Crazy
Can’t mark watching from TV
He was excellent the Spurs goal was given by Atwell on var
At the other end would not have asked Friend to look.
Once he did Friend had to give penalty as those are the current rules.

This thread could be entertaining, however it's worth bearing in mind that Friend didn't give the pen, Attwell on VAR did.

Friend gave the pen. He looked at it on the monitor. He made the decision.

Were you disappointed it was only 1-0 today? Think you said on here you hoped we’d lose 10-0 at West Ham.
Anyway, if the decision is a foregone conclusion once a ref is sent to a monitor, what’s the point in sending them? Just let the VAR official make the call and save us a few minutes ******* about.

Referee’s decision is final. He has to take ultimate responsibility for the disgusting decision that gave Spurs 3 points and denied us the draw.

VAR recommended Friend to have a look at it. Friend 100% gives the pen. But we know what happens when they go to the monitor. The pause before he gives it is totally disgusting. Look at me attitude. Tosser.

He lacked the courage and character to disagree with his colleague and stick with the correct decision.
The narrative now is that he “didn’t see it” in real time. I’ll have to review the footage to comment further but the truth is that there was nothing to see in real-time because it was not handball.

Maybe we should be allowed to mnemonic VAR decisions if we watch on TV?
Ultimately, friend took responsibility for the decision.
I’ve marked him accordingly.

Re: RATE THE REF - Kevin Friend v Tottenham
VAR would not have engaged Kevin Friend’s earpiece if that had occurred in the Spurs box, and I wouldn’t have cared as I wouldn’t have had the audacity to ask for such a ridiculous penalty.
The ball was 40-50cm (at most) from Ashley Barnes arm when the Spurs player smashed it at 50-60mph against it. The fact his arm was out should be a total irrelevance in those circumstances. Raheem Sterling runs like a duck with his arms out every game, am I to take it that I should inform my squad to aim to hit Sterling’s duck arms at all times in City territory to guarantee myself free-kicks and penalties, regardless if this is done at point blank range or not?
It stinks and it would never, ever have been given in the other box.

Re: RATE THE REF - Kevin Friend v Tottenham
Looked to me, on the angle shown AFTER THE DECISION, that the ball went up Barnes' chest and onto arm. Not a pen. The angle shown by VAR was a case of ref guess from half hearted Spurs reactions.

Re: RATE THE REF - Kevin Friend v Tottenham
Yes, I would love, just for once, a referee to have the balls to be directed to the monitor and actually disagree with the team at Stockley. The unwritten rule is that you're being sent to the monitor because you got it wrong, so the look is simply a precursor to a change of decision whether the ref agrees or not. The most galling thing about today's shambles is that no Spurs players thought it was a pen at the time and didn't surround the ref with appeals and they simply played on and actually almost scored. That tells us a lot I feel.Rowls wrote: ↑Sun May 15, 2022 2:48 pmThe penalty was given by Friend who was asked to watch the TV monitor.

Yep, Spurs played on. The crowd hardly reacted. The ref didn't react and it was right in his eye line. So, begs the question of why did VAR step in?

Re: RATE THE REF - Kevin Friend v Tottenham
I said it would not have had a review if at the other end .
Atwell on var by asking Friend to look was the one to blame
All the pundits said it would not be given when they played but the new rules are penalty if ball hits outstretched hand
Again clear penalty
I was annoyed by our dreadful American owners and I still am but when watching the Clarets I want us to win and I feel we were robbed today by Var

I haven’t seen any TV runs of the pen so can’t comment personally on that but I thought Friend gave the impression today that he was aware it was a top six side playing with the England captain.

The standard of referees is appalling. Amazing how they continually even with the help of technology get so many decisions wrong.

Re: RATE THE REF - Kevin Friend v Tottenham
That pause after he signalled the VAR "decision", followed by a smirk as he gave the penalty shows all that is needed of what this official is about. A self centred, pretty dam useless, official. Although, we could now just say it's the norm with this set of dreadful officials we currently have.
Re: RATE THE REF - Kevin Friend v Tottenham
The smirk before he gave the signal he was going to check on the monitor wound me up more than the decision.AwayClaret wrote: ↑Sun May 15, 2022 2:45 pmVAR recommended Friend to have a look at it. Re: RATE THE REF - Kevin Friend v Tottenham
We had 4 mins added time so why did we play 8?
Dirty Leeds late equaliser was a sickner but their ref gave them 8 added in the hope they'd nick a late winner
They didn't and four points this week will send them back where they belong

Re: RATE THE REF - Kevin Friend v Tottenham
A penalty (once given) has to be taken so the additional time here doesn’t count.
But what time was on the clock when the supposed “handball” took place?

Re: RATE THE REF - Kevin Friend v Tottenham
I think the penalty was given in the allocated time and then the VAR check ensured it went up to the 8 minute mark.Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Sun May 15, 2022 5:43 pmWe had 4 mins added time so why did we play 8?

They don't stop the clock for VAR.

I went today and I’m still bubbling with the way Friend reffed it. I wasn’t on my own in the away end of the stadium with a real problem with the guy. He has history with us and his non decisions for us/decisions against us. Of a very poor crop of officials we currently have this guy is at the top of the list of the worst referees about. Not going to score him because he doesn’t deserve any marks

Out of interest is there a stat for the number of times a referee hasn’t changed his decision when asked to view the monitor?

Re: RATE THE REF - Kevin Friend v Tottenham
"A player is considered to have made their body unnaturally bigger when the position of their hand/arm is not a consequence of, or justifiable by, the player’s body movement for that specific situation."
At no point was Friend shown the shove by Sanchez which led to Barnes arm being in the unnatural position in the first place, he was shown the latter part of the incident in super slow motion which made it look 100 times worse.
The shove wasn't a foul as Sanchez was just freeing himself from the attention of Barnes but made him change his stance to maintain his balance, it's a farce which ever way we look at it.

The way VAR should have worked today is that Atwell should have asked Friend if he had seen the ball hit Barnes' arm, and if (as was presumably the case) the answer was no, then Atwell should have sent him to the monitor with no further comment.
What actually happened was that Atwell, from several hundred miles away, used his skill, judgement and guesswork to assess the incident and the actions and intentions of the players (which is definitely not his job) and told Friend that he ought to give a penalty, but go and pretend to check the monitor for form's sake.
What Friend should have done when he got to the monitor, regardless of what Atwell had said or done, was to look at the whole incident and decide whether a penalty was merited. He didn't do that. He looked in slow motion, he saw that it hit Barnes' arm and his arm wasn't rigid by his side, and decided that ball-hits-hand can only be a penalty.
A lot of this isn't really the refs' fault. The laws have been skewed with change after change in recent years, to try and give as many handball penalties as they possibly can.
