Cornet linked to Spurs
As part of their £150m spending spree, Spurs hope to bag Max for a knockdown fee due to his release clause.
Be sad to see him go, but sadly not a surprise in the circumstances.

Re: Cornet linked to Spurs
Be a great move for him. Suggestions are Conte likes his versatility. He wants a few wing backs but also knows he can play a bit more advanced if needed.

Re: Cornet linked to Spurs
May have gone for £40m had we stayed up. Just adds to the cost of relegation, opportunity cost has to be factored in which is compared to the cost we would have experienced. That also adds to potential “losses” in a legal claim sense though, not just TV money.
Off topic, but I’d like a sticky thread for transfers discussions in and another for transfer discussions out. There will be so many threads started about all our players or incoming ones. Its hard to keep track, especially if we give ourselves a break for a week or two.

He’d be great at Spurs . I’d hope we can get maybe 25m for him , we’d have been relegated by Feb without him .

He’s nowhere near top four quality, but then again £17.5m is nothing for some clubs.

Re: Cornet linked to Spurs
I’d be genuinely surprised if he attracted interest from a club like Spurs who have got into the Champions League. I agree with Rileybobs, I don’t think he’s anywhere near that level.

funnily enough I’d just read the Athletic article quoting that . Talk about a bargain . Same article also quotes that Cornet thought it was a loan deal at Burnley . Though whether he’d get serious regular game time at a big club it’s hard to say .

Didn't he get 10 premier league goals in a poor side?
I don't think he's Spurs level either, but he's certainly done enough (especially with his age) to attract attention I'd have thought

Champions League qualifying Spurs interested in player available at a knockdown price who's got Champions League experience.
Not really a shock, especially as he can play in a range of positions, has experience of PL football and has shown he can find the net in the PL and CL.
Would suggest they don't have a massive amount of faith in someone like Sessegnon.

He also has Champions League experience with Lyon, even scoring a few goals.
Decent price for a squad player who could come in handy with all the extra games / rotation etc.

Re: Cornet linked to Spurs
9 goals 2 assists, pretty decent to say he’s also been played in a system that doesn’t play to his strengths. Not convinced he’s Spurs quality but he does have Champs League experience and Conte might use him as a very attacking left wing back.Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Wed May 25, 2022 9:49 amDidn't he get 10 premier league goals in a poor side?

There was an article/joke written on twitter saying Michael Jackson had told Cornet “you are not alone”.AlargeClaret wrote: ↑Wed May 25, 2022 9:46 amfunnily enough I’d just read the Athletic article quoting that . If the Athletic are picking up on that as a serious suggestion it tells you more about the quality of their journalism than anything else!!
As for Cornet, Spurs would be a great move for him but the article I read was very much “considering” - i.e. heavily caveated. Wherever he goes I hope it’s not to start on the bench. He’s too good for that.
Re: Cornet linked to Spurs
Minutes per goal is actually 197 so near enough 1 in 2. With the two assists that’s likely 1 in 2 for goal contributions. Quite impressive, as you say, especially considering his AFCON trip, injuries, New league and poor team.

Agree with the comments about him not being up to Spurs standard.
I see him at Southampton/Villa/Palace level.
Can't see him staying though.

I wonder what he thought his huge signing on fee was for….
Re: Cornet linked to Spurs
I think he'll want to stay for a year, he came out a few months ago and said he really enjoys playing further forward, if he goes to Spurs he's back at wing back or on the bench.

Re: Cornet linked to Spurs
We wont know how good he is until he plays for a better team. I guess at 197 minutes per goal he will be as good or better than Harry Kane this season, and H plays for a team who's only reason to exist is to put chances on a plate for England's best player
Re: Cornet linked to Spurs
Whoever signs him needs to toughen him up a bit. Can’t argue with his goals record but he is lightweight.

Re: Cornet linked to Spurs
It's a strange one with Cornet, he's easily been our top scorer, and without his goals we'd have been sunk long before the final day, but for some reason he never seems to have fully settled at Burnley, or found his best position on a constant basis. Not all his fault, but he's lacked something since his ACON stint, and he's also picked up some niggling injuries, pity as if he'd played a few more games he might have just made the difference between us dropping and not.
TBF with our lack of creative midfielders any of our strikers would struggle particularly in the PL, and this urgently needs addressing in this window, but I feel I and others have been beating this drum for 2/3 years now. and apart from Brownhill we haven't recruited in this essential position, and ultimately it's cost us big time when it mattered.

