Wout Weghorst
Hope he stays. Some will disagree but I believe he can smash 30 in the championship next season.

He’s been a flop in the Premier League, but so was Mitrovic really. I’d be keen to keep him for this league.

Re: Wout Weghorst
Feel like he’s a lot better with the ball into his feet. I can see him being tricky in the championship. A couple of early goals maybe needed to get his confidence up. Pretty sure it’s not gone how he envisaged so far so hopefully he’s desperate to prove himself.

Re: Wout Weghorst
Interestingly his xG for the 20 games he played was 5.4 (so performing way worse than his xG)
I think there’s a good footballer in there but he needs to adjust to the English leagues.
Was a shame that Jay then Vydra got injured because I feel that they combined the best with Wout

Re: Wout Weghorst
Absolutely this. We played our best football with Wout & Jay up front. They looked a handful and we looked a real PL team. He also looked pretty decent alongside Vyds too. I would also say that in all the recent games he didn’t start, we looked better when he came on.CoolClaret wrote: ↑Tue May 24, 2022 8:02 amInterestingly his xG for the 20 games he played was 5.4 (so performing way worse than his xG)

I’d perhaps go as far to say that had Barnes not been brought back in to the side, we might’ve stayed up.
It didn’t quite work out for him in front of goal; but for being inches away vs Newcastle and a superb Mings block, he’d have kept us up from the subs bench.
He’d tear the Championship apart so I very much hope he stays.

Averages 1-4 based on apps and 1-3 based on minutes played.
Slightly different to Wouts

No I won’t stop saying it, Mitrovic has thus far flopped in the Premier League.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Tue May 24, 2022 8:18 amCan we please stop saying this it’s just not accurate at all.

He got three goals in 27 league games (a lot of which he was sub from, due to being dropped by relegation fighting Fulham as he was not scoring goals) on his last jaunt in the Premier League. You’re only as good as your last season.
In any case, it’s largely irrelevant to the case of Weghorst as they’re very different players physically (Mitrovic has a lot more of the qualities that would likely make you succeed in the Championship than Weghorst). I only bring it up as Mitrovic went from scoring 3 goals in 27 league games (FLOPPED) to 43 goals in 44 league games.

Re: Wout Weghorst
Adjust or not, he recently missed two golden opportunities which may have kept us up.
I had high hopes for him but it's clearly not come for him this season.
We'll see what happens, I guess.

No pace, no strength, decent feet, can’t finish his tea. Him and Vydra up top would provide a solid worst miss competition at the end of the season.

Re: Wout Weghorst
In fairness Mitrovic did score 11 goals in a poor Fulham side that went down in 18/19, so it's not like he's been a complete dud at that level.jedi_master wrote: ↑Tue May 24, 2022 8:25 amNo I won’t stop saying it, Mitrovic has thus far flopped in the Premier League.

He's also scored a lot of goals in the Championship playing in strong sides that have won promotion. I'm not sure Weghorst will be playing in such a side next season, but here's hoping.
Re: Wout Weghorst
I think he's a decent player who has struggled a bit to adapt to the Premier League pace, and clearly lost confidence with lack of service. If he stays and providing we improve our creativeness, I can see him scoring a decent amount of goals in the Championship. Probably needs some alongside him with pace and good movement.

Only 5 strikers in the premier league had a worst finishing rate than Weghorst this season (plus he’s the only striker in the top 10 of that list that signed in January).TheOriginalLongsider wrote: ↑Tue May 24, 2022 8:55 amHe’s a Dutch international! But yes let’s blame the service
Re: Wout Weghorst
There’s no way on earth he would get 30 in the Champ. Fanciful stuff. I don’t think he’d get 20. He may have more time on the ball in the Champ but as mentioned above the physicality would be too much for him. He also still had no pace and can’t head.

You think that we utilised him in the right way?
Signing a player then refusing to play to his strengths (to the extent we bring in a finished Barnes to be exactly like he's been for the past three seasons) isn't his fault
I'm not sure if he thrive in the championship, but I think he's got more chance if utilise him correctly for starters
Re: Wout Weghorst
Bundesliga is a high intensity, relatively physical league to be fair.

Re: Wout Weghorst
Some people seem to be surprised that a side that is pretty much always one of the lowest scorers in the league has strikers who score less than strikers at clubs who score more.
Re: Wout Weghorst
Despite comment above I still think he could do a job for us in the Champ and would score some goals. Think he may go back abroad though.

Slower than Gifton, gets eased off the ball by people half his size, misses sitters, strops in public when subbed and hardly ever wins a header, which is incredible. But what, he turned Harry Maguire once? Get rid if at all possible.

I don’t think it was great but he had more than enough opportunities to show us his goal scoring ability.Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Tue May 24, 2022 9:03 amYou think the service to him was, what?, pretty good?

Like I said. Only five starters in the league had a worst conversation rate (funnily enough one of them was Rodriguez).
I think he will perform better in the championship but highly doubt he will get anywhere near 20 goals. Probably ten goals and a few assists.
I’ve said it for a while, he’s likely going to end up on loan either in turkey or the Netherlands. I doubt we want his wages on the books.

I can see him off to Holland.

Possibly, but I'm not sure. If he'll stay and if nobody wants to shell out serious money for him, then I'd like to see how he fares in the Championship. You never know.

I wasn't keen when we signed him, but he looks like he could be more than useful, but only if we utilise him correctly

Re: Wout Weghorst
Reminds me a bit of Rouwen Hennings in that he lacks the strength & pace to play in English football.
Re: Wout Weghorst
Yeah, but potentially with the right conditioning and a full pre-season, he might be able to adapt next year? He certainly needs to bulk up, so he can fit into the robust nature of the championship

Re: Wout Weghorst
I hope he stays. He wasn't exactly put in a situation to be successful. We've struggled for goals for a while and that is largely down to our midfield. Yes, Weghorst should have done better with some of his chances but he was playing in a poor side while still getting used to the PL. Not exactly ideal. Some new additions in midfield and a manager who knows how to play to his strengths on a consistent basis could see him do well in the Championship. An early goal next season would probably work wonders for his confidence as well. We'll see!

Re: Wout Weghorst
If WW gets the right partner and service I have a feeling he'd be ok in the Championship. I like his passion and determination. Saying that if there's a release clause or no reduced Championship wage then given our situation that could be an issue.
Re: Wout Weghorst
play him upfront on his own and get runners around him, playing him with static pretty poor strikers like Barnes and Rodriguez was never gonna be productive.

Re: Wout Weghorst
I found it puzzling to say the least that WW looked like the missing link when he first arrived, then we suddenly stopped playing to his strengths. Still do not understand how we lost him in our setup so quickly, it was no surprise to see him benched, he looked awful. Potential for a great season if he stays and a manager who knows how he works gets a grip of the team.

Re: Wout Weghorst
There was an interesting quote in The Athletic about Wout:
"The Dutch striker is an intense character, driven and constantly putting in extra work, searching for improvement, including sending late-night messages to team-mates with thoughts on how they could improve."
I assume "they" refers to the team as a whole. I hope he wasn't messaging Popey telling him how to improve his positioning

Re: Wout Weghorst
Wout came to play in the premier league. I'd be extremely surprised if he didn't do back to Germany now.
Re: Wout Weghorst
I think the Championship is a bit more rough and tumble, I’m not sure he could cope with it to be honest.
