Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
It's some time ago that I posted that he'd made a significant appearance in the team, it took him past the threshold for games which meant he had triggered the clause.
Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
Good news this. We need his battling qualities.

Surprised.....and a little disappointed by this. I get that he has good experience etc but we really need to freshen up the whole squad and a refresh of the forwards has been needed for ages. This seemed like a good opportunity to do that and not renew his contract.

Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
The Championship is a slog and we'll need characters like Jay and Barnes next season
If as expected Wout and Maxwell leave then, there has to be some serious thought about a first choice forward coming in as replacement for them rather than looking at the old guard (including Vydra at some stage) to win us promotion.

Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
Weghorst might as well have played so not to trigger it then. He didn't contribute anything.
Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
Does that mean it was entirely his decision?

Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
I can't say I'm thrilled by this news. Even in the championship we need better than a player who just constantly looks for free kicks and falls over whenever he's challenged.
I would hope he'll be a bit part player, just as he has been in the last season or two.

If the Cork trigger is the same number of games then he's entitled to another year should he choose to stay.

Believe so, although I suppose the club could have made it awkward for him.

Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
Cannot blame Barnes at all for taking the option, he was probably thinking of dropping into the Championship this summer; with us he can now show what he has to offer in the league without the upheaval of moving clubs. Ash clearly feels at home at Burnley and few would doubt his commitment to the club.
Hope he has a great ‘final’ season with us, and can find the form that challenges for the starting shirt. Not at all disappointed with this.

Im sure the club will release all of this once they have got the manager announced. If I was them I would be prioritising that. Imagine the headlines in the media and meltdown with fans when they say most of the players are being released.

Out of interest, what options does a club have if a clause is triggered but the player isn't wanted?
Pay up his contract and let him go? Or hope to sell or loan him out?

Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
so contextual to the thread on "to communicate or not communicate" then this is news and should be announced. It is an isolated piece of news - it's a contractual obligation, and its topic needn't open doors to any other topic. It doesn't need to be attributed to any individual, such as Pace, it can simply be put out by the club
Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
Same as any other contracted player who is unwanted I suppose.
I don't think we needed to keep both Barnes and Rodriguez. I doubt the solution to a team that struggled for goals is two strikers who struggle for goals, so hopefully they will be cover/rotation options. Jay got a lot in the Champ for WBA a few years back but Barnes has never been particularly prolific.

Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
Disappointing for me. Treading water for a long time and can be a liability at times. Should have gone at Villa for a wreckless challenge. Cumbersome and predictable now but perhaps that's the type of team we will put out next season.

You mean the one when he never looked and didn't know the player was behind him. Never, ever a red card. Seems some want to label him now sadly.

Even Ronaldo commented when Barnes did this. Great technique when he puts his mind to it.

Yes, that's the one. We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. He knew exactly where Mings was. Like yourself probably, I've seen it a number of times and never wavered from what I thought initially.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Jun 08, 2022 2:55 pmYou mean the one when he never looked and didn't know the player was behind him. Clearly Barnes is like Marmite if the posts are anything to go by
Personally, I hate the stuff
A backward step for me
Started 8 games with 15 as a sub (not sure if used in all of those 15 stated)
Not much of a playing target to get a clause activated !

If he knew where he was then he must be like one of my old schoolteachers who always said he had eyes in the back of his head.Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 08, 2022 3:01 pmYes, that's the one. Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
25 games in total, 23 in the league with 8 starts and 15 sub appearances as you said. But unavailable for a long period of the season with injury, didn't appear at all from mid-October to early Feb.
Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
For me its a good move. These commentators saying we need to freshen up and this is a bad move. I waould ask where do they think the money would come from to freshen up?

Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
I would've preferred to replace him, but we've got a big rebuild job on our hands as it is and he can be replaced next summer instead, along with Jay if we come straight back up.
One less position for a manager to worry about and at least we know Barnes will put a shift in, especially if he's got over his injury issues

Barnes is fine for the bench as long as he stays on it.

At least the pile of ready cash in the bank didn't need touching for this deal
Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
Not overly thrilled with this. Assuming the new manager wants to rebuild with younger, more athletic, technically better players I don't see how he fits in.

Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
If it is the players choice to stay or go after the option is triggered in his contract seems a bit silly to complain at the club signing him.
Course we could all say the club should just bin him off due to not wanting him, but then also complain at the lack of loyalty from any player we would like to keep but they move on like Tarks.

Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
Although he puts himself about, he is nowhere near prolific enough for what we are going to need this season.
Depending on what his wages are, assuming it's still significant from our time in the Prem, then the wages might have been best spendt elsewhere. That said if a trigger was hit and he chose to stay then not a lot can be done I suppose. We already have Jay and Vyds.

Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
If Kompany finally comes in, I can see him shipping Barnes out on loan.
I can't imagine he's the style of player that Kompany would want as he rebuilds a young (and hopefully slicker) team.
I expect he would find Rodriguez much more to his liking despite lack of pace.
