Goodbye Nick Pope

Post by AwayClaret » Sun May 22, 2022 6:30 pm

Thanks for everything Nick. You have been outstanding. Cheers for the years with us . Same with Tarks and Mcneil. Nd some others. You'll always be clarets. Barnes might get another contract now.

Arguably the best keeper we've ever had.
Good luck to him in his future career.

Properly sad to have to lose a player and a professional like Nick Pope.

Arguably our greatest ever goal keeper.

Between Pope and Heaton we have been blessed the last few years. He, and Mercer, will be a huge loss and very hard to replace.
Thanks big Nick.

Nixon today said we want 40m for him whether we stay up or go down. I’d be surprised to see anyone pay 40m - not that I don’t think he’s worth it.

Hennessey will do a good job for us.

I hope Pope stays but appreciate his reasons if he decides he needs to move on. Same with Tarky and Dwight, Wout and Maxwel will also be considering their future given that both came to play PL football. Cornet has proven he can get goals but Wout hasn't really shown anyone his best - though I expect him to end up back in Holland.

Agree and probably more like £20m - £25m.

He's been absolutely brilliant for us.

Spurs, I reckon. I think he’s a top 3 PL keeper. Walking out of Villa last week every single fan was talking about how brilliant he is.

If Arsenal fork out the same for Ramsdale, I think we’d get that for Pope.

I guess the bigger clubs that would pay significant sums of money for a keeper probably wouldn't want him because of his only weakness.

Unfortunately it’s an absolute minimum requirement for a top club keeper to be very comfortable on the ball. I love Nick Pope but he is really lacking in that department.

Give me a shot stopper over being good in possession any day. Pope will win points for a team next season.

The problem is that we might try to hold out for 40m while the window moves on, because we are banking on getting that amount for him.

However, the other clubs will know that they can get him cheaper and that we will be looking to sell. After the Wood sale the other clubs know that our owners won't turn down cash offers when push comes to shove. With relegation, Popes contract running down, lower wages and a lot of questions about our future Pace probably can't avoid selling even if he wanted to. In fact he talked about the need to sell players, up or down, shortly before Dyche was sacked.

So the window will tick on, the better players will be signed while we refrain from doing deals until we know how much money we have to work with, and then we will be staring at the end of the window with a lot of work to do. At which point we will sell him cheaply, just like we will sell the others cheaply.

A relegated team with no money and lots of debt is a helpless feast for the carrion crows.

Pope has been immense for us and I would rather see him continue his career at the highest level. He deserves to do that if that is his choice.

Twaddle

The only reason we had a chance of avoiding relegation today is because of all the super human saves Pope has made in the last few weeks. His shop stopping was the difference between wins and losses. Those saves put points on the board this season, just like every season.

A keepers first duty is to stop the other teams scoring, just like it is a defenders first duty to do the same. Comfortable on the ball, better distribution clap trap. That is the sort of nonsense talk that has stopped Tarks getting more caps and prevented Mee from getting any.

And his biggest strength. Top clubs don't need a world class shot stopper as they don't allow many shots on goal. They'll make do with an average GK with good ball skills. I hope if he moves on he gets the England jersey, deserves nothing less. Great servant to the club and I'll always remember the passion, "We're not ******* dead yet!"

As awesome as Pope is, no top club is gonna sign him, then the clubd mid table and newly promoted arent going to spend that sort of a money on a goalkeeper.

He will be here next season. Also short summer may suit us on exits ending up staying

Pope is the best keeper I have ever seen in my 50 plus years watching Burnley. The word legend is thrown around now with such ease, but Nick really is.

Sadly Nick will have to depart in order to continue his international career. If Nick and McNeil are sold along with Cornet if someone triggers his release clause we should realise circa 80 million for the three of them. Not that bothered about Cornet leaving as he has been really poor lately. Pope and McNeil however will leave a massive void in the team.

I feared the worst when i saw him replace Heaton (was it against Palace). I didn't know anything about him and he just looked tall and gangly. Never expected in a million years that he'd be a step up from Heaton

I used to say Alan Stevenson was the best keeper I ever saw at Burnley, however the game has moved on a lot since then and keepers are far more athletic now. Therefore I would now say Nick is the best keeper we have had in my lifetime.

We have three really good keepers, one of whom is world class. It is probably a luxury to keep Sir Nick on that basis when we need the cash but no point selling for under £20m. He would command that in Jan and we would have 5 months more.

It doesn't matter that we are desperate to sell if more than one club wants him.

If it's just a negotiation between Burnley and (say) West Ham, then they would have us over a barrel. But if West Ham are competing with (say) Newcastle and Fulham, then they are in competition with each other and how anxious we are to sell becomes less of a factor.

If West Ham thinks Pope is worth only £20m, then why don't they up their price to £25m and make bids for Pickford, Ramsdale, or Henderson? If that's what they think the market for England squad goalkeepers is worth!

Madness, get your feelings about the last few games out of the way and actually look at his stats.

16th in the Premier League for goals per 90
Above players like Maddison, Mount, Foden, Toney, Raphina, Watkins, Pukki etc...

He'd tear up the Championship.

Be great to have you on the ride next year Nick but if you do go - all the best. You pulled out all the stops this season but sadly it wasn't enough in front of you.
