Just trying to get some independent views on life at Edge Hill University, as I have today accepted a place on their Masters course… giving me three weeks before the agreement is set in stone (alternative option being Salford University).

Anyone studied at either care to pass on their experience, please ?

My son was told Edge Hill was an excellent University and after he has been there for the last four years everyone was absolutely spot on.

It is amazing and everyone you speak to will not say a bad word about it. He wanted to go to Loughborough but mainly for Javelin not for the education and location. We talked him round and he now thanks us and says it was 100% the right choice.

I'm unbeaten at edge hill, 3 in 3. Good pitches.

My eldest went to Salford and I have a nephew and niece that went to Edge Hill. None of them had any complaints education wise but the night life would be better in Manchester than Ormskirk.

Used to play Uni football and their facilities were great so loved playing there. Would have hated to go to Uni there as it was too remote for me as a young lad however I guess as an older student the bright lights of the city are not quite as an important requirement when making your choice

My daughter gained a first class with honours in adult nursing last year and loved her time at Edge Hill. Great amenities, accommodation and obviously education!

Yes, I went to the old Salford Tech in the 90’s… but these days as an old fogey it is not a prime consideration. My other half would be less than chuffed if ‘nightlife’ was part of my thinking

Be careful, most masters in the North West in STEM subjects have a majority of international students on the course and by default are taught online.
I would highly recommend you check how much time you are going to spend on campus.
For a masters, make sure the uni has a strong research focus in the area you wish to study,
You normally have 6 weeks from enrolment to quit the course without penalty if you are receiving support from the SFE
I take STEM masters from Salford, UCLAN or Bolton but not Edge Hill.
The only reason to go to Edge Hill is an education or psychology based masters

Thanks Brexit. It’s the fact that it’s emphasis on research that formed part of my decision for Edge Hill over Salford. Another that a neighbour and former Uni lecturer (not mine) looked into each course for me and suggested I would take more from Edge Hill than Salford. The problem I have is both departments came across really well, but Edge Hill offers specialisation in nineteenth century and potentially the opportunity to re-connect with a football historian who taught briefly at Burnley (Uclan) during my degree… with a view to some calibration with him further down the line. Having History and English Lit, it seems the most natural next step of the two courses. I got the impression both departments would be pretty tight and close nit (that is the conundrum) .

My eldest son studied Law and Criminology at Edge Hill between 2012/2015 and it was just at the start of all the new halls of residence being built because he was in the old halls which were old but just adequate.
He rented a house with uni friend's for the 2nd/3rd years, I found the rented property to be basic at best and ate up all his allowance and if Edge Hill are offering halls of residence for the 2nd and 3rd years I would snatch their hand off because can you imagine renting a house with the gas and electric prices at the moment and I think the renting for students has lost its sparkle because of the utility costs.
Enjoy the journey its a very good university and a good choice and will give you memories for life.

It's changed quite a bit in the years since but seems to offer amazing on site accommodation which is offered to all first years students. Second/third years tend to head out into the community and, have wild parties. They also organise coach trips into Liverpool/Manchester so it isn't as quiet as you'd initially think.

Sadly my wild partying days are over. Firmly focused on the path these days and I’ll be travelling in so apart from the odd overnighter when necessary for the research / and functions, I’ll be expected back home. Sure there will be a bed and breakfast I can crash in Ormskirk, when necessary, but thanks for the lowdown.

My daughter loved it but she didn’t live on campus. Stayed at home (not ours, lived with bf now hubby). But she liked it a lot. Went there a few times and it really is a nice uni.

I went to Salford as a mature student, graduating in 2018. Thoroughly enjoyed it, and would definitely recommend. Used to be able to drive from Barnoldswick to the Farmer Norton car park in under an hour if I set off around half six in the morning.

Congrats on accepting a place on the masters course, elwaclaret.

A couple of my colleagues have recently studied at Edge Hill and I've only heard positive things. A friend of mine is just finishing up studying a postgrad course at Salford which has mainly been online, possibly due to covid or maybe it's just the setup of the course. Have you had chance to visit both? I imagine the two universities might have quite a different feel to them given the two locations.

if you are interested in research then pick the University where you know they will like your research and where you can leverage personal relationships.

It may sound cynical but if you are into the humanities - it's who you know more than what you know that matters.

If you are an off-site student and your view is that "both departments would be pretty tight and close nit (that is the conundrum)" then the above is even more true.

Research is not about what is new and innovative - it's about re-enforcing the views of the echo chambers that gatekeep the journals and knowing influential people who can help you establish your career. If research is what you want to do then a little bit of cynicism goes a long way.

First on-campus enrolment meeting this evening, can’t wait to get stuck in now.
