Team v Shrews

Post by tiger76 » Tue Aug 23, 2022 9:24 am

Can't see a thread so here goes. I don't think it's a secret that we will make changes tonight.

BPF
Roberts Egan-Riley THB Taylor
JBG Bastien Cullen Churliinov
Brownhill
Barnes

Should be an ideal game to give some players minutes, plus giving run-outs to a few new boys. Well still having enough to beat Shrewsbury.

It’s unlikely but I’d stick with our first choice for Wigan. Minutes on the pitch at the minute are vital for the understanding

Personally I’d play Muric and get him more game time/familiarity with other defenders that may step in over the course of the season

——————Muric
Vitinho-McNally -CJ-Dodgeson
———Bastien—Brownhill
————JBG—-Costelloe
———-Barnes-Churlinov

Something along those lines

BPF
Egan Riley THB McNally Taylor
Cullen
Benson Bastien JBG
Churlinov
Barnes ( don't think we have any other option as we need to protect Jay purely for the league , but wouldn't have him anywhere near the squad never mind team once we get our No:1 striker )

Muric
Roberts
Vitinho
Cork
Brownhill
Tella
Jay

Need to get some minutes / look for some players, need to rest some others.
Bench strong if needed, but I'd imagine this is as routine away win as it gets, at least 3 goals for us

Won't happen but...

------------------Muric---------------------
Vitinho - Thomas - McNally - Dodgson
----------Egan-Riley - Bastien-----------
-------------------Phillips------------------
--------Benson - Barnes - Churlinov----

BPF
THB
Roberts
Taylor
Cork
Cullen
JBG
Tella
Costelloe (as a striker, rest Jay)

Would have liked some of the U21s on the bench but given the big names all played 90 mins yesterday I'd say that's not on the table.

I expect to see quite a few new faces playing, whether in defense, midfield or attack, I would rest Muric, Roberts, Taylor, Cork, Jay & Barnes as a minimum, perhaps even THB, but probably a bit to far in a wholesale change. Although I could see Taylor moving to LB for this, as I expect he'll be there for the next few league games, this will help as I think he'll be replaced by someone as the third CD on the left, playing close to him.

I'm hoping, particularly in attack, we play different/new faces, or they are not ready for squad places yet. I'd really like to see how Egan-Riley and McNally can play, certainly expect Churlinov somewhere upfront, wouldn't be surprised to see Tella given another outing for at least 60 min's.

Strong bench though, just in case things don't work out as envisioned.

BPF
Vitinho Egan-Riley McNally Taylor
Cullen Bastien
Benson Tella Costelloe
Churlinov

VK seems to have decided on his 4-2-3-1 formation (for the foreseeable future) so the squad players will need to fit into that

I’d be tempted to try Churlinov at centre forward.

Muric
Lowton
Egan-Riley
McNally
Dodgson
Cullen
Bastien
Benson
JBG
Churlinov
Barnes

4-2-3-1 with JBG playing the ‘Brownhill’ role

Cullen subbed at around 55 minutes for Brownhill / Cork

I'd play Taylor at left back, needs to get his eye back in for the next 2 league games.

Lowton Egan McNally Taylor

I’d play Muric if we are trying to maintain/train the system out amongst the squad, otherwise plenty of changes:

——————————Muric
Lowton Egan-Riley McNally Dodgson
JBG ———Bastien Cullen ——Benson
—————————Churlinov
——————————-Barnes

that's what I would start with other than I'd play Benson instead of Richardson (on the assumption Costelloe can play up top)

edit - i'd also play Muric

How many subs allowed? If 5 then room for game time for lots of occasional. Be good to get a look at some youngsters during the game.

BPF, Lowton, Long (?), Benson, Churlinov, Tella, McNally, JBG, Costelloe, Vitinho need to start IMO.

Up front I'd also be tempted to start with Barnes and spare JayRod. Maybe even Richardson?

Cup is not so important if you ask me

I take your point about the cup not being top of our priority list, however if we were to crash out tonight, that would make it 5 without a win, and the narrative would start to build over whether Kompany can hack it in England.

Whereas a convincing victory tonight, and then we'll be heading to Wigan in good spirits, so for me it is an important game in terms of morale if nothing else, the lads just need to get the feel of winning games, no matter who the opposition are.

That's the team I'd go with - also hoping JBG gets an extended run out from the bench. Is there any more news on Twine?

Muric/BPF (Depends if you want to focus on rotation or experience at the system,I'd probably go latter and Muric)
Vitinho Egan-Riley McNally Dodgson
Bastien Brownhill
Benson Churlinov JBG
Costelloe

Costelloe deserves the start in his proper role,JBG could be very useful if he can get some games and form going, want to see what Churlinov can do and give Bastien, Vitinho and Benson a chance to get some confidence going/youngsters some experience.

Never had a problem with rotating teams for the cup and Shrewsbury is an ideal game for it.

It’s all about learning who’s dropping in where depending on the opposition’s press

The keeper plays a vital role in how we attack now - hence opting for Muric to get more game time and familiarity with rotation players

I think he'll put out a strong team. We need a win right now.

Muric,
Egan-Riley, Harwood-Bellis, McNally, Taylor,
Vitinho, Cullen, Brownhill, Bastien,
Churlinov, Tella

Exactly how I said it to friends on Saturday before the Blackpool game. I said it was a must win, especially at home, not because it will help for promotion etc, just to helps the team keep the morale high and to boost Kompany and the coaching staff that we're on the right path.

We know there are going to be slip ups, as we have seen already, with a brand new team and manager/coaching staff but you still need them wins to pop up to keep confidence high.

Kevin Long has played 8 games in 6 seasons in the EFL cup guess he won't be adding to his total tonight.
