Benson

Post by Vegas Claret » Sun Sep 18, 2022 6:46 pm

from an article by Andy Jones in the Athletic

"During training sessions, Kompany has been instructing his full-backs to be aggressive against Benson in small-sided games and possession drills. Kompany has tried to pick Burnley’s most aggressive full-back to mark him to help simulate match-like situations."

love it

Benson was unplayable the first 15-20 mins, then he got kicked and struggled from there on in. There did seem some bizarre reluctance to pass to him though towards the back end of the first half. He is going to be one of those players who either has a stormer, or is rubbish but at least he tries to be positive and run at players. It’s natural that it won’t come off every time.

Benson has contributed really well from the Millwall game onwards and is looking another good signing.

I’ve been brought up to kick players like Benson, and I’ll be honest, I still do it now at 6aside when I’m playing a young side, even though we laugh about bullying in the WhatsApp group after.

I’ll not change, I also don’t care, it’s all part of the game, those that moan have never really played, hence why his team mates don’t moan

He's a flair player who gets taken out of games by some rough treatment. If he can grow past that he will be a lot more consistent.

Electric yesterday. Already won us points against Luton and Millwall. Still getting up to speed with the league but looks an excellent signing signing so far. Refreshing to see us have a winger not afraid to turn and be so direct. That Tella sitter came from his excellent wing play.

Or if referees do their job properly and book somone early.

The first time Manuel got a serious whack it seemed to knock the stuffing out of him and he practically disappeared from the game and I thought at the time that he was a lightweight.
However, with each passing game he seems to be 'toughening' up and to be fair, that tackle in the first half yesterday was a bit naughty and I thought he did well to continue.
I would guess he is going to be a target for 'roughing up' in most games but he seems to be adapting with every game, and long may that continue.
An exciting player who will have us on the edge of our seats, sometimes frustrating us but what the heck.
He most definitely gets a ✔️ from Mick.

Agreed, I think he has been literally kicked out of games with no protection from officials.

I remember Ronaldo having to go through the same stuff when he first arrived at Utd.
Pretty sure it was a Sunderland game and he was kicked all over.

He’s unpredictable and has great ball control. It’s refreshing to see one of our wingers not doing the same thing. He can beat a man and he doesn’t have to swap feet.

His first half against Bristol was outstanding. He needs more time to adapt better to the Championship, then he will be an excellent addition to our squad.

I stopped playing the local 5 a side league because of this attitude/approach from a number of teams. We all have to be fit to work tomorrow to earn a crust and then some wannabe Chopper Harris is going through folk with no regard for the possible consequences.

You have been brought up to cheat, foul and maim.

You have my pity, but you need to reconsider your options as a member of normal society.

Kids football as well

Some teams have players who take advantage of the refs not really being that keen on carding players to make some dreadful challenges

Good stuff by VK, but I'd like him to instruct Benson to wear decent shin pads.

I didn't like shin pads either when I was young, but ultimately I bought a pair which protected both sides of my legs and ankles and learnt to play with them. Had to buy a new pair each season, but they certainly avoided serious injuries.

They sell very light and strong shin pads nowadays, and there's really no excuse for a professional player not wearing decent ones.

Also, I find the Grealish-type look appalling :o ;)

Benson highlights from Saturday:

https://mobile.twitter.com/freflchampvi ... 8564035585

Worth a watch. Could easily have had a goal and 2x assists. Thhe back heel and nearly chip to Jay were exquisite and worth the entrance fee!

If you're kicking a random bloke in an amateur basic 6 a side pick up game then you're a complete and utter whopper.

If you did that against me or lads that I know you'd get filled in, instantly

It was a joke man, as if I go around kicking folk, I’m about 5ft 😂
It’s what you hear as the reason for doing it by those that do though
