Re: Aston Villa v Burnley - Player Ratings
Difficult one to rate. Fantastic result but there were some really poor performances especially in midfield. In 90 minutes our entire midfield managed 45 combined passes.
Pope 10 world class at times
Roberts 7 thought he was good both in attack and defence
Collins 7
Long 7
Tarks 7 solid
Taylor 6 would have got higher but he was so isolated at times
Brownhill 5
Cork 5
McNeil 5
Barnes 7 plus 1 for the goal
Cornet 5 struggled to make an impact
Weghorst 3
Lennon 5

Re: Aston Villa v Burnley - Player Ratings
Thought Pope was about as good as its possible to be
We defended well in the main, but will be disappointed that we let a man run in from so deep without no one picking him up earlier
Our use of the ball wasn't great, but we still managed to create the best chance of the game in the 85th minute
I'd say it was a deserved point, but it did not do a right lot for the nerves

Re: Aston Villa v Burnley - Player Ratings
Pope - 9 - Unbelievable. Last 30 mins kept us in it.
Taylor - 6 - Did OK, looked leggy to me and couldn't get forward as much as needed
Tarky - 8 - Solid as usual
Collins - 8 - Another good performance
Long - 8 - Did well again
Roberts - 6 - Didn't get us up the pitch as needed in a back 5
Cork - 5 - Never really got a grip of midfield
Brownhill - 5 - Overrun and couldn't settle
McNeil - 5 - Got to track Buendia for the goal, he can see him and has to get back in with him.
Cornet - 4 - Sorry but he was terrible today. Couldn't hold the ball, nver ran in behind, doesn't close down quick enough. Won the pen but has to offer more.
Barnes - 5 - Usual performance. Put himself around, but he shouldn't be starting for us.
Weghorst - 3 - Has to score. Looks frustrated
Lennon - 5 - Standard Lennon performance
The early goal in 2nd half killed us. We have to track thsy run.
Weghorst has to score that chance, no excuses

What exactly did WW do wrong?
Re: Aston Villa v Burnley - Player Ratings

I need to see it back but could he have elevated his shot into the roof of the net? He hit it low and gave Mings the slightest chance to make it

From TV - never do these but Nick Pope may have just kept us in the PL
Pope - 10
Roberts - 7
Collins - 8
Tarkowski - 8
Long - 7
Taylor - 7
McNeil - 6
Brownhiill - 6
Cork - 7
Cornet - 6
Barnes - 7 - that's how you take a penalty under pressure
Lennon - 6
Weghorst - 6 it's a great recovery by Mings but you would back Wood or Barnes to have finished that
Pope - 10
Roberts - 7
Collins - 8
Tarkowski - 8
Long - 7
Taylor - 7
McNeil - 6
Brownhiill - 6
Cork - 7

Re: Aston Villa v Burnley - Player Ratings
POPE 10 wow, if he’s not with us next season, we’ve been privileged to witness his performances for us
Roberts 7
Long 8 never lets us down, despite some posters moaning when we have to select him
Tarks 8 massive bonus having him back for last 2 games, there can be no doubting his commitment to the cause
Collins 8 what a signing, hopefully a future claret stalwart
Taylor 8 cutout the supply from his side on numerous occasions
McNeil 6 struggled to have an impact but put in the hard yards
Brownhill 6 put in a good shift
Cork 6 as above
Cornet 7 extra 1 for winning the pen
Barnes 7 cool as a cucumber for penalty, but lucky to not be punished for elbow
Great point, future back in our hands, just have to match dirty Leeds result on Sunday!

Did you watch the game? Failed to beat a defender in an open goal from 6-7 yards out.
Criminal at this level.
Re: Aston Villa v Burnley - Player Ratings
An earlier comment about our midfield was spot on. Not great at all but this 5 at the back
is so new to a side so used to 442 that I suppose its understandable.
I was really hoping Dwight was going to play a pivotal role
tonight but he didn't come to the party. If the midfield play like that on Sunday
we will need to rely on Brentford doing us a huge favour.
Will it be 5 at the back at home? I think we probably should tbh against Newcastle and hope
Dwight and Maxwell get their act together.

Weghorst 6 - Mings gets a lot of stick on this board but that was a match saving block.

Nick Pope must be one of the best goalkeepers in the history of the club. He was just magnificent.
Even though it was a fabulous block I still can’t get my head around how Wout has not scored. That miss may haunt him for the rest of his career.
Definitely a penalty for the handball ( check the straight on view as the left sleeve of Digne ruffles before hitting his chest/side )
Lowton yellow card at most. Won the ball cleanly then tried to get his foot out of the way before making contact with Chambers and that’s why it look worse because his foot was in the air
Onto Sunday.

