Re: Glastonbury 2022
Also it may be my memory but this thread seems a lot shorter than previous years, whether that is an indication of the acts on show are indifference I’m not sure, it does appear to be missing something this year , but that may just be me and my age
Re: Glastonbury 2022
If anyone is curious about the genre and hasn't dipped their toe in, specifically the UK scene boatshed bill mentions (which sounds nothing like the elevator music you have in your mind when a lot of people think of jazz), I'd recommend as a great entry point literally anything by Shabaka Hutchings (Sons Of Kemet, The Comet Is Coming), Moses Boyd, GoGo Penguin, Ishmael Ensemble, Ezra Collective, Portico Quartet, and if you can, try to watch it on YouTube, rather than just listening on Spotify, because jazz makes more sense when you see it played, trust me. You want to see the interaction happening.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Sat Jun 25, 2022 10:38 pmThe modern jazz scene in the UK is going really well, with some fantastic new bands and inovative music.
I love it!

Absolutely thisClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Jun 25, 2022 10:03 pmAt 70 I suppose I could be considered a stick in the mud. I love the Stones and currently watching Noel Gallagher and enjoying it, but it’s the sort of music I was brought up on to an extent. I’m also looking forward to Diana Ross tomorrow.
But I never criticise anyone’s choice of music. If there’s something I don’t like then I don’t watch or listen. It’s such a personal choice but I never rule anything out because it’s new.
Music wise, I always believe you shouldn’t allow yourself to get stuck in the past but also never allow yourself to forget the past either.

My dads watched some of the best, went to watch Diana Ross last week and said it was the greatest thing he’s ever seen. We went to see Frankie Valli the other year at his age, and I left gob smacked… that’s why they’re legends of the gameClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Jun 25, 2022 10:03 pmAt 70 I suppose I could be considered a stick in the mud. I saw Frankie Valli over 50 years ago but saw Diana Ross in 1994, went with some work colleagues. She was brilliant that night.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Sat Jun 25, 2022 11:07 pmMy dads watched some of the best, went to watch Diana Ross last week and said it was the greatest thing he’s ever seen. I'm really enjoying Macca tbh, he looks bloody fantastic for 80 too.
I have a feeling this could be his last full length live performance, he just seems to be throwing everything at it
Fair play to him

Soon as I hear the first chords of 'The Long and Boring Song' that's me gone.
Absolutely love that he had the guts to play 'Let em in', but should have been accompanied on screen by that unforgettable Pan's People interpretation.

I wholeheartedly agree, Tony. Without the past, there would be no now. My comments were aimed at those who were sneering at today's music and new bands like Dry Cleaning while crassly juxtaposing them with the Stones. Like I said upthread, my mum and dad go to watch up and comings bands, yet my dad's favourite album is Marquee Moon and I reckon my mum would say it's Ziggy Stardust, but get them on about Sleaford Mods, and you'll never shut them up.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Jun 25, 2022 10:03 pmMusic wise, I always believe you shouldn’t allow yourself to get stuck in the past but also never allow yourself to forget the past either.

I'm exactly the same as your mum and dad. I still find real excitement in discovering new bands and hopefully watching them grow from Trades Club size venues to much much bigger things, but a lot of my favourite albums come from the 60s & 70sBilly Balfour wrote: ↑Sat Jun 25, 2022 11:31 pmI wholeheartedly agree, Tony. I have loved the Beatles all my life and still listen to their music all the time. I was a bit worried about the show tonight because I thought Paul may not be up to rock and rolling at the grand old age of 80, but I have to say I am enjoying this performance.
Re: Glastonbury 2022
Such boring music, not my cup of tea at all. No idea why they book ancient bands to perform to a younger crowd. Bring out Drake or something, the crowds sleeping.

It appeases the wealthier, older audience which constitutes a large proportion of the crowd there nowadays.
I know people who've been regulars since the 1970 festival

Lots of cultures respect the wisdom and talent of their elders, that is so the right thing to do, Paul McCartney is so talented it is a pleasure and honour to listen to a musical icon and legend.

Or Maxwell's Silver Hammer? I'm joking. I love most of White Album, and Blackbird is one of the standout tracks.
Re: Glastonbury 2022
The Beatles aren't my cup of tea but are legendary and likely changed music forever. The Beatles should've been retired when Lennon died. I'm never a fan of bands splitting and individual members desperately trying to keep the sound going by themselves. Same thing with the Gallagher brothers, hang it up if Oasis is done.BabylonClaret wrote: ↑Sat Jun 25, 2022 11:41 pmFair enough but this guy changed pop music full stop. I'm not into music biographies, and I struggle to read them in full, but One Two Three Four: The Beatles in Time by Craig Brown is well worth reading. It's so interesting, even on a purely historical level, and there's not a boring page in the 500 or so pages. Honestly, it is a captivating read, and you won't be disappointed.
