England-SA 3rd test

Post by tiger76 » Thu Sep 08, 2022 12:12 pm

Start delayed by rain, England won toss, and will bat when or if they get going today, which judging by the weather reports is looking highly doubtful I'm afraid.

Harry Brook making his debut in place of Bairstow is England's only change,

Still no prospect of play, and I fear we won't see any action today.

Think England bowl when play starts
Further pitch inspection at 3-10

As and when they get under way, England will be bowling, as you say DAVE.

Play scheduled to resume today, which will still by day 3 as they can't extend until Tuesday.

Hopefully TMS will have their regular coverage, so at least we can enjoy some sport this weekend, although I guess it'll be a sombre atmosphere at the Oval.

Completely pointless starting a test on day 3, waste of time

Not the way these 2 sides bat.

Call me a cynic, but the ECB won't think it's a waste of time if they're collecting gate receipts will they.

Didn’t the last two tests finish in 3 days? I’d imagine they will play 1 day cricket and it will be exciting, providing it doesn’t rain

Weather's set fair in London that I can see, and it is the last test of the summer, plus it's winner takes all, so every chance of both sides going for it hopefully. and I assume they'll try and make up as much lost time as they feasibly can over the 3 remaining days, so I wouldn't totally rule out a positive result either way, especially with the strength of the 2 bowling attacks, and the fact early September in England tends to lead to bundles of wickets.

Are there extended sessions, with up to 98 overs a day? That's a lot of play left especially the way we bat. Both teams going for the win, could be a very interesting 3 days ahead...

I believe that's the case yes, though whether they'll get all 98 overs in given the abysmal over rates this summer I'll have my doubts, depends how much either side wants to push the game along I suppose.

7/2 exactly what this game needed, a big test for South Africa's inexperienced middle order now.

21/3 2nd wicket for Robinson, but why the batsmen left it beats me.

Robinson with 4 to his name now, and he's causing chaos. England might be batting before lunch if this carries on.

69-6 at lunch, so a slight recovery by the tourists, but easily England's session.

Actually England don't have to go gung ho now, there's nearly 60 overs left of today alone, so even scoring at slightly over 3 an over England will reach 200 or so by the close, but given the way England do bat if they are still batting at the close the lead will likely be larger than that.

Of course we do need to keep wickets intact, Lees gone for 13, 17-1.

Short rain delay 107-3, Pope nearing 50, and Brook starting brightly on debut.

The crowd growing impatient, and TBH I don't blame them.

Silly innings from Stokes, he didn't need to try and whack every ball. The lead is only 11 and there is plenty of time left. Broad is is in next, Stokes needed to stay around for a while and build a lead. Even the commentators are using words like "bizarre" and "unusual" to describe his innings, Pope just gone as well.

He talks about this new style of aggressive cricket, but he’s the only one that’s looked really reckless when doing it, his own cricket is aggressive anyway so there’s no need to try and hit every ball

Being positive is great, but there's a thin line between positivity and recklessness, especially given the tense situation of the match.

Going off for bad light - doesn't even look bad. You'd think the umpires would do everything to get as many overs in as possible after the first 2 days being called off...

The old adage ‘don’t judge a pitch till both teams have batted on it’ springs to mind.