Re: Aston Villa v Burnley - Player Ratings
Pope - 9 - a string of fine saves, even if he’d have expected to make all but one which was out of this world.
Roberts - 7 - culpable for the goal when he didn’t cover across quickly enough, and a bit hurried in possession at times, but defended stubbornly and desperately unlucky not to end up with a goal or an assist.
Taylor - 7 - looked a bit vulnerable against Cash but stuck at it manfully and got forward with decent delivery on occasions.
Collins - 9 - developing into a top class prospect.
Tarkowski - 9 - given how little he stretched for the ball I suspect he was playing when many would have cried off, and managing an injury. Or he might just be a bloody good defender who doesn’t need to extend himself. Either way he was imperious.
Long - 8 - thought he was the third centre half to do an outstanding job, even if Villa had occasional joy down his channel.
Cork - 8 - screened the back 4 expertly, although he was quiet in possession.
Brownhill - 7 - lots of energy but and did a lot of hard work without being at his best in possession.
McNeil - 7 - kept the ball when he got it, which wasn’t really often enough. But did work hard.
Cornet - 7 - won the penalty and gave us an outlet although he gave it away cheaply at times.
Barnes - 7 - nerves of steel with the penalty, and worked ferociously hard, although his general link play probably wasn’t as good as he’d have wanted it to be.
Weghorst - 7 - thought he retained the ball better then Barnes but that miss (or perhaps fairly, the block from Mings) will haunt him.
Lennon - 7 - scrapped away well.
Lowton - very unlucky.
Really good performance founded on 3 outstanding centre backs and a goalkeeper in fine form (even if the xG belies that they weren’t quite the string of point blank saves Sky would have us believe). Not sure the formation entirely worked - we struggled to put pressure on the ball in the middle of the park at times, and lacked the ability to get players around Barnes or Weghorst as often as we’d like to retain possession- but if we’d stayed switched on for the one moment just after half time, or been awarded a penalty the equal of the one given on Sunday, or not been denied by a black far more astonishing than any of Pope’s saves, we’d be sat here with 3 points and needing just the one on Sunday. But would we have taken this position a month ago? You bet.

The presence of the defender made sure it wasn’t, by definition, an open goal.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Thu May 19, 2022 10:55 pmDid you watch the game? Failed to beat a defender in an open goal from 6-7 yards out.
Criminal at this level.
Weghorst didn’t do much wrong. Hit it well, in the corner, but Mings did brilliantly.

Re: Aston Villa v Burnley - Player Ratings
Pope 10 - world class, England’s best keeper, one of the top 10 in the world for me, raises his game at the vital times.
Roberts 9 - they went down the other side mainly so credit to him and he nearly got the winner then the assist for it
Collins 7 - vitally lost Buendia by getting out of position when Tarky was about to look after his man who had made a run
Tarkowski 10 - one extra point for the desire when about to be out of contract and risking a torn hamstring. A legend, whatever happens.
Long 8 - again, we protected him, he didn’t have to turn, he was targeted by Watkins but just about got through it
Taylor 8 - got some vital blocks in despite most attacks coming down his side
Cork 8 - battled away and stopped their youngsters doing much
Brownhill 7 - as Cork but didn’t manage to break forward
McNeil 6 - not Dwight’s day, this formation didn’t help him in dangerous areas, need to take a risk and get him forward more
Cornet 7 - not much support but nearly got an assist then did win the penalty so did what was needed
Barnes 8 - roughed them up, legally, then kept his head to score, as I felt he would. He scores at key times. As we know.
Lennon 7 - helped out well
Lowton 7 - was robbed and now cannot play on Sunday if Tarky and Mee don’t make it. A shockingly bad decision to an honest, safe, tackle that was a yellow not red.
Weghorst 6 - the league is feeling a step too far for him but that’s temporary. It will come, but he should have scored by knowing he should have lifted it just in case the defender slid in, that’s experience at this level that’s lacking, it isn't Germany.
It felt like Jackson was saying we have all these top defenders (all internationals bar Taylor) so lets get them all on and see what we can do. That made it a bit limited up front but it worked. We should have won the game but hopefully have done enough already. 11 points from 7 games is a top return. That’s basically better than Man Utd over the season. But we need it to be 14. Let’s be honest, but for really bad misses from the otherwise good Cornet and Weghorst it would have been 15 points and safety which would then have been more PPG than Chelsea.

Re: Aston Villa v Burnley - Player Ratings
Pope 9 Just a great keeper
Roberts 6 did ok, though he was Lowton for a second and got sent off!
Taylor 7 had a tough time as their main threat came down his side. Largely kept them at bay but think he should start wider and tighter to the man with three central halves on the field.
Long 8 very harsh booking. Didn't look out of place.
Tarkowski 8 gonna be a big miss when he goes.
Collins 8 becoming very consistent.
Cork 7 did ok
Brownhill 7 as above. I do this a lot with our central midfield haha.
Mcneil 6. Should have gathered the ball better and been in on goal after the Barnes elbow incident. This went largely unnoticed.
Cornet 5 great turn for the pen but weak as always and I don't feel comfortable when he has the ball to feet.
Barnes 6 held his nerve great for the pen but didn't offer much more though we didnt have a lot of possession.
Weghorst 6 not a fan but probably unlucky with that chance.
Well I'd have bit your hand off for a point before the game. But the gods seem to want us down. Had we held out for ten minutes at the start of the second half we'd have won and put unbelievable pressure on Leeds (and I thought Everton for some time). The non penalty, the Weghorst chance blah blah blah. But like claretspice says, all we could have asked for a month ago was a shot going into the last game. How long is it til Sunday, 3 weeks?

Re: Aston Villa v Burnley - Player Ratings
Some surprisingly low marks for Taylor today.
He made countless blocks....i thought he had a great game.
Very happy with a point but we could've won it ......all the pressure is on Leeds now.

Pope 9*- Absolutely outstanding.
Roberts 7
Collins 8
Tarkowski 8
Long 8
Taylor 7
McNeil 5
Cork 8
Brownhill 7
Barnes 8- Out of luck at Tottenham but he 'got lucky' last night.
Cornet 5- I've given him 2 for gaining the penalty but didn't see much else. He needs to produce on Sunday.
Weghorst 6- It's not coming off at the moment but he can get into the right places and puts a shift in.
