Would've said Defour or Ings, but already suggested so I'll go Paul Fletcher.

Brian O'Neil for me too, the complete midfielder.ClaretLoup wrote: ↑Wed Sep 21, 2022 9:07 pmBrian O’Neil.
What a Burnley fan would be like if they could play for the club.

Re: if you could have one player back from the past
Aye.....one of his most memorable performances. He masterminded that win with one arm behind his back. Pretty sure Bobby Robson scored in the first half to put West Brom in front, then Mac took over and we scored twice to win the game.
Re: if you could have one player back from the past
It was Sir Bobby that put WBA in front when we were down to 10 men and then He came back on heavily strapped and I think made both goals we scored.
Sorry got the Royboy wrong-couldnt recall that user name but memories of that fantastic season whilst a tad faded are still there.
I think WBA left back was a bit too soft on Jimmy- I think Preston's Cunningham would have move to the left and done Macs other shoulder

Ironically Mac missed the very next game, away at Preston !mdd2 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 21, 2022 10:34 pmIt was Sir Bobby that put WBA in front when we were down to 10 men and then He came back on heavily strapped and I think made both goals we scored.

Willie Irvine. End thread, he’d get a hat-trick every game at this level.

Re: if you could have one player back from the past
Good choices already mentioned and from a footballing viewpoint I can't argue with the likes of Jimmy Mac, Danny Inngs or Trips. Brian O'Neil would be good but he'd rarely be available these days - red cards most games and yellows for the others; in fact he'd probably get a yellow just watching
However, with the chances created by this side, I'd go for an out an out goalscorer, perhaps Willie Irvine, in his prime, but probably Andy Payton - 'cos I saw him play more often.

Given we're in the second tier: Glen Little. He'd be perfect in this set-up.

Re: if you could have one player back from the past
Trippier would be outstanding in this setup.
My second choice is the Jay Rod who left to go to Southampton.
Danny Ings was fantastic for us but we already have similar players to him, not on the same level but I feel Trippier would be the biggest improvement.

Ings is the obvious choice but I would never turn down the magic a prime Robbie Blake would bring to the team.

Re: if you could have one player back from the past
Trevor Steven or an uninjured Kevin Reeves
Re: if you could have one player back from the past
Pope with Muric’s passing ability.
Re: if you could have one player back from the past
It would have to be in the context of what the team needs the most at the moment. We definitely don’t need any more wingers, so players like Little or Mcilroy aren’t the answer. In my view it would have to be a goal scorer or midfield enforcer. From that point of view the two obvious answers are Andy Payton and Brian O’Neal. If I had to choose one it would be O’Neal all day long.

Re: if you could have one player back from the past
Been an interesting thread....could certainly make a decent side from some of the former players' names suggested.
On the subject of "players from the past", below is a list of the names of six 'elite' former footballers, all of them with one thing in common......Any ideas?
Sir Tom Finney CBE, Preston,
Jack Charlton OBE, Leeds Utd,
Albert Cheesebrough, Leicester, ( Yes, our former player),
Sir Jimmy Hill OBE, Fulham,
Jimmy Greaves MBE, Chelsea,
Sir Bobby Robson, West Brom.

Re: if you could have one player back from the past
I don’t think you ever saw Jimmy Mac. He wasn’t a winger but an inside forward. That was an old fashioned label given to midfielders. Jimmy was the greatest player we ever had and with his intelligence would have adapted to the modern game brilliantly. If you had seen him play you would not have thought that he was a winger - but if he had played on the wing he would have been far better than any other winger in the modern game.

What makes them elite, I'm struggling to think.
I can only say those clubs and those players in particular would've played against the Clarets in our Championship winning season 1959/60.

Just to add that all six players also scored against us during that Title winning '59/'60 season. Even Albert Cheesy.

I kinda thought I may have been on the right track and that they had all probably scored. (I knew Jimmy Greaves and Jimmy Hill had done). Initially, I was looking for something more than just that.Royboyclaret wrote: ↑Fri Sep 23, 2022 6:46 pmYou virtually got there, claretfern.

Martin Dobson. And I’m not bothered whether he fits into a particular formation. Would just love to see him in claret and blue again.
