Banana skin games next season

Post by Woodleyclaret » Thu May 26, 2022 8:06 am

I feel we will win promotion but there are potential banana skin games we could struggle with
My 5 are here. Wigan A , Sheff Utd A, Millwall H ,
PNE H, and Sheff Wed A
Any thoughts ?

If we are classing Sheff Weds as a banana skin game then I am going to put Swindon (h) Ipswich (a) and Peterboro (a) to your list

The division is absolutely rammed with big and potentially VERY big teams. I know some of them are underfunded and underperforming right now, but almost anyone could suddenly come good (like Forest have).

Swindon done the reverse of 1990 and been promoted 2 divisions after losing playoff as opposed to winning playoff and being relegated 2 divisions...?

We’ll go in to every game as favourites on paper in my view, so that makes all of them banana skins.

Just need to keep it tight, as we’ve managed to do in the Prem so no reason why we can’t in the championship, then create going forward.

A couple of pacy forward players & defour-type in midfield and we’ll be fine.

Banana skin games are usually when you slip up on what should be technically an easy game. I dont think we're gonna be near the top so I don't really see this as something we need to worry about.

If things go badly we could end up the banana skin game for some of the better teams in the division

If thats aimed at me then I dont know whats controversial about thinking we are not going to be one of the top 6 teams next season.

All this talk about being everybody's cup final, every team wanting to beat us, banana skin games etc stinks of arrogance and exactly the sort of attitude people on here just to bemoan when Premier League fans spoke about Burnley in that way.

Come on Zlatan, you're far too sensitive about Burnley to try and get involved in stuff like this. Stick to watching back old games with a stopwatch and conspiracy theories around the Premier League and Refs hating Burnley as that seems more your comfort zone

Potentially any of them, and as stated we'll now be considered a big fish in a small pond, so others will relish taking us down.

Also lots of derbies, which by their nature can be unpredictable.

Ideally we'll avoid the newly promoted teams in the early weeks, as often they thrive on the momentum of promotion, and that alone makes them dangerous, Wigan being a case in point, they are used to winning games whereas we are not.

DA - stick to watching Leeds, after all they're still in the top flight (for now)

If the Premier league wasn't awash with.money and so called glamour players and managers from around the world brought in to beat the likes of Burnley with ridiculous kick off times suited solely for foreign tv then looking at the fixtures, traditional kick off times and potential winning promotion to the afore mentioned Premier league it isn't that bad, just a shame we haven't a war chest.

You are correct. We slipped up badly on our 2 banana skins against Leeds last season and got relegated.

It may be tough but to be honest the last 2 times we played in the championship we managed to lose a whole 10 games out of 92. We made it look pretty easy tbh. I’m not sure the standard has improved but as we are in transition it may give one or 2 other teams a squeak.

For context Fulham have lost as many games this season as we did in 2 seasons.

As for banana skin games Millwall home is always one of those, as are all the local derbies. We’ll definitely be seen as a big fish in a smaller pond after 6 prem seasons.

Yes but now the reality of Sunday has sunk in, can't we feel a bit excited because whilst there's some physical teams and the Championship is without doubt tough, we might see some great games home and away. Let's face it apart from MJ digging out blind to save us, we haven't had much to smile about this season.

The Championship is 46 banana skins, truly one of the most competitive leagues in world football imo.

One advantage of dropping to the Championship is we now have a genuine chance of lifting silverware, and let's be realistic that was never going to happen while we were in the Prem.

Get a few wins on the board early and have the rest of the division fearing facing us, apart from Norwich, and possibly Watford, we certainly shouldn't fear anyone, as long we keep the bulk of our squad intact, and Kompany (assuming it's him) makes some shrewd signings.
