it's Thursday maybe today we will announce the signing of our new Manager Vincent Kompany?

Selected points from today's Times (nothing we don't already know i suppose):

"Burnley hopeful of persuading Kompany to take the reins"
(Paul Hirst)

- "a few details in the deal are yet to be agreed but the club are hopeful that the 36 year old Belgian will become the permanent replacement for Sean Dyche"

- 3 man shortlist - Kompany, Rooney, Knutsen

- Jackson not under consideration

- Craig Bellamy is set to be assistant if Kompany agrees to take over

- Kompany also has offers from Wolfsburg and BM

- "Burnley executives have been trying to persuade Kompany in recent days that the job is worth taking even though the club are now in the 2nd tier"

Just wondering if the Bellamy/Welsh connection here might help us sign that Rabbi Matondo. He looked what we need - Brennan Johnson sort of player/pace.

I'm not sure how to post YouTube links, but in the documentary made by Anderlecht Bellamy quits his position as coach for family and mental health reasons.
I may have got the wrong angle completely on this but if that was the case, then maybe Kompany may try someone new.

If the Times report today is correct and the short list consists of Kompany, Rooney and Knutsen, in what order would you put them to offer the job?

I don't like the idea of two very good footballers taking charge, where they could still very well be better than the players they have to coach.
People who find things easy don't appreciate others might struggle.

The balance of having one who could raise standards and the other who appreciates the players are trying their best will work better IMHO.

Knutsen, Rooney, Kompany for me.

But I appreciate the owners need a big name for their brand to attract investors.

It's only on whims as nobody knows enough about any of them.

He looked good on that you tube video, but if instead of watching him, you looked at the defenders on that video, you would notice that they were all shocking. I don't think he has enough to play like that in the championship, never mind the Prem, IF we are lucky.
Not trying to diss the guy, just being realistic. A decent defender would have prevented half of those runs.

Good point. I remember when Martin Buchan got the job when we were in the old Fourth Division, it didn't work out too well. Will be interesting to see how things pan out if Kompany does get appointed.

Likewise Waddle in the third tier. But then I think we do a disservice to the players we have now by looking at it in those terms.

And Kompany has the benefit of having actually managed for the last 3 years.

Without wishing to be a constant downer this is a big red flag for me. Heard bad things about him from someone I consider reliable.

Kompany isn't ideal but might be as good as we can get and certainly has the reputation to appear exciting and possibly attract players. Bellamy I would not want near Burnley.

That said I said the same about Barton and he turned good for us, so if he comes I'll back him and hope.

Good point. I remember when Martin Buchan got the job when we were in the old Fourth Division, it didn't work out too well. Will be interesting to see how things pan out if Kompany does get appointed.
Buchan had issues that Kompany doesn’t.

I notice Alan Nixon has been very quiet on us recently. Looks like his leak might have gone with the management cull.

Knutsen, Kompany, a lot of others, Rooney.

Every appointment is a risk but I believe Kompany would be a success.

The other 2 names on the reported shortlist are 14/1 and 22/1.
