Turnover of players/debuts on Friday

Post by TheFamilyCat » Wed Jul 27, 2022 6:41 pm

Have we ever had a bigger turnover of players in a preseason? What is the highest number of Burnley players making their debut in the same game?

We had a lot of new faces in 1987 but I'm struggling to recall anything like this summer.

Cotterill's first game?
Hyde, Duff, McGreal, Sinclair, Coyne and Tony Grant(?)

Not Tony Grant. We signed him in 2001 and Cotterill arrived in the summer of 2004!

The turnover was huge in 2004 though, with only 8 first team players left over from Stan's time. I think the rebuild this season will prove to be even bigger than back then.

Forgetting about the football was a common theme during the Cotterpin years, such was the post Christmas fare every season.

When you look at those players we really should have done well under Cotterill. They were half decent players he signed.

They were half decent, but they were only ever decent for the first half of a season.

Was thinking Cotterill, too. But on Friday we could realistically be starting seven new players: Muric, THB, either McNally or CJ, Maatsen, Cullen, Bastien and Twine.

Muric
Roberts, CJ/LMcN, THB, Maatsen
Bastien, Cullen
Twine Brownhill
Jay Barnes

Roberts, Brownhill, Jay and Barnes the only to start left over from last season. Taylor might get the nod ahead of Maatsen on experience, but I'd say they're 50/50. Maatsen seems to fit Kompany's system better being a more attack-minded player, and he's a loan from Chelsea, so you'd imagine he is here to play. Bastien might play in the midfield two along Brownhill, with Cork alongside Cullen. We'll see what happens there. There's also the possibility of CJ playing RWB at some point in the season (the lad is so young and can still be moulded into whatever player he or Kompany wants him to be). Massive changes, and we're probably going to bring in another wing-back, another first XI striker, and a few back-up players.

In our first ever game, every player made their debut, that should be pretty difficult to beat :-)

Oh, and Steve Taylor made his 2nd Burnley debut, so that makes nine.

Sorry, it was the next match.