Sorry i'm in the 'don't rate' camp. If we could get £17.5m I'd be delighted.
Re: Cornet linked to Spurs
Agree with this. And Brownhill dropping down to the Championship will be back to his true level. He has looked out of his depth this season in many PL games.tiger76 wrote: ↑Wed May 25, 2022 10:42 amIt's a strange one with Cornet, he's easily been our top scorer, and without his goals we'd have been sunk long before the final day, but for some reason he never seems to have fully settled at Burnley, or found his best position on a constant basis. Re: Cornet linked to Spurs
The team 1-11 is poor creatively, Taylor literally refused to get forward in some games. The whole team, formation, style of play needs a complete reset.tiger76 wrote: ↑Wed May 25, 2022 10:42 amIt's a strange one with Cornet, he's easily been our top scorer, and without his goals we'd have been sunk long before the final day, but for some reason he never seems to have fully settled at Burnley, or found his best position on a constant basis. Re: Cornet linked to Spurs
Yes that's true, but it's also a mindset amongst our players, and they've shown on the few occasions when the shackles have been released that they can create.
For example someone like Roberts should be a top performer in the Champ, certainly if he replicates his Swansea form, and there's no reason why he shouldn't now he's had a season to settle, and is hopefully over his early injuries.
Dwight is another who if we can keep him should shine in the Championship.
This is why any new manager needs to give them the belief that they are decent players, especially at Championship level.

Re: Cornet linked to Spurs
He's versatile, a good age and has netted 9 goals for a poor side without playing anywhere near all the games. At £17.5m he will have the pick of many sides in the lower half I'd think.
He's not a great footballer, but he's certainly got good movement, pace and can finish.

Re: Cornet linked to Spurs
Squad depth is a thing. They've been playing Sessegnon as a LWB and Cornet would be an option there, as well as cover for Son in attack. I think it makes sense for them to add versatile options for a relatively low fee. He'd probably be better going to a more middly club and playing more often but Spurs could actually be a great move for him as Conte would get him super fit.
There's no doubt he is inconsistent and a bit lightweight but his record is good considering it was an injury-affected season interrupted by AFCON. Anyone who doesn't think a guy who scored one in three for a poor team in his first PL season will have lots of offers is in cloud cuckoo land.

Re: Cornet linked to Spurs
Probably not good enough to start regularly for Spurs but they will be hoping to play a lot of games next season so £17.5m for a squad option is a bargain. Conte is the master at developing wing backs, pivotal to his preferred system, and Cornet would be a decent option all things considered although not so sure about him defensively.

With the goals he got in the premier league he would likely bag 20 plus for us in the championship…. However he’s off isn’t he.
He’s a snip at £17.5 in the current market.

Re: Cornet linked to Spurs
It depends what you like in a player he hasn't dominated matches like some top players but he has scored a lot of goals by our standards, and stood out a mile for his movement in good positions. Earned our two penalties this season.
Should have had 5 more goals at least, the pen, bad miss at Norwich, 3 one on ones.
A player you would certainly take a chance on.
On the other end of the spectrum we had Dwight who did influence play and I do like a lot, but no goals and one assist.

Top quality player with natural attacking ability who will improve and should become more consistent. I’m always more optimistic/excited when he’s in our starting 11 (that’s what football is about after all).
We should be doing everything we can to persuade him to stay.

Re: Cornet linked to Spurs
Been a great guy and done very well with what he has done. 9 goals in 25 Pl games is a sign of his class. He’s adored by the fans and he seems to really enjoy that as he was hated by Lyon fans due to him braking into the scene as a world beater but never being able to live up to that.
He’s got all the attributes to be a very good player. He’s quick, great movement and has two excellent feet. I’ve not seen such a two footed player at Burnley for years. Obviously good technical ability as well as he’s shown with his corners being by far our best corner taker this season.
He’s never quite found his ideal position and we’ve not quite worked out how to use him best, which is why it’s sad he can’t go and bag 25 in the championship next season, but he’s done well for us and will do well for himself with a good move.
He could have fetched a lot more than £17.5m but we can’t complain as someone like him doesn’t normally play in the champ.

He should stay and play up front for us, bang in 20 goals next season easy.
If he goes to Spurs hes going to be an impact sub or playing out of position in defence where he probably doesnt want to play. Needs to think long term and stay where he is the main man.
