Team v Huddersfield
Team v Huddersfield
Well, we are on the one week countdown now - exciting.
Of course a few question marks still remain, but I think it’s safe to assume the starting 11 will come from what’s here right now.
I’m going to list what I think will be the 11, using the 4-2-2-2 system that’s been used in pre season.
BPF
Roberts
McNally
Harwood Bellis
Taylor
Cullen
Cork
McNeil
Brownhill
Cornet
Rodriguez
Main question marks: Twine hasn’t trained all week and missed Shrewsbury so I’ve left him out. Cornet hasn’t played a min of pre season friendlies so it will be interesting to see what happens there, for example if he plays tomorrow v Newc. Centre back pairing tough to decide…

I'm not convinced McNally will start, doesn't look ready to me.

Who would you pair with THB then?eastcoastclaret wrote: ↑Fri Jul 22, 2022 6:55 amI'm not convinced McNally will start, doesn't look ready to me.
Sounds like both Thomas and Egan-Riley impressed against Shrews.
I just went with McNally as he’s arguably got the most experience out of them, albeit in League One.

Your team hopefully RV. But Egan Riley for McNally. Could be close run thing though as Thomas is obviously impressing Kompany

Interestingly I haven’t seen much of THB in the training vids? Perhaps he’s carrying a knock as well.
I suspect a similar team to what you have put out but with Barnes in place of Cornet and Thomas at the back instead of McNally.
Potentially Riley instead of THB if he’s got a knock.
Re: Team v Huddersfield
Yes good points, also not seen THB in training vids, hopefully we find out the team v Newc tomorrow but I wouldn’t count on it. Really hope you aren’t right with the Barnes / Jay partnership, was hoping that wouldn’t be seen at all this season - perhaps Twine instead of Barnes if he’s good to go.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 22, 2022 7:25 amI am pretty confident Cornet and McNally won’t start for various reasons.

Yes tbh I am just making the assumption that Twine is injured. I suspect Barnes and Jay partnership will be a last resort. Unless they decide to start Bastien on the right and push Brownhill behind Jay (the twine role).RVclaret wrote: ↑Fri Jul 22, 2022 7:27 amYes good points, also not seen THB in training vids, hopefully we find out the team v Newc tomorrow but I wouldn’t count on it. What I do hope is that the team isn't packed with newbies, if it's we will get trounced
Re: Team v Huddersfield
Worth mentioning only 5 out of Huddersfield's 11 that started at Wembley remain at the club and they also have a new manager, but who's actually never managed a game before.Top Claret wrote: ↑Fri Jul 22, 2022 7:41 amWhat I do hope is that the team isn't packed with newbies, if it's we will get trounced

Re: Team v Huddersfield
Twine isn't injured, there resting him and he's having lighter training sessions because he's finding it to much, the training facilities he's had before was basically a football pitch and gym away from his former club, so for him to be involved with a lower grade of training and still contributing to 33 goals last season is frightening to think what he could achieve once he's fully pre season match fit with us.

Let’s face it. We don’t have the foggiest. Fun to speculate but really the only guarantees for me are Cork and Cullen.

Think he’s a cert at Hudd due to his experience and captaincy. As time progresses I think Brownhill / Bastien will take up that role in CM though.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 22, 2022 7:48 amThat’s interesting as I actually don’t think cork will feature

Fair enough, but I’ll feel a lot more comfortable with them both in front of our inexperienced CB’sNewcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 22, 2022 7:48 amThat’s interesting as I actually don’t think cork will feature

I imagine and would hope that Cork only doesn't feature if he ends up with a knock. Should be a certainty.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 22, 2022 7:48 amThat’s interesting as I actually don’t think cork will feature
Re: Team v Huddersfield
I think Cork is a necessity to start. We need that experience in front of the back 4. Risky game starting 2 new CBs AND 2 new DMs.

Possibly right I just personally think Bastien will start as he seems to fit Kompanys set up really well.
For me Cork and cullen are plying for the same role in the squad. The sitter in front of defence

We’re forgetting Maatsen who I think might play instead of Charlie. Brownhill is a shoe-in to play and the bench will be very interesting.

Brownhill is going to be one of the key players this season. Close to being the first on the team sheet first me.

Brownhill is a shoe in, as is THB
Other than that I couldn't really say with any certainty
The behind closed doors friendly with Newcastle will give us a better idea of the formation and the line up I'd expect

Surely McNeil is first name on the team sheet?
Re: Team v Huddersfield
I didn’t think Brownhill was good enough for the PL. He is a very good Championship player. Think he’ll be a very important player for us this year.
Back on topic
BPF
Roberts THB McNally Taylor
Cullen Cork
Bastien Brownhill
McNeil/Twine/Barnes ( depending on fitness/availability)
JRod
I’d like to see Cornet playing but think it’s too much to hope for.

Re: Team v Huddersfield
If Cornet is fit, he must start imo. 17% of our seasons games are in August. Good start is not imperative but obviously could shape the season - let’s face it, had he been available for a few more games last season, we might be in a different league!
If he’s here, and we’re paying his £60kpw wages (whatever they are), he should play.
He’s the type of guy who will want to be on the pitch and if he bags a load of goals it can’t hurt his valuation (assuming no release clause) or wages from his perspective. Not to mention that not playing him probably damages our negotiation position.

Re: Team v Huddersfield
Personally I can't see him starting in the opening game ahead of Brownhill & Bastien.
Possibly he may start in the 10 role instead of Cornet ?
Re: Team v Huddersfield
The same could be said of Cork or Brownhill!
Re: Team v Huddersfield
Think you are getting the roles mixed up.
The shape is a 4-4-2 in defence and some form of 4-2-2-2 in attack, but with Cullen dropping into the backline and the full backs pushing really high up, forming some sort of fluid 3-3-2-2.
The two 'wide' players then tuck quite narrow in the space between the lines. For me, McNeil is a shoe in for the inside 10 from the right, while I'd expect Brownhill to operate from the left for now, given his 3 assists at Shrewsbury.
The strikers stay high up but will happily drop deep to link play, there isn't a '10' role as you suggest.

Personally Id be amazed and a little disappointed if McNeil is still at the club and isn't played when available.
I'll trust the process though

Huddersfield's star defender last year was Chelsea loanee Levi Colwill, who is also 19 like ER.
