He’s a good player. A lot of fans couldn’t see that or refused to see it.

Hopefully he has a great season out on loan and we can recoup most of what we paid for him.

I'm with you GFF. Thought he was superb in the first 8 games or so...and decent after that. Close to being an absolute hero. He'd have scored a panful this season. But, it didn't work out. Re: Wout Weghorst Debut at Besiktas
I thought he was a good player, who improved us significantly when we played to his strengths - balls in to his feet. Linked play really well.
He wasn’t the most clinical of finishers. Just looked a split second too slow to get his shots away. I think he’d tear up the Championship on that basis, but not sure our style requires him now. I hope we’ll always want a pacy striker who plays off the shoulder under VK.

Re: Wout Weghorst Debut at Besiktas
a striker playing in last season's team was on a hiding to nothing really. That said he still contributed more direct goals and assists in half a season than some of our forward players playing a full season.

As others have said, I hope he does well so we can recoup a decent fee.

Seriously though , of course he’s a decent pro footballer but the Prem and ourselves were not for him . He’s the slowest I’ve ever seen in modern football and his 1st touch utterly deserted him . Bit of time on the ball he’ll score double figures in Turkey , perhaps .

Re: Wout Weghorst Debut at Besiktas
He was poor in games when we didn’t play to his strengths such as at Brentford. The issue in games such as that one is that if you do play to his strengths he would need to be quicker. He shouldn’t have played that game. He was excellent against Man U and some of his early games for sure. Probably needed an early home goal and may have kicked on. He is certainly a good player in the right system and side.

Re: Wout Weghorst Debut at Besiktas
Some of his performances towards the end stank more than his attitude, which is saying something. A player totally unsuited to English football and a very poor signing. I can't believe for one moment that Dyche would have chosen to sign him.

Given his height advantage, he was the worst header of a ball I've ever seen from a Burnley striker...with the possible exception of David Jones (the one from the eighties).

Re: Wout Weghorst Debut at Besiktas
He obviously has ability but he was so totally unsuited to our style of play it was untrue. Put in some good performances despite what the naysayers will have you think - United, Brighton etc - but yeah, not for us. As technically good as he was, his inability to head a ball was quite something. I reckon he’ll score a hatful in Turkey.

Didn't do well in the air for us, but I don't think it was down to his ability.fidelcastro wrote: ↑Tue Aug 09, 2022 4:39 pmGiven his height advantage, he was the worst header of a ball I've ever seen from a Burnley striker...with the possible exception of David Jones (the one from the eighties).
Can clearly score good goals with his head, for example recently against Wales.
Here's a couple more:
I rated him, I thought we didn't really play to his strengths under Dyche. Ironically now he would have been ideal.
I think those that rated Wood don't rate Weghorst the same as those that rate Hendrick tend not to rate Brownhill.

Re: Wout Weghorst Debut at Besiktas
That’s absolutely the issue. Yes he didn’t win much in the air, but not did wood for his height either. He could link up the play well given his strengths and it’s a shame he went because he would have bagged a hat full in this season and this league.superdimitri wrote: ↑Tue Aug 09, 2022 5:08 pmI rated him, I thought we didn't really play to his strengths under Dyche. Re: Wout Weghorst Debut at Besiktas
So you blame Dyche for not playing to his strengths and you blame Jackson for leaving him out. The simple answer was he was nowhere near good enough. Fingers crossed he never comes back.
As for bagging a hat full this season. Do you honestly think Kompany would have played him?
Re: Wout Weghorst Debut at Besiktas
I reckon he was dropped for the attitude at Watford and publicly kicking off with Jackson. The bottom line is he didn't know how to put the ball in the net. Always chose the wrong option or no option at all until he was dispossessed when in the box. Thought he was a snip after the first few games but that changed quickly. Had he put the ball in the net from a few yards out at Villa we'd probably still be on the Premier league (yes I know there are other moments you could point to but this was in the nitty gritty). I said in the player ratings after five or six games that we've bought a dud and I'd probably stick by that.

