Possible team
1st game of season, possible team:
Peacock-Farrell
Roberts Collins Thomas/Long Taylor
McNeil Brownhill Westwood Costelloe
JRod Richardson
Not a bad starting base, younger fresher and good base for a rebuild.
Players not included will of paid the debt off and huge wages off the bill

All depends on who the manager is and what system they choose to play. But yeah would be nice to see some of the 23s pushed through into the first team like Richardson, Dodgson, Thomas, Costelloe and Helm.

We signed no one?
Re: Possible team
Massive disrespect to the championship if you think that team will trouble the top half. We are bang in trouble and I fear for our future. The owners, I fear, pinned everything on staying up.

I’ve no idea how good that Costello lad is but it doesn’t inspire much confidence that the under 23 boss didn’t fancy him when we needed a goal.

Should be an aim. Although a good new cm would be nice as well. That is assuming we sell Cornet under release clause and pope won’t want to resign so we should cash in as we have a good backup. Mee resigning would be crucial for an experienced professional. Despite our dodgy looking squad for next season, we do have a decent platform for whoever comes in to buy some young attacking talent.
Also, despite the loan repayment, we do have £50m in the bank which would go a very long way to sorting that out. And then there is the issue of whether Burnley as a football club actually owes the money, as from what I have seen it looks like the holdings company.
We will see…

Re: Possible team
Being realistic Cornet 17.5m and Pope 20m will.most likely be sold, possibly McNeil or Brownhill. Plus 30m parachute payments.
And 14000 season tickets sold we should be fine for 1/2 seasons in the Championship..
Pruning the squad of older players will further reduce the wage bill. Meaning we will have money to spend on young talent with some free transfers or European talent.
Hennessey/BPF
Lowton/Roberts
Taylor/NEW
Mee?/Collins/Long/NEW or is Thomas ready
Brownhill/Cork/NEW
McNeil/NEW/NEW
Wout/Rodriquez/NEW
For me 6 new signings at least!

Re: Possible team
McNeil is way too good for the Championship. Something along the lines of
Hennessey
Roberts. Collins. Mee. Taylor
NEW. Brownhill. NEW. NEW.
Jay Rod. Weghorst.
I'd be happy enough with that, if we can get some youth and creativity into our midfield.

Pope and Tarks will go with my best wishes. Cornet will want out. Barnes, Cork, Lennon, Bardsley, Westwood, Stephens, JBG etc. should be gone. I just wish we hadn’t shown some daft sentiment to Jay Rod, because he’s been nowhere near good enough for a new contract either.

Re: Possible team
That isn't how it works. If we did get 17.5m for Cornet then we probably wouldn't bank 17.5m, because i doubt that we paid his full transfer fee up front.
His transfer fee is probably spread across the duration of his contract so we might have only paid 3m of what we owe to Lyon.
If that speculation is correct we would get 17.5m minus what we still owe to Lyon and the small profit we might make will be measured next to the sign on fee and agent fee that we probably had to pay up front.
The same will be true for Weghorst and Collins.

Re: Possible team
Agree it’s a poor record but I’d bet his xA (expected assists) is quite high. I can remember several balls he put on plates that didn’t get finished. Scouts won’t just look at assists. For example I think he’s only behind ASM for the most dribbles in the league.
Re: Possible team
Second most completed dribbles in the league. Is an excellent crosser of a ball. Has the ability to pick out long range passes. All of this within a rigid defensive 4-4-2 framework with a crap centre midfield and zero technical strikers around him.PremierLeagueClass wrote: ↑Sun May 22, 2022 8:45 pmHe can’t shoot, hasn’t got any pace, hasn’t got a right foot, poor decision making at times. Whilst he’s clearly got talent he is extremely limited.

Re: Possible team
We all need a bit of a lift and a bit of hope, so to a degree forward thinking will help, because the media take is that we are shafted.
For me the crucial thing is to preserve a good back five. Keeping Mee feels important. He will be a benchwarmer at best in the PL. Then we keep PCF, Collins, Roberts and Taylor (they don’t all get to leave even if they want to). That’s a strong goalie / defence.
We make the money we need further upfield, selling McNeil, Cornet, Weghorst to add to Pope (assuming the middle two won’t want to stay with a release clause). We try to spend about £20m to fill some of those remaining slots. With Jay, JBG, Brownhill that could be the bones of a reasonable side.
It will be the owner’s task to find that £20m with renegotiations of this or that. That is vital. We can’t afford to just sell and not spend.

First thing I’d be doing if I was Pace would be getting Mee to sign with a view to him progressing on the coaching side alongside playing. Mee and Collins would be an immense pairing for next year. I think a centre midfield pairing of Brownhill and Cork (I’d give him a new contract in the position we are in now) is good enough for the Championship.
I’m hoping Weghorst can do the business next year alongside Jay.
Slightly worried Brownhill may be one of the players who moves on, along with the more obvious ones of Pope, Cornet and McNeill.
It is a big rebuild, and it’s going to be hard on a shoestring, but Pace will be absolutely desperate to get back up. We’ve got to hope he’s got some aces up his sleeve… however unlikely it may be.
Re: Possible team
They’re both past it and will be on relatively big wages. I’d rather we didn’t go down the route of signing on pensioners again, even though it looks like we haven’t learnt our lesson with Rodriguez.Indecisive wrote: ↑Sun May 22, 2022 9:19 pmCork should be gone and Jay Rod is nowhere near good enough for a new contract? Fill any NEW spots with u23s if any deemed good enough for Championship football.
One hell of a rebuild needed and absolutely vital we appoint the right manager. Surely the strategy now has to be buy/sign young and sell for profit. Still a hell of a lot of experience in my squad above so not necessarily an immediate requirement imo.

Re: Possible team
Huddersfield Town in the Play Offs with a squad assembled at around 3m.
Luton Town made Play Offs with a 1.5m squad.
Huddersfield model 4 loan signings, 13 Free Transfers, 4 Academy Players and 7 players were signed on a transfer fee.
Hence why the choice of manager now is so important.. Championship experience, contacts in the Prem for loan players and ability to work on a small budget.
So suddenly Farke looks a decent shout, especially as no compo. Rooney not sure but has good contacts for loan players. Can't see either Cooper or Coberan leaving.

Re: Possible team
No idea predicting a team for next season, but I will reiterate what I said after the Brentford defeat. We have to use relegation as an opportunity . The squad is far too old, too slow, too immobile. The players have given us everything over the years, but the well has been empty for a while, for many players. The championship may not have the techniques of the prem, but for the most they are fast and direct.
We need a new midfield, and if there is any money to spend that is where it should go.
A big question still to be answered, is how many players we lose that we would rather we kept. Only time will tell.