Re: Wout Weghorst Debut at Besiktas
The main reason we won at Watford was because he was subbed. From memory he was not happy to be subbed in that game but it was the right call by Jackson.
Sometimes foreign players take a while to adapt to the English game but he seemed to have adapted quite quickly in the earlier games. He then got gradually worse when he was either found out by the opposition, not quick enough, unsuited to the playing style, lost confidence or just wasn’t giving 100%. It was probably a combination of those things but certainly the last one is unforgivable. When you then add in the Roberts rant in the Wales game and his questionable interviews post season it is best he is out of the door.
As others have said he could have ripped this league up potentially but attitude is the most important thing and that stinks tbh. A good player with a bad attitude is worse than a bad player with a good attitude tbh.

I think it is as well some folk on here aren't involved in football. Take the Claret specs off. Yes, he was the wrong fit for our anti football last season. Was he a poor player. He showed enough in a number of games to suggest the opposite.

Mental if you can’t see Weghorst is a good player
Yeah punting channel balls to him and expecting a result is utterly moronic or using him as a head on a stick.
Play to feet and get runners in and around him and he’s very good - absolutely no coincidence that our best performance of last season (3-0 away vs Brighton) we had the best passers of the football in our team and Weghorst up top

Not really, I'm comfortable that you don't rate him, and I do, that's fine by me and its natural to have different opinions. I was just noticing a trend between posters who don't rate him and those that do..there's definitely a link that may have a lot to do with how said posters rated each predecessor. Works both ways I guess, I didn't rate Wood and Hendrick, but I like Weghorst and Brownhill.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Aug 09, 2022 5:40 pmAnd we did with Jackson? Probably so, he finally left him out.
I feel personally he needs attacking players behind him rather than out wide. His strength is bringing others in to play. We just didn't have the players for that back then, and we didn't play a system that really suited that anyway, even with Jackson.

70 goals in 144 league games for Wolfsburg, in a very, very good league, suggest he is a very, very good player. Put him in a proper team and he will score a hatful. He was the Bundesliga's second top scorer in during his time at Wolfsburg, behind Lewandowski. Last season, we'd have made Lewandowski look sh*t.

No pace and not at all clinical with the ball in the attacking third. He may have some qualities, but not a player I want to build a team around.
Re: Wout Weghorst Debut at Besiktas
I want him to do as well as possible as he has a contract with us until 2025. I believe his current loan has an option to buy.
He's got no future at TM and we can't afford to pay his wages whilst sat in the stands.

Re: Wout Weghorst Debut at Besiktas
If I bought a new car and it didn't go I'd say I'd bought a dud. He was bought as a direct replacement for Wood and his main job as a centre forward is to put the ball in the net.Papabendi wrote: ↑Tue Aug 09, 2022 6:10 pmA 'dud' who has International caps + goals for Netherlands? Interesting.

If you want to argue about how good his hold up play was on the rare occasions he got it played to feet then fair enough. I'd agree he had a good touch.
My opinion is mainly based on how poor he was in and around the box with the ball at his feet. Liverpool game springs to mind but there were many other occasions.
Oh and he's not competing against Van Basten, Bergkamp, Kluivert or Van Persie for a place in the Holland squad. I remember Geoff Thomas and Carlton Palmer playing for England in the nineties.

He’s obviously a good player. You don’t have the career he’s had if you’re a bad player. My personal opinion is that we’d have stood a much better chance of staying up had he got games over Barnes at the end of the season but I also now think we are probably better off without him…if that makes sense!

He's clearly very good - was just in a team who did not in any way play to his strengths. When you add to that that we didn't create anything for our strikers, no striker would have looked good for us last year.

Wood was excellent from us; we built the team around his strengths. I found him to be an incredibly limited footballer that corresponded to our lack of creativity.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Aug 09, 2022 6:35 pmWood scored 49 Premier League goals for us and Hendrick was terrific in that role in front of Cork & Defour. Weghorst was a far more technical and intelligent player that needed to be in a different system, and we failed to adapt.
We can already see what happens when Wood is put in a situation where the teams tactics are not tailored for his strengths, he'll probably be back in the championship soon.
